Sunga Empire - A scene which looks like the story of Ravana abducting Sita?

Another example from Sunga art.

The iconography becomes fully realized by the Gupta Empire.

One of the most recurring goddess from the Sungas. It's a goddess with an abundant amount of weapons coming out of her hair. Why was this so popular among the common folk? Was it due to the constant wars after the break up of the Mauryas? Is this a prototype iconography to Durga and other goddesses?

Iconography of Durga taking shape - Mathura, 2nd Century AD

Gupta Empire, 4th-6th Century AD

Modern Example

Boss, is this a hentai? Because it looks like it.
Look like our ancestors were more modern than we are today.
There's a lot of erotic material back then - it gets much more erotic than that. They were pretty comfortable with it. It's a completely different India back then compared to now. Outside cultures have influenced the social norms what is acceptable and not.

Begram Ivories, 1st - 2nd Century AD
What an interesting image. This could show the ancient horse trade. Central Asian horses were prized, one of the reasons the Han Empire expanded into C. Asia was because of this lucrative horse trade.

In this ivory you can see what I think is a C. Asian horse trader showing off his breeds to a Indian. The Indian has an women guard with the typical ancient Indian broad sword.

Very true. Horse trade was one of the major attraction for foreigners to venture into ancient India. Below is depiction found at the bottom of Viay vittala temple at Hampi.

From Left to Right, you can see them in order of arrival in India. First were the Chinese, then the Persians, followed by Mongols and finally the Arabs. On closer inspection of the carvings, one can distinguish the difference in depiction of men and the horses specific to their region.

Another example from Sanchi, Satavahana, 1st Century BC.

It's shown as late as Vijayanagara art.
