IAF Chief to review Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) progress in Moscow
Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne is going on a five-day visit to Russia next week, his first tour to Moscow after assuming the charge as Chief of the Air Staff. Air Chief Marshal Browne will leave for Moscow on August 8 and during his stay there he is likely to visit Sukhoi Design Bureau and some other Russian Air Force establishments, sources in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
His visit assumes significance as the two countries are working on some important strategic projects including Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) and Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) on 50:50 partnership basis. Prior to his visit to Russia, Air Chief Marshal Browne undertook a tour to Ojhar, near Pune where HAL is upgrading the IAF's frontline fighter Jets Su-30 Mki.
After visiting the facility, he talked about some design faults in the aircraft. Issues relating to problems in fly-by-wire systems in Su-30 have been raised before the Sukhoi Desing Bureau, he informed the newsmen yesterday.
FGFA project is likely to be reviewed during his Moscow visit as the stealth aircraft project is entering the critical design phase now. The Indian Air Force (IAF) will induct a total of 214 single and twin-seater variants of the advanced FGFA being developed jointly by India and Russia. The fighters are likely to be inducted by 2017. The IAF is looking for 166 single seater and 48 twin-seater versions of the aircraft. IAF Chief in the review meeting would apprise Russians sides about his requirements in the designs of FGFA, the sources said. The preliminary contract was singed for the project a year ago and the two sides are in hectic consultations to freez the design of this highly advance fighter. India is also intending to discuss basing air force, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and DRDO teams in Russia to monitor the progress of the joint venture project.
By 2017, the first lot of the aircraft is expected to join the IAF, and IAF would like to have a close watch on the progress of tests and trials of the aircraft, sources said. IAF chief will be back here on August 13.
