The Home Ministry today informed a parliamentary panel that Sikh youths are being trained in Pakistan by the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI, to carry out attacks in India, as reported by the Times of India.

ISI has been trying to revive Sikh militancy in Punjab in its malicious agenda of destabilising India and is using social media and other means on the internet to radicalise the youth from the community.

Top Home Ministry officials, headed by the Union Home Secretary, have voiced their concerns over the Sikh youths residing in Europe, Canada and other countries being remotely radicalised by the ISI.

The ministry also said that the the terror organisations are now using much more sophisticated means to avoid detection by the intelligence agencies and to target the youth, especially Sikhs who’re a renewed target for the organisations.

"Sikh youth are being trained at ISI facilities in Pakistan. Interdictions and interrogations have revealed use of jailed cadres, unemployed youth, criminals and smugglers by Pakistan-based Sikh terror groups for facilitating terror attacks," the ministry report read.

After having been dormant for more than 25 years, Sikh militancy has recently seen an upswing with stray incidents of violence being reported from around the world. The militants are again been cultivated by the ISI which is manifesting in the form of social media propaganda.

Pakistan has had a history of funding and supporting anti-India terrorist organisations and the Pakistan-based Sikh terrorist groups are now reportedly under pressure from ISI to carry out attacks around the country.

China’s missile defense system for Pakistan aimed at India’s BrahMos missile

China to the rescue

This week China’s Academy of Sciences confirmed it had sold a sophisticated missile defense system which was considerably superior to its “home-made missile systems”.

The move signaled a dangerous level in arms race in the sub-containment with nuclear powers – India and Pakistan – engaged in a low intensity battle in J&K, helped along by Chinese help to the unstable Pakistan regime with ISI and Pak military calling the shots.

Pakistan has been busy on its trying to put together a missile defense system for several years with an eye on “thwarting” India.

Ababeel

In January last year Pakistan had “successfully test-fired” the missile capable of delivering multiple warheads known as MIRVs( multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle).

The missile known as Ababeel took the arms race to another level with Pakistan as the government declared it “ensured survivability of Pakistan’s ballistic missiles in the growing regional Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) environment.”

It was Pakistan’s answer to Indian’s BrahMos missile.

India’s BrahMos

Two years ago, the China’s People’s Liberation Army Daily in a statement had complained that India’s deployment of “supersonic missiles” on its border had “exceeded its own needs of self-defense and poses a serious threat to China’s Tibet and Yunnan provinces”

“The deployment of BrahMos missile is bound to increase the competition and antagonism in the China–India relations and will have a negative impact on the stability of the region,” the Chinese Army daily said.

China definitely felt a “counterweight” had to be created against India’s much touted BrahMos missile keeping its ally Pakistan in the loop.

India’s BrahMos missile which can travel at supersonic speed even at low altitudes makes it an “almost invisible” weapon difficult to detect an intercept.

Pak’s defense

A few years ago, Pakistan nuclear physicist Dr Samar Muarakmand who was responsible for conducting nuclear test after India tested its own in 1998, at a ceremony had said Pakistan’s missile defense system was prepared by “students of government college University” who had worked abroad in NASA and other organizations.

Dr Muarakmand’s statement illustrates Pakistan’s lack of depth in developing a missile defense system.

Shaheen & Gauri

Pakistan has however developed offensive weapons in an attempt to keep up with India.

Pakistan’s Shaheen and Gauri missiles along with the Babur cruise missiles boasts of reaching targets far into India.

However, due to its inability to develop a sound missile defense system in an event of first-strike, Pakistan even toyed with buying Russian-made S-400 missile defense system, according to reports.

The total cost of three regiments of S-400 system was a mega $2.5 billion. In end Pakistan decided to procure the Chinese system which was far cheaper and easily accessible since Pakistan already has several China-based projects running alongside with the CPEC project going on at full tilt.

India’s Star Wars programme

In the “new” arms race with China ably supporting Pakistan providing it with weapons both for defensive and offensive purposes, India has its hands full.

A few months ago, India successfully launched an advanced “anti-missile” system intercepting the short-range Prithvi ballistic missiles at Chandipur.

In 2007, India had entered the elite club comprising of US, Russia & Israel in developing a ballistic missile system. India also announced its own “Star Wars” programme to block nuclear missile hits on its territory.

7th Slide:

Pak’s missile shield

According to reports, Pakistan’s China-based system boasts of “highly sophisticated large-scale optical tracking and measurement system.”

“It usually comes with a pair of high-performance telescopes equipped with a laser ranger, high-speed camera, infrared detector and a centralised computer system that automatically captures and follows moving targets,” reports say.’

India will now be hard pressed to display its weaponry and put in more resources to counter Pakistan’s enhanced missile shield.

8th Slide:

Right side of History

As the arms race enters into a dangerous three-way battle, everyone, especially the Trump administration would be watching Pakistan and China’s next moves very minutely. The fact that the US has already squeezed its defense budget to Pakistan and engaged in tough talk over Afghanistan, chances are Pakistan will tilt even more on China, after all both have a grudge or two against the current Trump administration.

India will now have to tread carefully, not to be taken in by the race, it will have to strike a balance between development and defense because in an arms race, history suggests, is only won by the country which has a thriving economy that can sustain the “resource guzzler”.

