According to a report by Defensenews.com, Indian navy has asked Indian government to clear a proposal to buy Two modern Diesel Amur class submarine from Russia , Emergency purchase has been requested due to Sinking of INS Sindhurakshak and depleting Submarine force . If such a deal goes through , Project 75I under which Indian navy will purchase 6 Diesel Submarine and Russians have offered Amur-class subs might be tilting towards Russian Manufactures .

Interestingly French shipyard DCNS, creators of the Scorpène-class submarine, which are currently been manufactured in Government Docks under project 75, had offered the Indian Navy two Scorpene submarines off the shelf as a quick stop-gap to stem dwindling force levels, compounded after sinking of INS Sindhurakshak tragedy.

Amur class submarine is a modernised version of the Kilo-class submarine with improved acoustic stealth, new combat systems, and an option for air-independent propulsion (AIP). same report also indicated that high-level team from Rosoboronexport was in New Delhi two weeks ago to negotiate for possible sale or lease of two Amur-class subs, with Indian team .

Purchase of two Amur-class submarines, directly from Russia , will be over the planned purchase of 6 diesel submarine under project 75I , Construction of Scorpène-class submarine in Indian docks are currently facing delays , which has lead to sinking of conventional submarine force of the Indian navy .

If the deal goes through , First submarine can be expected to be delivered to India by 2017-18 period , while Indian navy will get hands on two Scorpène-class submarine in the same period , which will ease pressure on Indian navy which plans to retire 4 older German HDW submarines at the same period.

Sounds logical no need to develop infrastructure or retrain crew as it is an improvement over the Kilo subs.

india is currently the world's biggest arms importer and it seems like this trend isn't gonna change if it continues to buy everything from other countries.

Can't help it. We have a 30 year plan which will end with the construction of 12 indigenous submarines. It started in 1998, and it is delayed by many years. So add another decade before we are completely self-reliant in this sector.

But I assume that those indigenous subs will still be based (at least in some part) on foreign projects, right?

By the logic all subs are based on the first sub.

I do feel that if we can built a SSBN/SSN the we must have a capability to built SSK's .

A Black project of some MATSYA CLASS is under way with results to be shown in few years(Read somewhere can't post link so.....)

Nice decision! will help us to atleast maintain our submarine fleet for some more time. The need for subs in India is greater then MMRCA deal... Can somebody tell me why we didnt chose Amur in first place instead of Scorpene. We already have infrastructure and experience with good old Kilo, why buy a complete different class?

There is not much that can be done with design today. They all look mostly the same. But electronics and materials will change.
