Beheaded jawans cremated in a hurry

Militants didn't mutilate, says Army; doesn't let families see bodies

Two badly mutilated bodies of soldiers have raised passion in the rank and file of the Army against heavily-armed infiltrators who have increased frequency of attempts to sneak into the Kashmir valley to perpetuate acts of violence.

The Army says that the bodies were mutilated in a fierce gunfight in Farkian Gali sector of Kupwara on July 30. But some reports claim that the infiltrators caught hold of the soldiers of the Kumaon Regiment, beheaded them and took away their heads as war trophies before badly mutilating the bodies. The infiltrator group hasn't been identified so far, sources maintained.

The family members of Hawaldar Jaipal Singh Adhikari and Lance Naik Devender Singh, whose headless bodies were sent to their native places, were not allowed to see the mutilated bodies.

Though Jaipal Singh Adhikari's family members were inconsolable when his completely wrapped body was brought here by the Army, none knew that there was more to the version handed out to them — that Adhikari was killed in a grenade blast.

With the information of militants having beheaded two Army jawans in Kupwara region, where Adhikari was posted, trickling in, questions are being asked if Adhikari was one of them. Thirty six-year-old Adhikari was a native of Asgola village, Dwarahat in Almora. He joined the Army in 1994. Jaipal's family including his wife Beena and two children had recently shifted to Himmatpur, Talla, Haldwani. He was about to join his family in August.

Pushpesh Tripathi, MLA from Dwarahat, who was present during the cremation, told The Pioneer that the 'body' which was brought in the casket did not even have limbs.

"Army authorities told the martyr's father about the unfortunate death and took his permission for token cremation, which was done with full State honours," said Tripathi.

The defence spokesman claimed that four infiltrators were also shot down while they tried to escape into Pakistan, their bodies were spotted on the other side of LoC but they could not be retrieved by the Army.

"The entire group of infiltrators has been pushed back and their bid foiled," the spokesman claimed. However, sources said the infiltrators had enough time to catch hold of the soldiers and mutilate their bodies.

Defence spokesman Lt Col Jagmohan Singh Brar conceded that the bodies were badly mutilated but denied the claim that they were beheaded and heads taken away as war trophies by the militants.

"There was a fierce gun-battle at the LoC in which two soldiers died on the spot while another critically injured soldier, who was evacuated to 92 Base Hospital, succumbed later," he said. "When a soldier receives a full burst of fire from an automatic weapon, everyone knows what happens to the body," he said, explaining the gory state of the bodies.

Brar said that the frequency of infiltration bids had increased during past two weeks as infiltrators were making efforts to enter the Valley before the onset of winter season. Defence sources said July and August are the choicest months for infiltrators to redouble their efforts to infiltrate as the mountain passes have least or zero accumulation of snow.

Army says that it is fully geared up to face the challenge of infiltration. Earlier this week, Army Chief Gen VK Singh along-with Northern Commander Lt Gen Parnaik and Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Syed Atta Hasnain visited forward posts to check preparedness to block the ingress of heavily-armed militants.

Sources said the Army has launched a massive combing operation along the Line of Control in the twin border districts of Kupwara and Baramulla following reports of fresh infiltration bids by militants in smaller groups. Sources said around 50 infiltrators sneaked in during past two weeks and the Army is trying to engage and eliminate them in areas closer to the LoC.

The latest two infiltration bids were made on August 5 but the Army foiled them at the cost of death of a jawan in Kupwara. During the two weeks, amid enhanced frequency of infiltration attempts, four infiltrators and five soldiers including a junior officer were killed.

Relatives and other locals joined the Adhikari family in mourning the death of the Uttarakhand native as did military personnel, representatives from the local administrative and social activists.

Bruised martyrdom

Some reports claim that infiltrators caught hold of two soldiers of the Kumaon Regiment, beheaded them and took away their heads as war trophies before badly mutilating the bodies.

Defence spokesman claims that four infiltrators were also shot down while they tried to escape into Pakistan; their bodies were spotted on the other side of the LoC but they could not be retrieved by the Army.

Dwarahat MLA Pushpesh Tripathi, who was present during the cremation, told The Pioneer that the 'body' which was brought in the casket did not even have limbs.

