Around 2 decades ago Mid Day a daily published in Mumbai used to run a tiny column of about 3-4 lines at the bottom of the inner pages of their daily edition which listed the number of deaths occuring on railway lines running in Mumbai & the suburbs immediately outside Mumbai connected to it by the suburban railway network , with the number of deaths occuring on that particular day as well as the total such deaths which occurred up until that point in time.

Most of these deaths were listed under the accidental death category including suicides , being run over by the train while crossing the tracks , falling from the train due to over crowding , etc

Some two decades ago it used to report figures of some 3000 deaths per annum. Subsequently they discontinued this practice of publishing those figures. You can only imagine what it's like today.

The annual figures are public even now. Of course, not all of them are attributable to falling off trains (majority aren't) but you will get the gist.

They were always publicly available once the RTI was passed. That wasn't the issue rather it is a compilation of those numbers & publishing them in mainstream media where more people get to see it or in other words generate talking points , which is the real issue.
It is on media though.

Today in News, Chennai - Trivandrum Express, some druggies get into the Reserved compartments and created nuisance. One passenger asked the guys to shut up and get out only to got hit by one durggie and finally ended in Clash.

Apart from overcrowding, looks like drug addicts are getting inside the reserved compartments. Looks like Railways deliberately wants to make the Train journey as unsafe as possible.

When did Ashwini vaishnaw start to bring some sense into Railways. We don't want to cry after some women passenger got violated by criminals since there is no ticket checking and control over who wants to enter an freaking Stations.

This is really becoming a nuisance. Waitlisted Tickets should not be given anymore. I don't think people can be fined in mass as it will create a negative perception of ruling government.

Holy Cow. It is an ICF coach. Chances are low for folks present in the Mangled Compartments.

Babus are hell bent to screw every operation with respect to train. Clear incompetence in managing Goods Trains and Express trains.

Stop trying to sidestep the issue. Your data conveniently stops before the large increase in derailments and collisions. The last 12 months has erased a large amount of decline. Railways has also frozen hiring and seem to be overworking existing loco pilots. There has been some very near misses that could have led to catastrophic deaths in the last few months alone with slightly more bad luck. Reels minister is losing marbles, and has done nothing to improve signaling either to receive any credits either. I don't expect him to be superman, but I do expect him to continue the trend of accident decline, not reverse the trend.

better stick to singapore type countries where parliament discusses topics that are discussed in resident welfare associations here in India. India watching is not for you.

I would not be complaining as much if railways was not this lethargic to implement kavach. There has been almost 0 urgency at all on such a crucial piece of technology

Looks like babooze foreshadowed this accident yesterday and announced "plans" to expand the network to 10k km. No deadlines as usual, but i hope this accident gives them another much needed jolt to roll this out.

like i said, India watching is not for you. India cannot meet your expectations even twenty years from now.
find another country that is more suited for your tastes.

There must be some kind of accountability,No?
Not on railway minister but on babus. The same accidents keeps happening and rail minister is giving free pass to babus for god knows for what reason.
for investigating rail related accident the committe is formed from within railway and usually a supervisor is made scapegoat .I think a independent agency need to formed.

ofcourse there should be accountability, and there will be accountability. how effective depends on the zone.
each zone manages a medium country sized railway network on their own.

I know usually committee is formed and accountability is set , usually at max. it is only supervisor who gets blamed and charge sheeted and subsequently suspended for short time but accidents keeps happening ,doesn’t that mean core issue is not being addressed.
