French - German rifle.
Americans - German Rifle.
Turks - reverse engineered German Rifle.
Brits - German or American Rifle?
Germany - Austrian rifle?

Total crap indeed.

What do Germans, Brits, French and Americans know about small arms development. It suits them pesky goras to import rifles from elsewhere. We are the largest standing army in the world with centuries of small arms innovation pedigree behind us. Very shameful.
Well said bro well said.............

This has got to be my biggest disappointment of this entire fiasco.

Tavor7 was tailor made for IA’s requirements and WOULD HAVE BEEN MADE IN INDIA. Already every IWI small arm has made in India components coming from
Their JV with Punj Lloyd. Instead IA chose to look the other way on this and went for a completely new to India 100% off the shelf foreign product.

A missed opportunity and clusterf@ck of epic proportions, just how the IA likes it.
This deal for Tavor7 & X95 could have only gone through by g2g deal. IWI was outbid by in both carbine and battle rifle tender by Caracal and sig respectively

To use any Bullpup rifle or carbine as the standard issue personal weapon system, literally a million servicemen would have to retrained. It is understood that these rifles and carbines has been fast paced for use at LOC most likely. At LOC, instead of specialised soldiers, normal infantry battalions are posted, and therefore, if bullpup is to be made standard at LOC, every new battalion would have to be trained before joining their posts.

When bullpup is arguably a better weapon system, ergonomically it is different and a common soldier might not be confident with the system at his posting at LOC. Even in Special Forces, bullpup is not every member's weapon of choice. I have seen enough M-4, SCARs and even AKMs in the hands of our spec ops boys, thay I guess Tavor is not universally adopted by our Spec ops boys.

And when IA decides that its primary role is to hunt animals for sports rather than fighting a next gen war, Lee Enfield will make a perfect fit for it.

Hell, Lee Enfield wasn't even the most accurate rifle in WW2.
You don't need the most accurate rifle. You need a good enough rifle. If Lee-Enfield could fulfill that role as DMR there is no need to change it.

For DMR you need a Semi-Automatic rifle.

No matter how many carbine, rifles, snipers, amr, tanks etc drdo-ofb combine presents to the army, they will be inevitably be rejected by the army after rigorous testing on one pretext or the other who has made a mindset to go after only videshi maal which are happily inducted without any testing.
The only indigenous things which will get inducted are strategic missiles like army where none of the foreign options are on offer.

May be, but they copied/manufactured is enough.
I don't see how manufacturing stolen designs benefited OFB in any better way than what Pakistan benefited from making properly licensed HK G-3s and MP-5s. They hold the designs and were free to upgrade/modify them as per wishes of local users. They also sell weapons manufactured using HK tooling in US civilian market and make money.

On the other hand, OFB's misadventures with stealing designs costed GoI dearly when FN threatened legal action and our Govt. had to pacify them by placing orders for other FN guns (like MAGs).

When all is said and done, I'm willing to say on record that the upcoming OFB-Kalashnikov JV would probably be the best thing to have happened to the small arms industry in India in recent times (save for IWI-Punj Llyod JV), despite my reservations toward selection of a 7.62x39mm AK platform as Army regular issue rifle.

New Carbine... Lastest scoop from Sandeep Unnithan
Ofcourse OFB is not content with having gotten the biggest piece of the pie (the 6.5 lakh rifle order). It also wants to snatch the small pieces from private enterprises as well (3.6 lakh carbine tender).

If i'm not mistaken IWI is still under MOD Blacklist so no way they can win direct tender. Hence why they tied up with Punj Lloyd. As far as I know, since last batch of Tavor bought for SF, the only IWI products in India are going to CRPF, BSF and other HM CAPF rather than any MOD forces

IMI was under blacklist. Either way, the IMI small arms division was sold off to a different holding company a long time ago (which later got named IWI). This happened much before the blacklisting.

There is no legal tussle stopping IWI in India. Even if there was a blacklisting, what do you mean by "hence they tied up with Punj Lloyd"? The Blacklisting explicitly prohibits the company from conducting business in India - that includes JVs and tie ups.

Further still, whether they go to MHA or MoD forces has nothing to do with blacklist - the blacklist would prohibit both.

New batches of IWI-made TAR-21s were being bought even after blacklisting. Recently, Army units also received X-95.

It seems to me that this is another design revision of INSAS line of firearms. This time they took SG540 (or better,SG550) series in mind and made a rifle with two-piece sectioned receiver so an uninterrupted picatiny rail could be mounted on top of the receiver, also such design is somewhat more accurate than standard kalashnikov's single piece receiver with dust cover one,as iron sights and optics are mounted on a much sturdier receiver than a simple piece of thin metal.

SG543,compact carbine version of SG540

SG553,compact carbine version of SG550

From stamped sheet metal receiver (standard INSAS) - > to milled receiver (Mk.1C Excalibur) -> to sectioned two-piece receiver (this new carbine),i like this transition, though.

If they can roll out a whole new line of firearms based on this design + incorporate tech/things from recent AK-103M deal,it would be great.

Finally,i'd say this once again,THIS IS WHAT INSAS SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT FIRST PLACE! *rant mode off*

IMI was black listed a long ago. It was later renamed as IWI & is involved in various projects with Indian defense industry and PSUs.
IWI has been a frontrunner in almost all small arms tender. It's a different matter that the tenders gets cancelled at the last time. But this time they just lost in the tendering process
