India can develop a nuclear-capable missile with a strike range of 10,000-km, rivalling China's DF-31A missile that can hit targets 11,200-km away, but does not see the operational need for it given "the existing threat perceptions".

All gung-ho a day after the second test of the 5,000-km Agni-V, the country's first inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM), DRDO chief Avinash Chander on Monday asserted it would take just about "two-and-a-half years'' to develop a 10,000-km missile if required.

"Range is the least problematic area. We have the full capability to go to any range...it's just a question of additional propellant and larger motors. But, as of now, we don't see the need for a higher range,'' he said.

Agni-V brings the whole of China -- including its northernmost city of Habin - and Asia as well as parts of Europe, Africa and Australia within its strike envelope.

"I don't see why we should be diffident about our capabilities. Agni-V is definitely an ICBM,'' said Chander. Largely the preserve of the Big-5 countries, the US, Russia, China, France and UK, an ICBM usually signifies a missile over 5,500 km.

Agni-V will now be tested early next year in a "canister-launch version'' to give armed forces the requisite operational flexibility in swiftly transporting and firing it from atop a launcher truck. "It will reduce the reaction time drastically...just a few minutes from 'stop-to-launch'. Agni-V will be inducted within two years after three-four more tests. All future strategic missiles will be canisterised,'' said Chander.

Though the armed forces have Agni-I (700-km), Agni-II (2,000-km) and Agni-III (3,000-km), and are on course to induct Agni-IV (3,500-km) and Agni-V by 2015-2016, the lack of a long-range submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) remains a big gap in their nuclear deterrence capabilities.

Chander, himself a missile scientist, did say the 750-km K-15 SLBM would be tested from India's first nuclear submarine INS Arihant, which will soon head for sea trials'' after its miniature atomic reactor went critical'' last month, towards end-2013 or early-2014.

"K-15 is fully ready for integration with the submarine,'' he said. Though there is a 3,500-km K-4 missile in the works, the K-15 dwarfs in comparison to the over 5,000-km SLBMs wielded by the Big-5 nations. Quizzed about this, the DRDO chief said, "It's too early to talk of an SLBM which is also an ICBM.''

But DRDO is actively working on manoeuvering warheads or intelligent re-entry vehicles'' to defeat enemy ballistic missile defence systems as well as MIRVs (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles) for the Agni series of missiles.

Agni-V may be a "single warhead missile'' but Agni-VI and its successors will have MIRV payloads - a single missile carrying several nuclear warheads, each programmed to hit different targets - as well as longer ranges.

If we can send package to Moon, any place on earth is reachable, BTW now we are planning to send Nano car size package to Mars. So why this question ?

It is for the Brit whiners that we are officially scaling down the range of A-5 to represent it as our response to immediate security situation.
So, GOI / DRDO will not come out with longer than 8000km missile any time soon.

The scaling down is on paper only. Everyone knows the real range. A-5 MIRV would be the real deal.

American Trident-II SLBM has a range of 11,000 KM and Russia's Bulava missile has a range of 8,000 KM. DRDO should try to make this type of missile in the future.

India's Nuclear submarine programme was started by Indira Gandhi during mid 1970s. This is after US Navy became involved when it dispatched its 7th fleet against India during 1971 war with Pakistan. Now the situation has changed but we should be ready against all threats.

(Former) Air chief PV Naik in favour of flexing missile power
Hindustan Times New Delhi, June 11, 2011

India must develop strategic missiles with intercontinental reach to deliver warheads more than 5,500 km away, the country's senior-most military commander has said, proposing a dramatic increase in the country's strike range.

India plans to cap its strategic missile reach at 5,000 km, establishing a posture of deterrence against China and Pakistan.

India's rising global stature demands developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), air force chief Air Chief Marshal PV Naik told HT in an exclusive interview.

This is the first time that a serving military chief has argued for broadening India's strike capabilities beyond the immediate neighbourhood.

Naik, who heads the chiefs of staff committee, said, "India should pursue an ICBM programme to acquire ranges of 10,000 km or even more. Breaking out of the regional context is important as the country's sphere of influence grows. We have no territorial designs on any country, but India needs the capability to match its sphere of influence."

The air chief believes that an ICBM is within India's grasp: "There's no point capping the missile programme at 5,000 km. If we have the technical capability, we should build on it."

ICBMs can hit targets up to 15,000 kilometre away.

Ballistic missiles exit earth's atmosphere and re-enter to hit their targets.

Currently, the 3,000-km range Agni-III is the only missile in the Indian arsenal that can strike targets inside China. The maiden test of the 5,000-km range Agni-V intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) is being planned by the end of this year.

Five countries have deployed operational ICBMs with nuclear warheads - the US, Russia, China, France and the UK.

China's 14,000-km range Dong Feng-31 ICBM can target virtually the entire world.

A top Defence Research and Development Organisation scientist said India had the building blocks to develop ICBMs, "but where the warhead should go or what the range should be will have to be a political call."

Development of an ICBM could cost India upwards of Rs. 10,000 crore, about 6% of the country's defence budget.

Ashley J Tellis, senior associate, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said, "As of now, New Delhi has no strategic need for deploying ICBMs. But there's no legal regime that stops India from acquiring intercontinental reach."

Apart from Agni-III, the 750-km short-range Agni-I and the 2,000-km medium-range Agni-II have been inducted into the armed forces.

Again slacking..why limit ourselves :scared2:

I want entire world within range.
Why limit yourself?
How about you only get a limited pocket and there are unlimited demands.
Puting your money into something you won't need in 30 years is not a good strategy especially when you are struggling with double deficits.

LoL ------is who starved 30 million of their people to build nukes are now lecturing others on economy. Don't worry there is no surya A-5 and K-5 will be sufficient for the world.

It seems bulva, trident and df31 all have low altitude!
Agni5 3 stages fall off after pushing it to nearly 300km altitude. Warhead goes to 600 altitude, flat it out and dive.
If it, flat it out at lower altitude and maintain it and then dive, the higher velocity will give incr. Range like other icbms!

I think its not about investing in something we won't need in 30 years. All the present technologies will certainly become obsolete in 30 years. Rather its about investing in something that will be able to pack a punch even after 30 years:thumb:

Coming to deficits, it's better not to go into that topic at all. After all, I doubt if you would stop erecting a fence around your property if you fear that it is going to be grabbed.:cool2:
How much more so, if it is a matter of national security. The deficit is our burden and we are more than capable of handling it. You have no part in it.

we have lots of things in our mind HSTDV, Surya, SLBM, Long rang supersonic cruise missiles and very long range cruise missile.

Existing one are about to enter production. R&D is continues business and we want to continue it.

BTW we are aiming for Mars and already reached Moon, so their is no point in earth that we cant reach.

The deficit is not only your burden, it is your children's burden, and your children's children's burden.
