The fact that China has a market economy means that jet engine manufacturers in China can use sales (inside China, to private or state firms) to finance research, and they can buy from private suppliers inside China who are developing components for profit and competing with each other to improve quality and reduce costs. That's all a big advantage over the Soviet system, where competition was far more limited.
