Seems like ERA armor and upgraded EW kit against ATGMs! Nice!
What! That's the regular old ERA Mark1.
This is the latest ERA upgrade (along with 1000hp & aluminium wheels).

Is this upgrade even being done, or was just an offer?

Isn't this a T-90?

India’s Cabinet Committee on Security approves procurement of 464 T-90MS tanks

Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved the INR134.48 billion (USD1.93 billion) procurement of 464 Russian-made T-90MS main battle tanks (MBTs) for the Indian Army (IA).

A T-90MS MBT demonstrates its mobility. India's CCS approved in early April the procurement of 464 of these tanks for the Indian Army. (Rosoboronexport)

Official sources told Jane's that the move by the CCS, which convened in early April and is headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the penultimate step in the process of acquiring the MBTs and will be followed by the signing of a contract between India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Russia's arms export agency, Rosoboronexport, during the next few months.

The MoD's Defence Acquisition Council approved the procurement of the tanks in November 2016.

Knew it was coming but

And yet they can only find the money to order 248 arjuns???

Army is a lost cause. Corrupt to the core, sabotaged every single indigenous project now

Unlike T-90 Bhishma, the new T-90MS Proryv-3 (with Syria inputs & T-14 borrowings) right now holds a significant the edge. It has better ERA quality & layout, hard-kill & study-kill APS, much higher APFSDS penetration, greater P/W ratio etc.

Arjun Mark 2 isn't ready yet, while Mark 1 has certain shortcoming & Mark 1A is uber heavy with questionable frontal turret-design. We have developed most of the subsystems tech, but not all & the platform is still being refined. I don't they'd go beyond the 248+118 order for present Arjuns.

There'll still be 2000+ T-72s to replace, because clearly we're not planning on upgrading them... haven't heard anything on the FMBT front in while too.

It has better armour and protection compared to T- 90 tanks and also it is advanced. But little disappointed by not ordering more Arjun tanks.
No it doesn't, thats just a claim...

Our indigenised T-90 reportedly use similar Kanchan armour (read on this forum, can't confirm) as Mark 1, which may have lesser protection at more than 20° frontal-arc due to lack of proper side-armour.
Both have similar effective armour thickness & while T-90's upper glacis maybe thinner, Arjun's turret have several weak points, that got even more highlighted in Mark 1A as the already weaker gunner/commander's side didn't get ERA.
Both have sub-par ERA tech & placement compared to contemporary versions of comparable tanks.

Both Arjuns are more advanced than our T-90S, except Mark1 cannot fire missiles, but not necessarily T-90MS which has several advantages on even Mark 1A as mentioned;
It has better ERA quality & layout, hard-kill & soft-kill APS, much higher APFSDS penetration, greater P/W ratio etc...
...Mark 1A is uber heavy with questionable frontal turret-protection.

T-90M

T-90MS

we are going to T-90MS, it's a Follow up order of T-90 so no trails are conducted ............ This deal was cleared back in 2016 itself, but now ordered.........

Any idea aren't we going for T90 M when it is clearly slightly more advanced than MS. Is it cause M is not cleared for export?

MS is the most advanced version.
Latest T-90 version in russian service is T-90M proryv-3.which is basically a t-90ms with some add ons like cage armour from lessons learnt in syria.

Relax, gentlemen.

We are buying technology. Nothing more, nothing less. We also, as a bonus to the technology, get 464 tanks to replace the old T72s.

What technology? The high velocity Armata gun. The Vacuum 2 round. The new ERA.

In due course, derivatives will find their way into the Arjun program.

The main problem with the Arjun program is a lack of spares and ammunition.

Spares will get sorted out. With the new orders; ammo is a problem. No one else manufactures 120 mm rifled ammo. Perhaps a swap of the 120mm rifled barrels with 125mm Russian smoothbore is on the cards?

Although there is also talk of Israeli help with the 120mm ammo. ‍♂