India has to ensure it is on the right side of history and not in a “cold war style” Soviet Union vs USA mode. After all the world is watching.

S-400 Air Defence system Top Agenda of Defence Minister Russia visit

S-400 Air Defence system, Nuclear submarine is the Top Agenda of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Russia visit in April 2018.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s plate will be full when she arrives in Moscow on her maiden visit to Russia in the first week of April. Her priorities will include speeding up the process to ink the deal for S-400 air defence system, exploring the possibility of buying another nuclear powered submarine and ironing out problems of delay in the supply of critical spares by Russian manufacturers to the Indian Armed forces thereby hampering operational preparedness.

India and Russia in principle had agreed to ink the deal worth over 4 billion dollars for five S-400 systems in 2016. However, talks between the two Defence Ministries have not yielded desired results and Sitharaman is expected to urge her Russian counterparts to resolve the outstanding issues for faster acquisition.

Sehraie’s son joins Hizb; his choice, says father Ashraf Sehrai

Srinagar: Six days after Mohammad Ashraf Sehraie assumed the office of Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, his son has gone missing from home and seems to have joined militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.
Kashmir Inspector General of Police SP Pani confirmed to Kashmir Reader that Sehraie’s son, Junaid Ashraf Khan, is missing and his family has filed a missing report at police station Saddar on Saturday.
At around 1pm on Friday, the 30-year-old Junaid left his home in Baghat, Srinagar, to offer Friday prayers and since then has not returned, according to his family.
Junaid completed a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Kashmir University in 2014-15. After he went missing from home, a photo of Junaid appeared on Saturday, showing him clutching an AK-47 rifle. The text on the photo gave his name, alias, qualification and announced that he had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen on March 24, 2018, that is, Saturday. Junaid’s nom de guerre in the Hizb has been shown as Amaar, one who prays five times and fasts.
Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid said they are still verifying the authenticity of the photo. “The family filed a missing report and we are investigating the case,” he said.
Vaid suggested the Sehraie family to appeal to their son to return home and shun militancy.
Junaid’s brother-in-law, Younis Ahmad Rather, told Kashmir Reader that they learnt about Junaid joining militancy through the photo, just hours after filing the missing report with the police.
He explained that Junaid left home on Friday for offering prayers at Wazir Khan Masjid in Baghat and told his family he would go to Lal Chowk for repairing his mobile handset.
Younis described Junaid as “more hardline than his father” and that he denounced the ISIS, the Islamic State outfit.
In his last week’s Facebook post, Junaid had described the acronym ISIS as “Israeli secret intelligence service”.
“Islamic super state…not daesh or isis (israeli secret intelligence service),” he wrote.
“He (Junaid) was highly religious and very close to his abba (Sehraie). He would spend time reading at his home for days together. He was against ISIS and described it as Israel’s proxy,” said Younis who along with Sehraie’s another son filed missing complaint with police.

Ashraf Sehraie, soon after assuming charge of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, said in an interview to a daily newspaper, “Those raising ISIS flags are strengthening the roots of occupation in Kashmir”.
According to Younis, when Ashraf Seharie learnt of his son’s joining Hizb, he told Younis that it was his son’s “choice”.
“If he has chosen his path, it is his choice,” Younis quoted Sehraie as having said.
Junaid had a case registered against him in 2016 for his involvement in stone throwing and had appeared in the court hearing once in the case.
Junaid was the youngest among his six siblings, who include two sisters. Two of his brothers are working in the Gulf and the other one in a private company in Srinagar.
Last year, Younis said, Junaid had joined the company Paytm, an e-payments and e-commerce brand, but then put in his papers after the company’s manager came to his home to verify if was not lying about his staying home for a day. “That made him quit the job and he was now staying home,” Yoinis said.
Seharie, a longtime associate and friend of Geelani for the past more than five decades, is known for his hardline stand like his “Rehbar” Geelani, but has maintained a low profile in the pro-freedom amalgam. He became the TeH chairman after Geelani made an announcement about this early this week.
A senior police officer, who has served in Kashmir for nearly a decade, argued that Junaid’s joining the armed militancy would end the argument that “leaders safeguard their children”. “He (Sehraie) will not be taunted like Geelani,” he told Kashmir Reader.
The news of Junaid’s joining militancy sparked a debate on social media. Many argued that it was for the first time that the son of a top pro-freedom leader had joined militancy, hence setting a precedent.
A journalist who has covered the region for the past three decades, however, pointed out that Jamaat chiefs Hakeem Ghulam Nabi and Sheikh Mohammad Hassan’s sons were killed as militants. “Junaid’s case is not the first,” he said.
Amir Hussain, a Phd student at Islamia Jamia Millia University Delhi, whose key research areas are religion and motivation with emphasis on Hizbul Mujahideen agreed with the journalist. “Sehraie’s son’s case is not unique. Jamaat leaders have a history of sending their sons to join militancy,” he said.
“In 1990s, Jamaat was officially or unofficially the only religious group to back militancy. It had a kickback effect in the sense that what Jamaat practised on street had to come home as well. Militants coming from such households discovered gaps between the conversations at home and those taking place outside,” Hussain said.
