India has successfully test-fired indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile, Defence officials have revealed. According to reports, the launch of the Interceptor Missile was carried out by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast today. The anti-missile missile is capable of destroying any incoming enemy ballistic missile at low altitude.

In its attempt to create a multi-layer missile defence system in India, the DRDO has conducted this exercise for the second time in less than a month. An official said, “Today’s test launch was conducted in order to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode.”

In today’s trial in Balasore (Odisha), the interceptor missile was fired at a target in the form of a Prithvi missile (which played the role of a hostile missile) launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, which was launched at 10.10 in the morning.

According to officials, who provided an insight into the dramatic launch, after about four minutes the interceptor, Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile, which was stationed at Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal, received signals from radars about the incoming rogue missile. The interceptor was launched and managed to destroy the incoming hostile missile in mid-air.

DRDO claimed a huge success and said, “The mission was excellent and it was a direct hit.”

DRDO explained that the interceptor missile is 7.5-meter long, single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile, that carries a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator. It also has its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities aside from radars.

Last month on the 11th, in yet another exercise, but this time at high altitude of above 50 km, DRDO had successfully destroyed an incoming hostile ballistic missile off the Odisha coast. Last year in May, this time at low altitude, DRDO had carried out successful test launch.

Isro had on 15th February successfully placed a world record 104 satellites into space that included 101 foreign satellites and three Indian ones on in a single launch on the sturdy and reliable PSLV-XL ((Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket to cement the country’s position as a space tech global leader. Thereafter, except for 2 Indian nano satellites, all the rest 102 satellites have been reported as fully functioning in their desired orbits.

India had gone past Russia’s 37 in terms of the number of satellites launched by a single rocket achieved in 2014 that it had managed by using a modified inter-continental ballistic missile. In June 2016, India had achieved a national record after sending as many as 20 satellites into space in one launch.

(PTI) India today successfully test-fired its indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile capable of destroying any incoming enemy ballistic missile at low altitude.

This the second time that the missile has been test-fired in less than a month and is part of an effort to put in place a multi-layer missile defence system.

“Today’s test launch was conducted in order to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode,” a defence official said, adding that it was a low altitude trial.

The interceptor was engaged against a target which was a Prithvi missile launched from launch complex 3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here, taking up the trajectory of a hostile ballistic missile.

The target missile was launched at about 10.10 hours from Chandipur.

After about four minutes the interceptor, Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile positioned at Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal, getting signals from tracking radars, roared through its trajectory to destroy the incoming hostile missile in mid-air, in an endo-atmospheric altitude, the official said.

“The mission was excellent and it was a direct hit,” said a scientist of the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO).

The interceptor is a 7.5-meter long single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator, the official said.

The interceptor missile had its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and sophisticated radars, the official added.

On February 11, an incoming hostile ballistic missile target was successfully intercepted at high altitude, above 50 km of the earth’s atmosphere by an exo-atmospheric interceptor missile off the Odisha coast.

Earlier, a low altitude (endo-atmospheric) test of AAD missile was successfully test launched on May 15, 2016 from the same base.

A small doubt....
Instead of Barak 8, can't we use our AAD...

Or Barak 8 is much better missile which can take care of highly manovering targets which Ashwin missile can't take on due to its poor manoverability...

Experts please share your thoughts
Barak 8 is made for CIWS roles against supersonic missiles & aircrafts, not destroying ballistic missiles & re entry vehicles at high altitude.

Though, it's very good utilization can be destroying incoming cruise missiles, even easier for destroying subsonic targets like Babur missile.:D

After PDV, AAD scores a home goal. Indian anti ballistic missiles and systems are now coming up pretty fast and GOI's new focus is preparing an unpregnable IRON DOME (by installing AAD, PDV, S-400/500, Spyder, Barak 8/ER, Astra QRSAM, Akash 1&2) for entire India ala Israel so the threat of Pakistani missiles is blunted to an extent where India at its will can pulverize Pakistan without fearing its missiles. Good move by GOI.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

PDV successors (upcoming exo atmospheric vehicle), AAD, S-400 etc. series for ballistic missiles;

Barak 8, MR-SAM & other CIWS against cruise missiles

& SPYDER, Aakash, Akash NG, QR-SAM against aircrafts,

possibly other sort of laser & ion beam based defence systems too for every sort of purpose.

Once, all inducted & most imported, integrated with each other, it really won't even leave 1% of today's chances of carrying out a nuclear or conventional attack on any Indian city in a war.

Here's the best part:

Unlike ballistic missiles or cruise missiles which Pakistan has built to deter India, Anti-Ballistic missiles and complete IRON DOME System is very costly affair and if porkistan even tries buying one it will sink its whole economy into gutter and if it wants to build on its own it does not have capabilities and required know how. And even its sleeping partner lizard (china) won't help here as it will have negative effects on its own security. So porkistan ki to lag gayi.:rofl::rofl:

Forget building Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense system....

Even if they try to mass produce (I think they assemble NoKo & Chinese) missiles to overcome our BMD, they would become bankrupt before producing enough missiles...

Second thing, CIWS capable of supersonic cruise interception capability makes it even easier to take out sub sonic cruise missiles.

Even if we assume that we cannot protect all of the country, just the possibility of survival of land based missiles (apart from the K series) will make any nation be extremely cautious with us.
The public testing and the public praise by the big heads means these systems are maturing pretty fast.
Good going DRDO!

Good Article in the DDR but how well we are catching up with the BMD technology to counter MIRV capable missiles . in this case the so called ababeel of pakistan . below is a small extract from the article in DDR

http://www.delhidefencereview.com/2...allistic-missile-really-have-mirv-capability/

While one can question whether the recent Ababeel can deliver on all the claims made by Pakistan there is no doubt that Pakistan will move towards manoeuvrable and MIRV missiles to counter Indian BMD systems. From an Indian perspective, it is necessary to continuously monitor and assess the evolution of Pakistan’s capabilities and the connections these capabilities have with Pakistan’s war-making and deterrence strategies. This will ensure that Indian responses are measured, responsible and aligned with Pakistan’s true capabilities.

Missiles from Pakistan, irrespective of the type of warheads they carry pose a problem for India. Their very short flight times make it imperative that India develop systems for the early detection of missile launches for activating Indian countermeasures.. India will need to supplement its ground-based detection with space-based detection systems to better manage shortcomings in early warning capabilities.

This is something to look for.

PAD missile being tested against AAD.

That too its 12th in the series.

Left one is yesterdays test missile.

So they are testing PAD against AAD :hail::hail:

Looks like RV can do course correction or MaRV still AAD took it out.

Our both friends are looking at it and Chinese would say we had this tech back in 50s.

Now expect Bakis to announce another fake mijjile (Abhi-bhi-leak) test in 3...2...1

I also expect a flurry of reports on Bakis getting HQ-9 (S300 clones) from China.
