Rest in Peace Sir!
Hi Matt. Good to see you pay tribute to RayI deeply regret to hear of the passing of Brigadier SK Raychaudhuri. He was a member of the World Affairs Board for many years, and a true scholar and a gentleman. I did not get an opportunity to meet him in Kolkata while I sojourned in Bengaluru in 2011, but I will be eternally grateful to him for sponsoring my visa during a troubled time for me, so I could peacefully rest my head half a world a way.
I wish I had done more to keep in touch with him, and words cannot express the deep mourning I have for his passing. Ray lived a more fulfilling and purposeful life than many of us could ever hope to, with a long, exemplary career of service to his nation, a true patriot who served his nation for decades, in both the difficult years and the good. This comes as quite a shock to me, and I wish I hadn't lost the opportunity these past few years to speak to Ray at least one last time.
Wherever you may be Ray, I hope you can read this and I wish the best for your family in this difficult time.
It is a poem that will remind me of Brig. Ray to forever. It is very moving and expresses our combined feeling towards our soldier who was a true Gentleman.
God looked around his garden
And He found an empty place.
He then looked down upon this earth,
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw that the road was getting rough.
And the hills are hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids
And whispered "Peace be thine".
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn’t go alone
For part of us went with you
That day that God called you home
RIP
It's been an honour getting to know you Sir.
