Bangalore has a huge garment cluster. Plus massive Industrial Estates. Lakhs of women do work in factories. Bangalore is also a much larger city than Chennai, both in terms of population as well as in area.

Lots of them would use buses, many do live close to the clusters but also private transport in a much smaller percentage though. .

@ezsasa , the bigger problem with free transport is not really intra-city transport where I suppose some arguments can be made in favour but the damage is substantial when extended to inter-city transport.

yes, but socialist governments do no think that way. welfare conservatives will have to look at which is lesser damaging among the policies they would have otherwise employ.

Bulk of the transport happens through pick up vans mostly that are used to transport goods as well.

Typically something like these.

Having traveled on foot boards extensively in Chennai city buses, its not that the state cannot afford it, the people aren't ready to spend money for little comforts either.

A lot of it has to do with low wages even for the educated working class. People scrimp and save for education of kids, marriage, if lucky, buy property followed by gold & silk.

TN Govt many years ago had introduced AC volvo buses for city commuting but they ran empty and were eventually withdrawn and moved into short distance routes like Chennai-Mahabalipuram-Pondicherry etc.

Peeps would rather travel in rickety buses than pay a premium for comfort of an AC bus.

The mentality has not changed a great deal despite a bump in disposable incomes lately.

There was a large garments factory right next to my office in Electronic City. During change of shift, the road outside would be lined up with mini goods vans, goods carriers, lucky ones would get a tempo traveler or two but goods carriers form the bulk of transport. Some of them sit precariously on the edge which have resulted in fatal falls.

5 years back even IT employees used to wait for green or white board buses on OMR route..

Oh ok. Never saw one of those.

There were some buses(not many) which had 2+1 seats instead of the regular 2+2 seater to accommodate more standing passengers on crowded routes.

There are at least half a dozen Tier-2 cities that have much better-running infrastructure and can easily become the next IT hub.

Moving the entire ecosystem takes time. People can't just pick up their stuff and move to another state.

But having said that, if this threat goes into execution, then companies will start planning alternatives: "Karnataka Plus". Similar to how MNCs in China (China Plus) are exiting. What is unfortunate is, MNCs don't look at this just as Karnataka problem, they might start looking for alternatives to India.

We have an example in the form of West Bengal on how bad policies and bad decision-making can wreak havoc. Once the country's leading industrial state, it could have rivaled Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Today, however, it is a shadow of its former glory.

And any damage to the IT sector will open the Gates of hell for our country and people. Having served as a buffer in the absence of a strong manufacturing base, this sector's health is critical.

Parts of Bangalore doesn't have the worst traffic in the world without reason. Bangalore's ecosystem & talent isn't easily replicable elsewhere. Limited alternatives exist but there are no guarantees that TN & Telangana won't do something similar. Haryana has already tried something similar. This is a national disease, as @MuffleParch said, all of India will pay for such stupidity if it is actually implemented.
