India-US close to Co-Production of the Anti-Tank Javelin Missile in India
According to the Ministry of Defence, India amd the US have almost completed all negotiations on co-production of the state-of-the-art Javelin Anti-Tank Guided Missile.

The two countries in the recent past have come together to explore many joint military projects, most of them on co-production and technology transfer. India and the US are determined to take their military engagement to a higher level and forge a strong partnership.

It is believed that Washington will soon approve Technology Transfer of the Javelin Missile to India along with licence to manufacture the missile in large numbers. Tata Power SED is most likely to sign the deal with Javelin Joint Venture (JIV).

India will manufacture the most advance version of the hand-held missile which is called the FGM-148 Javelin which is used by US Forces.

Washington has always been protective about its high-tech military technology but the dawn of the new relationship between India and the US is opening doors to co-production and changing mindset. Washington has now agreed to part with the new-generation Javelin just for India.

India had pushed for the purchase of the Javelin in 2010 via the Foreign Military Sales route but the US had refused transfer technology for the system. The Request for Proposal was finally dropped by New Delhi.

Later in 2014, the Indian Ministry of Defence selected the Israeli Spike Anti-Tank Missile but the deal is still awaiting price acceptance.

The Indian Army wants to equip all its 382 Infantry Battalions and 44 Mechanised Infantry units with new-generation anti-tank missiles and phase out the French Milan missile. The army requires a total of 20,000 hand held Anti-Tank Missiles.

Besides the Javelin and the Israeli Spike Missile System which India intends to induct, it is also in advance stages of testing its home-grown vehicle mounted Nag Anti-Tank Missile System.
