First Hindu Chaplain In US Military Is 'Groundbreaking'

Returning service members from Iraq and Afghanistan often struggle with readjusting to civilian life, health issues, and guilt.

Until recently, the 1,000 or so Hindus serving in the US military - and their families - lacked a military confidant who understood their religion and culture.

But now Captain Pratima Dharm has been appointed as the US military's first Hindu chaplain.

She says her position is significant not just to her military congregation, but also to the religion's one billion global followers.

How are the chaplains employed in the US army?

Are they attached to units or are they pooled.

Sir they are usually assigned to a base chapel which serves all faiths. At Fort Bragg one year that I was there they had a menorah with electric bulbs outside the chapel and I noticed that some lights were not working. I went inside to tell the Rabbi, but fortunately met the Presbyterian chaplain first. He explained the sequential lighting of the lights during Hannuka.
