BBC News - India: Army 'mistook planets for spy drones'
India's army reportedly spent six months watching "Chinese spy drones" violating its air space, only to find out they were actually Jupiter and Venus.
Tensions have been high in the disputed Himalayan border area between the two nations in recent years, with India frequently accusing its neighbour of making incursions onto its territory. Things came to a head during a stand-off in April when Chinese troops were accused of erecting a camp on the Indian side of the de facto boundary known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). By that stage, Indian troops had already documented 329 sightings of unidentified objects over a lake in the border region, between last August and February, according to the Calcutta-based Telegraph.
It quotes military sources as saying the objects violated the LAC 155 times. So, the army called the Indian Institute of Astrophysics to identify the objects. "Our task was to determine whether these unidentified objects were celestial or terrestrial," astronomer Tushar Prabhu told the paper. Only once the objects' movements were noted in relation to the stars were they identified as planets. The Telegraph suggests the sentry ought to be forgiven, with planets appearing brighter as a result of the different atmosphere at altitude and the increased use of surveillance drones.
But this happened without doubt:This is hilarious, and perfectly encapsulates the needless paranoia adopted by the IA with respect to the PLA.
And, from the BBC article:Chinese troops were accused of erecting a camp on the Indian side of the de facto boundary known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
So the Indian soldier is blameless in this occurrence, but Chinese on DFI enjoy a distraction from actual Chinese territorial incursions. The Telegraph suggests the sentry ought to be forgiven, with planets appearing brighter as a result of the different atmosphere at altitude and the increased use of surveillance drones.
I would say the sentry did nothing wrong. The Telegraph suggests the sentry ought to be forgiven, with planets appearing brighter as a result of the different atmosphere at altitude and the increased use of surveillance drones.
And this also applies:To call the Corporal of the Guard or Officer of the Deck in any case not covered by instructions.
The rule here is "When in doubt, ask." If you are not sure what you are supposed to do in a particular situation, it is better to ask for clarification than to make an assumption or to guess.
Perhaps someone can post the standing orders for guard duty specifically for the Indian Army. I expect they would be very similar. To be especially watchful at night...
It is not serious, they may have thought it to be a bad example Chinese copy & pastesix months.... please tell me this is not serious.
they thought the planets jupiter and venus were a bad example of chinese copy and paste? It is not serious, they may have thought it to be a bad example Chinese copy & paste
How knows!! Chinese may have tried to copy the planets in the solar systems... BTW such incidents of mistaken identity were also reported by US Defense forces few years back... with the only exception of Chinese who do have the freedom to speak"¦they thought the planets jupiter and venus were a bad example of chinese copy and paste?
enough for the indian army to watch these two planets for six months?
Have you ever tried to watch planets with a pair of binoculars? Try it.they thought the planets jupiter and venus were a bad example of chinese copy and paste?

Another rumor has it that the object with a decaying orbit is a failed attempt by the Chinese to build an orbital deathstar--an effort that has failed due to their choice of Windows Vista as the primary operating system powering the vehicle's navigational array and the power management grid for the propulsion systems on board.
Given the choice between the two I see the second scenario as more likely.
"Send the fleet to the far side of Endor," was the quote from Chinese President Hu Jin Tao just prior to this announcement.
Does it even matter what incursions have occurred on both sides? The fact of the matter here is that the IA is so hilariously high-strung and/or incompetent that it puts out paranoid press releases about Chinese drones, and then ends up with egg on its face because they've been watching planets for the past six months. But this happened without doubt:

Well played.

Actually the Chinese members who find this incident hilarious have zero familiarity with sky gazing.Did you see the image? it was a valid concern.
Sure, the planets look like floating lights - but the positions of the planets are predictable to any first-year astronomer. If a sentry finds a spot there and reports it, why would it take six months for the IA to match it against a map of known stellar and planetary objects? Why would the IA nudge the media into reporting these rumors before checking that there wasn't some mundane reason for it? Why would they assume Chinese malfeasance by default when these lights are purely the result of nature? Why so much paranoia in lieu of common sense?Actually the Chinese members who find this incident hilarious have zero familiarity with sky gazing.
This is how Jupiter looks through a binocular. Not taking in account atmospheric distortion.

And this is how a military drone looks like(through a phone camera)

(The above video is a X-47 US Navy drone which was considered a UFO by thousands of Americans until USN clarified)
See the similarity?
I really doubt anybody other than the most seasoned astronomers would be able to discern these objects in the sky without proper equipment. A Lance Naik without equipment/trained in astronomy took the most logical and correct course of action and reported the matter to his superiors following military protocol(not to mention that the tensions were high already as Chinese had intruded before). The astronomers clarified and all was well.
The Chinese commentators unanimously find it hilarious though. And these are the same guys who post absurd physics defying photochops released by Chinese government/military and eat it all up like the useful idiots they are.
Actually, the army collected the data for six months and sent it for analysis and the astronomers quickly came up with the correct explanation for the phenomena.Sure, the planets look like floating lights - but the positions of the planets are predictable to any first-year astronomer. Putting the cart before the horse, are we? If they knew it was a natural phenomena they wouldn't have reported it. They made an understandable mistake and did their job, that is to report it to their superiors. There had been hostilities between the two sides in the recent past with the Chinese incursion and it always pays to be vigilantWhy would they assume Chinese malfeasance by default when these lights are purely the result of nature?
If there is one thing I have learned during my time on DFI, it is that China remains a threat to India and several other countries by its actions and aggressive policies. The evidence for that viewpoint emerges constantly. Apparently it is the job of you and a few others to try and refute that evidence here on DFI. Your work will be unending.Sure, the planets look like floating lights - but the positions of the planets are predictable to any first-year astronomer. Sure, now if only people were used to seeing planets in the sky at 2 PM in broad daylight.Sure, the planets look like floating lights - but the positions of the planets are predictable to any first-year astronomer.
