And it's still going strong. The P8 Poseidon also taps into the same pool of readily available first hand and second hand parts owing to the abundance of B737 in service and retirement.

This is a good strategy overall. Adapting civilian aircrafts for military roles and modifying them accordingly. Due to large number of 737 in service, we can be assured that there will be a remote chance of a shortfall in basic and essential spares. This makes maintenance easier and less troublesome.

I don't think the aircraft will have a radar like an AWACS. It is a maritime surveillance aircraft & not an AWACS.
