GSLV (D5) with indigenous cryogenic engine

SRIHARIKOTA (PTI): Indian Space Research Organisation will flight test its indigenously developed cryogenic engine onboard a Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle by mid-2012.

"Our target is to launch the GSLV (D5) by June 2012 with indigenously developed cryogenic engine. Currently, a series of ground testing are on," ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan told reporters here.

Speaking after the successful launch of GSAT-12 onboard homegrown PSLV-C17 from here, he said the GSLV rocket would be used to launch communication satellite GSAT-14.

"We have had two failures – GSLV-F06 and GSLV-D3. We have identified the reasons and corrective actions are being taken," he said.

GSLV-F06 was used to launch communications satellite GSAT-5P in December 2010 and GSLV-D3 to launch GSAT-4 in April 2010, but both missions failed following some problems in the complex cryogenic stage.

On the progress of Chandrayaan-II mission, ISRO Space Commission Member and Director T K Alex said it was expected in the beginning of 2014.

"It is in progress. This time we are examining the lander, rover and the orbiter. The designing stage has been completed. The prototype of the rover is being made in Bangalore and the testing is going on," he added.

The Russian Space Agency was involved in developing the rover. "By 2014 beginning, GSLV will launch Chandrayaan-2, estimated to cost Rs 425 crore," he said.

On India's first manned Moon mission, Radhakrishnan said they were studying various aspects including the crew module.

"The Government has sanctioned Rs 145 crore for this and we need to consider various aspects well in advance including crew escape system, flight suit for crew members, environmental control," he said.

"PSLV is not sufficient for the manned mission and we have identified GSLV Mark III would be more sufficient as it can accommodate three crew members. Either GSLV or GSLV Mark III will be the two candidates for this project," he said.

PSLV-C17/GSAT-12 Project Director T K Anuradha said a team of three women scientists, including her, would monitor the satellite from the Master Control Facility in Hassan in Karnataka from Saturday.

During the days to come, various manoeuvres including deployment of antenna and switching on the payload would be carried out, she said.

"From tomorrow next five days will be crucial... We will have antenna deployment and after 10 days, satellite will start drifting...then we will need to switch on the payload...," she said.

Indigenous cryogenic engine successfully tested

Bangalore, May 12 — India Saturday successfully tested the indigenous super cooled cryogenic engine that will be used to fire a heavier rocket to put a communication satellite in the geo-synchronous orbit later this year, the space agency said.

"The acceptance test of the cryogenic stage of the heavy rocket was conducted for 200 seconds and the performance of the engine was as predicted," the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement here.

The flight engine test was conducted in the space agency's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) facility at Mahendragiri, about 670 km from Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The hot test included the cryo's endurance and functioning in vacuum.

A cryo-engine is a rocket motor that is fired by a mixture of liquid fuels (oxidiser) such as hydrogen and oxygen at very low temperatures of 20 degree Kelvin or minus 423 degree Fahrenheit and 90 degree Kelvin or minus 297 degree Fahrenheit.

The space agency's attempt to use its first cryogenic engine April 15, 2010 to launch a communication satellite on board a GSLV (geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle) was aborted as the heavy rocket plunged into the sea within minutes after blast-off from its Sriharikota spaceport, about 80 km north-east of Chennai.

The space agency plans to launch a series of space missions over the next two years using a combination of lighter (PSLV) and heavier (GSLV) rockets, including an experimental flight of GSLV-Mark III.

"We plan launch 24 satellites over the next two years, beginning with a GSAT in September carrying30 transponders on board the spacecraft, followed by a subsequent launch later this year to put another communication satellite in the geo-synchronous orbit with 12 transponders," a senior space official told IANS.

GSLV mission with indigenous cryogenic engine early next year

With a series of ground tests already over, ISRO was planning to launch its ambitious GSLV space mission with indigenously built cryogenic engine early next year, a top official said today.

ISRO chairman Dr K Radhakrishnan said that two major ground tests remained before integrating the GSLV vehicle for launch.

"A lot of ground tests have already been conducted and we need to do two major ground tests this year, scheduled from September to November. Once the tests are successful the cryogenic stage will be integrated into the GSLV vehicle for launch", he told reporters at the sidelines of a convocation here.

The previous two GSLV launches by the premier space agency were unsuccessful.

On India's Mars mission, he said ISRO was working to meet the November 2013 launch target.

So that means GSLV launch has been delayed, if I remember correctly, and still our scientists don't forget to boast about even a delay. Maybe they should talk less to media and concentrate more on their work. Some other scientist also boasted that Nirbhay will be tested in July-August. No reports as of now.

once cryogenic engine is successful at launch, then see the drastic changes in ISRO programs

What do you mean by boast? ISRO informed the media about the latest developments and you call that boast :frusty: Delays are part and parcel of such complex projects, if you are so full of confidence why dont you launch your own private space research agency and try to lauch satellites, then we will see who talks about boasting.

Nirbhay and ISRO ?

BTW regular information to be released about the progress of the various programs is part of every organization. It doesn't mean boasting, it means their prediction about the program and even they don't know about future troubles that may arise that can delay the program.

Re: GSLV mission with indigenous cryogenic engine early next year

they are supposed to inform nation about the present status of R&D in India. moreover this thing is of national importance as many of the satelites are launched by foreign agencies as india does not have the cryogenic engine of its own. this will not only save many millions but will bring the same amount as antrix is now a reputed firm launching satellites for cheap
