Ive wondered whats behind the philippine military's lack of modernization. Philippines GDP is 356 Billion USD. If you guys spend 2% of GDP on defence, that would result in a 7.12 billion dollar military budget. You can build a fairly modern military with good deterrence value with that amount of money. But that isn't the situation. Why?
It's the post-Marcos Constitution that dictated that education should get the highest budget, which is a mistake. Second, America used to guarantee our security when they still had permanent military bases in our country until crszy nationalists decided to act like Nehru. Third, we are afraid of the military gaining too much power in society since they had a very bad rrputation during Marcos time and the culture of corruption that Marcos planted in them is still pretty much alive until now. In fact, the Philippine Military Academy (our version of West Point) should change its motto to: "THIS PLACE IS FOR THE BRAVE AND NOBLE AND NOT FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO BECOME MILLIONAIRES."

But me personally, I want a strong military. I believe that only when you can guarantee your own security can economic progress really happen.

India Philippines defense relation was high momentarily when GRSE (Kamorta based GP frigate) was selected as L1 for 2 Naval frigates for Philippines. But GRSE lost on the aspect of financial capacity. L2 (Korean Shipyard ) won the tender.
First of the Frigate will join the Philippines Navy shortly.

But, I am sure our Indian shipyards will surely participate in tendering of future OPV and Corvette acquisition program for Philippines Navy.

Vietnam is thinking to buy akash systems too.
India +Vietnam can bug Chinese a little.
Plus in long term ties with Vietnam will benefit Us.

Even US-JAPAN-INDIA-AUSTRALIA and NZ alone are already enough to contain China. VIETNAM and the PHILIPPINES can help in our small ways by acting as your unsinkable aircraft carriers.

With our traitor Chinese puppet President in power at the moment, i doubt a deal is possible. But next administration might be another story.

You do not need an exclusive port in the Philippines. You can negotiate for flexible basing in several ports much like our current arrangment with the US for air bases.

Regarding trade, do you eat a lot of bananas?
1.We need a port where we can refit ships for long periods of time in the event of a flashpoint in the South China Sea.
2.The Mallus cover that end along with rice, coffee and beans when they are not striking! :biggrin2:
We could do with semiconductor and electronics parts. Need those shiny smartphones to be cheaper.

When i talk about Asian countries from indian point of view i don't include Americans.

The extremely positive relationship with Vietnam is a result of our act east policies from 90s we focused on Vietnam. Same with Thailand.

Chinese are much more intelligent. In today naval environment you don't start a war you create anxiety which Americans try to make for Chinese by sending ships in South China sea. China do the same with india by paying money and buy out the nation like siri lanka and others to build port IOR to give indians a anxiety and if we cannot match them in indian ocean then our aim to become a net security provider gets disturbed.
To balance things out we need to corner Chinese in Asia with Asian countries such as Philippines Vietnam and japan.

It was not the Americans who used the term indo - pacific it was the Japanese president in india in 2009 the one who used this term.

This is not about a war in which we need other it's a game of influence.

India's Look East policy is an effort to cultivate extensive economic and strategic relations with the nations of Southeast Asia in order to bolster its standing as a regional power and a counterweight to the strategic influence of the People's Republic of China. Initiated in 1991, it marked a strategic shift in India’s perspective of the world. To contain Chinese Asia holds the key. From 1962 india worked to improve the relationship with anti Chinese countries.
And had a break through with Myanmar to which used to be a pro Chinese nation.

To be honest with you, sure we like better relations with India but for us India is simply too far away to matter against China. And on the economic front there's not much trading we can do.

HHI for sure. But, I am not following the program keenly after GRSE lost out. There are some controversies in execution of that contract but think, its probably the first modern offensive platform that they are receiving, so the opportunity are far more larger.

The Koreans gave 1 old corvette to sweeten the deal and a lot of money to Bong Go for the Korean battle management system (which the military wanted to source from Europe).

Unless duterte grows a spine , Phillipines will remain a chinese puppet , soon they will start exporting chinese labour replacing filipinos jjust like in Pakistan. Chinese due to century of humiliation have learnt that war is the last of the last step , deception is the way to go

The Australians are so non-committal to a coalition against China that they are willing to overlook their citizens being jailed by the Chinese and not make a noise. They are deeply penetrated. Same for NZ.

Philippines is so corrupt that China will never lose hold of it now. Duterte doesn't look like going anywhere in the near future.

The only genuine coalition to take on China can come from Japan-India-Vietnam held together by the USA. The biggest question though is - Will the USA (particularly its deep state) be wise enough to answer to India's concerns.
Its a short window of 5-10 years for the US deep state to get India on its side because the moment congress comes back to power in India it will go back to the policy of appeasing China in face of daily humiliation.

The US and UK provided India with a lot of weapons in WW2. And immediately after WW2 India could have positioned itself closer to the US so that it can take advantage of the relatioms from both security and economic perspective. But then again the smug Nehru thinks that he is better and can bring Nirvana to India with his be friends with everyone (and thus with no one).
Is the bold part a fecking joke or some kind of ignorance? Because if it isn't then its rather offensive if you're knowingly claiming that US / UK helped India in WW2 while all the help was the other way round.
We sent 2 million soldiers to a war that was not ours in any way. There was a far smaller chance of an allied victory had it not been for the Indian soldiers.

in term economy china is Japan/india/phillippine/malasia/aussies/NZ one of the biggest trading partner. No country gonna dmg that relationship unless something extreme happened. US hoping india go against china, while india hoping US do that too, no one want to lose one of the biggest market in the world, and no one want to make the first move. Japan is too busy making deal with china due to sino-us trade wars, same with german.
