India begins work on 2nd nuclear submarine | The Asian Age

India has begun construction of its second nuclear submarine at a classified facility in Visakhapatnam.
Top sources told Deccan Chronicle that the keel of the project has been laid and the initial work is on full swing.
The project, launched just 24 months after the first nuclear submarine INS Arihant was commissioned - underlines the great strides the programme has made, sources said.

"The second programme took far lesser time than Arihant to reach the shipyard from the drawing board. This time we had a clear plan and we had learned a lot from our mistakes," sources said.

Though exact details of the project's progress are not available, it is learnt that fabrication of the hull and body has begun. The reactor has been fabricated with the help of Russia.

The electronics and other systems are all indigenous. "Our DRDO laboratories have come up with inventions that are world class. We don't have to depend on anyone for sonars and such systems," sources said.

The project is expected to be ready for sea trials by 2015. By that time India would have the Russian submarine on lease and INS Arihant deployed.

Sources, however, felt that the focus must also shift to surface vessels that need to be part of the flotilla that normally accompanies an Air Defence Ship.

New Delhi. INS Arihant India after the completion of its second nuclear submarine in the advanced stage and is expected to launch next year too. Informed sources said the name of the country's second nuclear submarine 'INS Aridmn "and its predecessor will Arihant submarine's twin. Its features, size and capabilities are the same as Arihant. India's second submarine shipyard at Visakhapatnam recently disclosed because of the accident was an accident. The crash killed four Navy personnel. मीडिया के एक वर्ग में जब इस आशय की गलत खबरें प्रकाशित हो गईं कि इस हादसे से आईएनएस अरिहंत के समुद्री परीक्षण प्रभावित होंगे तो इसका खंडन करने के लिए कुछ अधिकारियों ने पुरजोर कहा कि जिस समय यह हादसा हुआ उस समय आईएनएस अरिहंत डाकयार्ड में थी ही No.

These officials undoubtedly believed that the accident at the Dockyard, Advanced Technologies vessel (it is the nuclear submarine project, codenamed) are formed at the time of the crash instead of Arihant there was no other vessel.
From other sources later confirmed that the INS was moved to the Arihant the sea trials and the other vessel is being talked about is the fact India's second nuclear submarine. Arihant INS launched 26 July, 2008 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur did. Traditionally, the Navy launched its ships from the setting up of a woman's offer.
Sources said the incident took place when the dock was being used to test a gate in the water. Kason name the French gate system was first being set up there are three grooves. After two slots to land there was the third slot. Forty feet high and five - six feet Chaudeh naval officers and personnel of the giant gate were anchored. Ldkda when the gate and they fell into dry dock. At the same time the sea water had to be dropped at the dock and got a double shot at the victims of this tragedy.
Sources stressed that the incident and the INS Arihant or vessel will not affect the construction or project.
It says 2nd arihant is in advanced stage of construction and has the same displacement as 1st one. I hope its not true. 6000 tonnes is too small for SSBN, even akula is bigger. Since we have plans to build SSN based on arihant we have to start a separate line of construction for SSN and should increase teh size of SSBN to more than 10000 tonnes.

Well, triad is not built in a day - we will have to evolve bigger and better designs for more strike-capable n-subs.

Meanwhile, what was that line about the needs of an Air Defense ship? Are they talking about building a carrier?

Its talking about importance should also be given to frigates and destroyers which accompanies AC carrier

its very important to start manufacture some thing indigneously than buying and drdo-navy is doing good job in n-submarine.
Even if the start is by small vessels, but atleast that is indigineous.
This it self is a big step and we will on get banefited with it.
So good going.

Arihant isn't a SSBN. It is a SSGN which can fire the Shaurya submarine variant. Only future variants that can carry the K-4 will be SSBNs.

Will there be any difference in displacement between Arihant & Aridaman?

Sea trial in 2015 for the 2nd Sub is too long. Were'nt there reports earlier that there were a total of three Arihant class subs being built?
Going by the pace of work ion this article by 2020 we may only have 3 Arihant class by 2020. And bigger SSBNs might be a distant dream post 2020.

Btw does anyone know where the reactor for the sub is being built? Is it at BARC or at Kalpakkam?

the reactor of arihant class subs is too small and underpowered. it is just 85 me whereas smaller then this subs have reactors of 190 mw capacity. it also has far lesser speed which makes it susceptible to counterstrike if its used in attack mode and cant even chase the frigates of others in defensive mode.

For a nation with zero experience building nuclear subs, it is a bit presumptuous to start construction on a second when the first hasn't started sea trials.

85MWe is plenty. Most submarines of this class has a 85MWe rating. The thermal rating for this reactor is 190MWt, the same as most subs of this class.

Watt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For example, the Embalse nuclear power plant in Argentina uses a fission reactor to generate 2109 MWt of heat, which creates steam to drive a turbine, which generates 648 MWe of electricity. The difference is due to the inefficiency of steam-turbine generators and the limitations of the theoretical Carnot Cycle.

I remember reading once that Arihant would be just as fast, or even faster than comparable submarines of similar type.
