And such private initiatives will get a big boost with India's extremely cost effective missions. When India is able to get things done at 1/10th the cost, it suddenly makes the whole private Mars initiatives that much more feasible.

First of all who blames my country, please return all the stolen things includes Kohinoor Diamond then talk. i think the amount which are receiving from britian to india not enough if we calculate as rent for all the precious thing that Britain stolen from us.

indian population is 125billion so there will be some poor people.why all of you guys are forgetting about the history. The colonial british people stolen more than 1lakh millions worth gold, diamonds, treasures from india biggest eg is diamonds from taj mahal, kohinoor etc and ruled over >300 yrs still you are acusing they dont deserve it.In every country poor people are there but in india it is more evident because it is 2nd most populated country. And the comments made by some people clearly underlines their fear about the emergence of India to world elite. Most of the comments are criticizing the deserved aid to india..then just look at howmuch uk is spending for the military activities in Afghanistan and Iraq it is far more than the aid to India..india is buying weapons just to protect the people and not to take the innocent lives of the people they are far from your country border.Think wide before the spontaneous burst of emotions and comment...

As an American woman, living in London, I have to say welcome to the space race India. So far, all the achievements have been by the Americans (and some Russians) but as our future lies beyond our planet, we need all the help we can get. As for the country taking British aid...well you kind of took an awful lot from them a few decades ago.

hats off to ameericans

Re: Why ISRO's Mars mission, launching next week, is the cheapest

It is always good to co-operate building on each other's strengths. Some will develop new methods which others manipulate those methods to bring cost effectiveness and drive the advantages to the masses. As for China, I would be surprised if China doesn't claim mars saying that mars belongs to China as mars is called "Red" Planet :pound:
hahahahahah

but regarding cooperation with them

no way ! ...... others are fine .

Chinese Newspaper on ISRO Mars mission

Indian mission to Mars blasts off

India's first mission to Mars blasted off successfully yesterday, completing the first stage of an 11-month journey that could see New Delhi's low-cost programme win Asia's race to the red planet.

A 350-tonne rocket carrying an unmanned probe soared into a slightly overcast sky on schedule at 2.38pm local time, monitored by dozens of tense-looking scientists at the southern spaceport of Sriharikota.

After 44 minutes, applause broke out around the control room when navigation ships in the South Pacific reported that the spacecraft had successfully entered orbit around earth.

Indian Space Research Organisation chairman K. Radhakrishnan allowed himself a smile, slapped a colleague on the back and announced he was "extremely happy" that the first objective had been reached.

At the end of the month, once enough velocity has been built up by the spacecraft as it circles our planet, "the great, long, difficult voyage will start" to Mars, he said.

"In September 2014, we expect this spacecraft to be around Mars and the challenge then is to precisely reduce the velocity and get it into an orbit," he explained in comments broadcast by state television.

The country has never before attempted interplanetary travel, and more than half of all missions to Mars have ended in failure, including China's in 2011 and Japan's in 2003.

The Mars Orbiter Mission, known as "Mangalyaan" in India, was revealed only 15 months ago by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, shortly after China's attempt flopped when it failed to leave earth's atmosphere.

The timing and place of the announcement - in an Independence Day speech - led to speculation that India was seeking to make a point to its militarily and economically superior neighbour, despite denials from ISRO.

The gold-coloured probe, the size of a small car, will aim to detect methane in the Martian atmosphere, which could provide evidence of some sort of primitive life form on Mars.

President Pranab Mukherjee congratulated ISRO and called yesterday's launch "a significant milestone". The cost of the project is estimated at 4.5 billion rupees (HK$562 million).

in terms of long term strategic development

btw anyone knows is there is a camera on the now orbiting craft sending back pictures of the earth ?

^^ I say, to be fair to the Chinese, they aren't really "butthurt". Even this article does not show signs of "butthurt".

That honour goes to the Bri-turds. The most butthurt nation of the 21st century - Bri-turdistan.

Never felt this way before but reading and seeing a lot of items with reference to india being a poor country. people really like to complain about isro and that india is a land of poor.

Isro is a congregation of scientists with highly regarded skills and training that have been put together with common purpose and objectives from the same demographics that people point out is predominantly poor.

