Happy Ganesh Chaturthi !

Just want to add a bit of history :

Ganesha was particularly worshipped by traders and merchants, who went out of India for commercial ventures. The period from approximately the 10th century onwards was marked by the development of new networks of exchange, the formation of trade guilds, and a resurgence of money circulation. During this time, Ganesha became the principal deity associated with traders. The earliest inscription invoking Ganesha before any other deity is associated with the merchant community.

There are several stories but basically all go like this..

One day Ganeshji had eaten a lot of ladus and decided to go on a ride on his mouse. A snake crossed their path and frightened mouse caused Ganeshji to fall down. The fall caused Ganeshji's stomach to burst open. Ganeshji hurriedly collected all the ladus and put them back in his stomach and then tied the snake around his waist.

Moon upon seeing this whole incident laughed at Ganeshji, Ganeshji got angry and hurled his tusk at the moon, alternatively he caused the moon to disappear and then reappear. (Explanation of the craters on the moon/ waxing and waving of the moon). And he cursed that anyone who would look at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi would be accused of theft.

There are 2 remedies for looking at the moon
1. To throw rocks at the moon while keeping the head down and urging Lord Ganesha to save oneself from the blight
2. Reciting the episode of the Syamantaka jewel; in which Krishna too was accused of theft for looking at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi.
Never heard this one. Thanx.

The story I heard goes like this:
On one of the Ganesha chaturthi(Ganesha's birthday), there was huge party thrown in Kailasa(abode of Shiva and his family). All the gods arrived. In the party, lord Ganesha danced with joy. But since he has a huge belly(Lambodhara), the dancing looked odd and Moon God laughed at the oddity. Angered by the ill-manners of Moon, Lord Ganesha cursed that anyone who saw Moon would be subject to unfair criticism/ill-reputation.

As more and more people were being subject to ill-reputation on the account of seeing the Moon, everyone started blaming Moon. Unable to hear the harsh words of all the people. Moon hid in Milk Ocean. He later emerged when the Milk Ocean was churned for Amrita(Elixir of eternal life).

Moon begged Lord Ganesha to forgive him and remove the curse. Lord Ganesha replied that his words could not be taken back. But he modified the curse such that instead of everyday, the curse would apply only on Ganesha Chaturthi.

As for the snake around the belly, there is another story: A thread ceremony is conducted for young boys to mark the begining of the education. So, a thread ceremony was to be conducted for Lord Ganesha as well. After that Lord Ganesha would begin his schooling. But if he completed his schooling, then he would become a threat to a certain demon named Mushikasura(Mouse demon). So, Mushikasura arrived at the thread ceremony disguised as a small mouse and ruined the sacred thread which was to be adorned on Lord Ganesha. Now, since the thread was ruined the ceremony came to a halt. Then, the snakes offered to replace the thread. And the ceremony continued. Lord Ganesha blessed the snakes and from that time he wore snake ornaments(nagabharana). Later, Lord Ganesha completed his studies and subjugated Mushikasura. Mushikasura realised his mistake and begged for forgivance. Lord forgave him and gave him the position of his vehicle. So, Lord Ganesha has a mouse as his vehicle. This story, it seems, contains the hints of Kundalini Yoga. In Kundalini Yoga, the Kundalini is represented as a snake. And Ganapati is the presiding deity of Muladhara Chakra. Muladhara Chakra is the first Chakra.