How come I never hear of Israeli or American soldiers being treated like this and those governments sitting idle and suppressing the facts? No country in the world is as soft on its enemies as India is.......absolutely shameful.

Because there soldiers are considered to be humans, not expendable commodities to be bargained for political gains. Btw, nice message the government is sending to people who are considering joining the army.

"It's great you are ready to die for the country, but don't expect us to respect you even in your martyrdom, you would die in anonymity if it means us getting a few brownie points for showing restraint against a psychopathic foe who is existent because of our screwed up policies in the first place"

I believe that This incident though shocking and sad will ultimately prove beneficial to the Army in this daily conflict in Kashmir

Why I say so is because in the recent few months we have been hearing 3 things that is

1. " Infiltration is at an all time low " 2. internally too Kashmir is peaceful .Tourists are back
3. Ceasefire is by and large being followed

So now this act of the Pakistanis ;will Galvanise the army and make revenge as the army's principal aim .

And revenge not only in Kupwara sector but along the entire LOC

They have shocked us now it is our turn to AWE them with our strength and capabilities

Well there have been many cases of barbaric murders of american soldiers stationed in Iraq & Afganistan by extremists taking revenge of Guantanamo.

Bold Part: Agreed, we are a soft state of softer people.

Lets not bite the Army. We know its hands are tied back in the democratic constraints. This isn't a dictatorship and theocracy after all and we are a soft state (I'm not for or against it) which everyone knows. If you want to spit on someone please use the face of political leadership. Army is capable and willing any day you want it to be. Important is, are the representatives chosen by us willing to let them have a hand or two with the bigots on the western border?
I'm sure our forces (at grass root level) would take their revenge although it may not make news for obvious reasons. Much like what the Seals would do sometime soon.

Virendra

Well, stupid comments don't seem to cease on this thread ! Here's another wise guy sizing up the expectations of the great "Indian people" ! The same bunch who elect the Gandhis and MM Singh to loot this country are lecturing on guts, pride and expectations ! My country and my countrymen never cease to amaze me !

Dude, do you think the IA is gonna tell you everything about what they do and they don't to extract redemption for such incidents from across the border ? It was a firefight during an infiltration attempt and not the initial story about terrorists/Pak commandos breaching security and infiltrating a camp and butchering soldiers. You can think whatever you want, the IA doesn't give a damn about whiners, they will take appropriate and necessary response in their own way !

Misplaced shame...intentionally or unintentionally!! Indian armed forces are subservient to the indian govt. Its the Govt's attitude that you find impotent.

So, the actual sentiment of Indian people could be: Indian people are ashamed of the present ruling regime due to the impotency shown by them.

The greater public opinion overall in the country is not as strong and straight forward as few of us we have in this forum.
Our people see Army as a protector and not as a body which gets its hands dirty occasionally (for whatsoever the reason) .. a big no !! They just want inflation controlled, development provided and protection be there. They don't seem to appreciate the requirement of Army's sometimes ruthless role to fight the maniacs hell bent on killing us. T some extent I understand it, we are common people and don't understand everything in the dirty dangerous geopolitical wars even if survivals are at stake. That is why we chose a government so that it'll do the laundry and gets rid of the dirt.
Add to it the pathetic Government which hasn't helped the Armed forces in their plight of operational constraints and deficiencies. That is of course putting aside their unbecoming attitude towards the challenge of fighting Pak terror tooth and nails.
If every second voter is as vocal and critical as we are at this forum, changes are bound to happen at the state level too. But we haven't done that yet. We in our colony don't ask our MLAs and MPs to visit us on a regular basis so we could discuss issues. They just come at our door steps waving hands during elections and we simply smile and do a namaste waiting for their band baja to leave us asap in peace. We never ask them - "Ok. So here's the price on my vote, what are you going to do about xyz ..... " So they take this entire exercise of democracy for granted like a formality. And when they weren't serious while getting chosen, why would they be after getting chosen ???

Virendra

That is not good arya. Self defense is not a reactive prospect. It has to be done very proactively.
We need Anna type movements on national security as well. At least a hot vivid national debate to begin with.
Where we look with focus, our politicians are bound to look at eventually.