Having such a congregation in india allows the poor to know they can through hard work archive anything in this wonderful nation. Having such a congregation allows people to focus on education and educating the youth to join such institutions. In fact I add other institutions like ias, ifs, even raw to this.

The past and current great leaders and luminaries of the isro and their backgrounds before joining isro was defiantly not of (only) affluence. The isro recognises people with skills and knowledge. Isro wants people to do well irrespective of their background. Look at the pride in people when they hear the names of the scientists that were permitted to speak by the isro chairman and each one said "I would like to congratulate the team". - brilliant.

India having poor is much more different topic and unrelated to isro. India has enough scams, corruption and ineffective policies that can feed them and change their lives. Some say it's better to keep people poor because it's easier to administer them. Some say we need more people like those in isro to be in politics.

But that takes away from the point and the Mars mission and that is - Through hard work and dedication anyone can achieve their dreams be it poor be it rich. And the [x] million of poor in india I know what they were thinking today if and when they saw those beautiful flames light up the pslv c25 ... Aim high anything is possible in our great nation that archived this on its own.

ISRO Job well done. Congratulations. Next bang that GSLV in shape the nation is with you.

Yes and apart from this, a lot of additional tangible reasons have been provided in this very thread. I have a serious loathing for Bri-turds who crawl out of their wormholes and vomit all over the WWW whenever India does anything big.

Speaking Abstractly -
[expletive] There are like 500 million poor and impecunious people in India and would take decades to get them out of their penurious lives. We can't jerk 500 million out of the poverty. In the meanwhile we can launch such interplanetary missions (at not so great cost) to inspire thousands of budding future Engineers, Scientists and Technocrats which can pave the way for future innovation which in one way or the other will contribute positively to the Indian Economy in the long run.
how many hundreds of crores are spent on cleaning the yamuna every few years ?

anyone who moans about this mission should be beaten on the spot.

Every time India has one of these projects - the same old judgmental and self-righteous crows come to condescend and berate the efforts of India. Usually it is from the British - who despite having stolen and enslaved half the world, still find it galling that their colonies are doing things they cannot!

The fact that India has poverty is meaningless. Poverty exists everywhere. Children go to bed hungry and homeless in the USA, in Europe - everywhere, yet nobody questions their investment in technological pursuits. With most of Europe close to bankruptcy and nearing record levels of poverty - we don't find these same self-righteous individuals question the priorities of countries like the UK - a nuclear power with nuclear submarines and the 4th largest spender on defense to justify its defense needs. Nobody seems to be asking why a country like the USA with 17 trillion in debt operates tens of bases around the world and maintains the largest nuclear stockpile despite the cold war coming to an end?

Apparently these delusional and warped individuals would have India's government spend every cent they have only in clothing, feeding, etc - in an effort to turn India into their twisted idea of a socialist nanny state and not concentrate on building real capabilities and technologies. This when there are more billionaires in India that there are in Britain and where a house in New Delhi costs more than a home in London or Paris.

Indian space research has helped India earn its investment back by launching satellites for other countries. I am sure Indian officials will ignore all these socialists giving lousy suggestions. Pity their ideas didn't save the commies where these were implemented in abundance. The future belongs to science and research and Indian government is doing well to invest in this. Many millions of Indian youth get motivated to study engineering and tech due to these projects and hopefully we will be building upon the success of ISRO and taking any losses in our national stride. We don't need advice from the westerners who are obviously unhappy at our progress. Poverty can and should be removed through control of corruption in India.

China calls for 'joint efforts' after India's Mars mission

BEIJING: As India on Tuesday stole the march over China by launching a mission to Mars, Beijing called for "joint efforts" to ensure peace in outer space.

A rocket carrying the unmanned Mangalyaan orbiter lifted off this afternoon, making India the fourth country after the US, Russia and EU to send probes to Mars. It is due to orbit the red planet in September next year.

"Outer space is shared by the entire mankind. Every country has the right to make peaceful exploration and use of outer space," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a media briefing when he was asked about India's Mars probe.

At the same time, he said, the international community should make "joint efforts to ensure enduring peace and sustainable development of outer space".

the article is quite neutral and objective, i doubt you would see that in western media.
