Military ties on mind, Beijing set to attend Aero India show

Beijing is likely to send a team for the Aero India show being held in Bangalore next month after an invitation was sent to the Chinese Air Force chief by the IAF. While it is unclear if the officer will attend, a senior-level delegation is expected to come.

The mega event attracts prominent aerospace companies of the world.

The invite comes amid indications that Beijing is reaching out to New Delhi and wants a new kind of engagement. It marks a change from 2011 when India had excluded China from the event but had sent out a last-minute invitation to its embassy in New Delhi. At the time, military relations were at a low over the denial of a visa to an Indian lieutenant general, as he was commanding troops in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, that seems to be a thing of the past with India going all out to ensure a cordial atmosphere at Aero India for the visit.

A detailed note is said to have been prepared to ensure that there was no discomfiture on account of the Taiwanese participation. So while Taiwan-based companies are welcome, they will be participating in their individual capacity and not as part of a national delegation. Neither will the name of Taiwan as a nation be allowed to be mentioned at individual stalls, nor will its flag or national anthem figure anywhere.

There is an assessment that China is reaching out to India given its recent engagement on the eastern side, including the island disputes.

After the recent visit of Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma to Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lei spoke of building "new type of military to military relations featuring lasting stability and friendly cooperation". After the meeting, the Chinese spokesperson termed military relations between the two countries as an "important indicator of the depth of the bilateral cooperation".

A joint army war game is also expected this year after a gap of almost four years.

Rafale, MiG-29 & F-16 Demo Teams To Star At AeroIndia 2013

I can now confirm that 3 Dassault Rafale fighters of the Rafale display team will fly in for Aero India 2013, kicking off on February 6 at the IAF's Yelahanka base. Two will be on air display duties and the third, a special static display. Also, the Russian Knights MiG-29 display team and a USAF F-16 display team will be performing at the show.

The Pilatus PC-7 Mk.2 prop trainer, which the IAF has ordered, will debut at the show. Eurocopter will display an AS565 Panther, on offer to the Indian Navy and Coastguard.

Boeing will be bringing in a USAF C-17 Globemaster III like it did last year, along with a full-scale model of the ScanEagle. They won't be flying in a Chinook or Apache, sadly -- both platforms that are in line for contracts with the IAF.

The Indian Air Force is expected to display a C-130J Super Hercules and the first of AgustaWestland AW-101 VVIP helicopters that began arriving in Delhi last month.

UPDATE @ 13.45 on Jan 21: USAF F-16 demo team to perform at Aero India. (Not the Thunderbirds).

Aero India to miss its chief attraction combat aircraft?
NEW DELHI: Three aerobatic display teams are expected to be the main attraction for the biennial Aero India show starting February 6, which appears to be a scaled down affair with many a combat aircraft giving it a miss following finalisation of a multi-billion dollar IAF deal.

Addressing a press conference on the Aero India show, Secretary (Defence Production) R K Mathur claimed the ninth edition of the show in Banglaore was expected to be "bigger and better" than the previous ones.

However, ministry officials said the number of aircraft who have confirmed participation in the show is 52 this year so far while 63 aircraft had come in 2011. The number of companies who have booked space at the show is 607 while 675 took part in the last edition.

Asked which of the six medium multirole combat aircraft (MMCA) aircraft, which have been main attractions of the aero show, are coming in this edition, Mathur said only the French Rafale and American F-16 have confirmed their participation till now.

The six aircraft including American F/A-18 and F-16, Russian MiG 35, Swede Saab Gripen, French Rafale and the European Eurofighter were regular at the last three editions of the show in view of the the then multi-billion dollar tender for 126 aircraft by the IAF.

However, after the contract was bagged by Rafale, other aircraft were not expected to be at the show in this edition.

Mathur maintained the show is "not MMRCA centric". "The highlights of the show would include the participation of three aerobatic display teams including the Czech Red Bulls team, the Russian 'Russian Knight' team comprising the Su-27 combat aircraft and IAF's ALH Dhruv Sarang helicopter display team," he said.

The largest contingent at the show would be from the US with 67 of its companies participating followed by France, Russia and Israel.

Asked if China has confirmed its participation, Mathru said, "China has been invited for the show as a formal letter has been sent to them and we are awaiting their confirmation from them about their participation."

A total of 78 countries would be sending their representatives at the aero show of which 27 would be showcasing their products at the mega event.

Bangalore: The Indian Army will be handed over the first two weapon system integrated (WSI) version of Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH-Mk-IV) Rudra, during Aero India 2013. Confirming to Express on Thursday, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) chairman R K Tyagi said that Rudra will also be available for customer demonstration flights at show. "Rudra will definitely add more teeth to Indian Army and we will roll out more production units to the squadron,"Tyagi said. Express had earlier reported that around 70 Rudras will fly out of HAL to meet Army's initial requirements.
"In addition to the redundant flight critical systems, IR suppressor, armour panels, crashworthy features, self-sealing fuel tanks enhance the survivability of the helicopter in the battlefield environment," Tyagi said.Rudra can carry a mix of weapons, providing it with capability to search and destroy any target. Systems like electro-optic pod, helmet-mounted sight, fixed sight facilitating firing of the onboard weapons (20 mm turret gun, 70mm rockets and Air-to-Air missiles), makes Rudra an unforgiving machine.
He said Rudra's rigid rotors have extremely high agility and manoeuvrability. With its higher powered engine, the chopper canundertake missions up to altitudes of 6 km . "With such capabilities, Rudra is unmatched in the world, in its class ," claims Tyagi.
Tyagi confirmed that HAL hasplans to integrate additional new systems on Rudra, including Infra Red jammer, Data Link, obstacle avoidance system (for Army), wire cutter (for IAF) and NBC (Nuclear Biological and Chemical) sensors.
When asked about ALH Dhruv's (earlier version of Rudra) export status, Tyagi said three more countries have shown interest in these choppers. Over 130 Dhruv helicopters are inoperation now, with Indian Army flying 110 and 12 with Indian civil operators. Ecuador, Nepal,Mauritius and Maldives also operate Dhruv choppers.

Rumor had it that Chinese companies were also invited to the event. Normally, they were shut out from this event by India.

Global firms eye lucrative contracts at India air show

South Asia's biggest airshow kicks off in India on Wednesday, where global armament firms will be vying for multi-billion dollar contracts from the world's biggest importer of weapons.

India launched the biannual Aero India event in 1996, three years before a mini-war with Pakistan prompted New Delhi to go on a global shopping spree for tens of billions of dollars worth of hardware to equip its million-strong military.

A total of 78 countries have confirmed their attendance, while companies from 27 of them will showcase their latest products at the five-day show in Bangalore, the hub of India's aviation, space and IT industries.

India's state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), which signed a deal with Russia in 2010 worth $30 billion to jointly produce 250 to 300 fifth-generation fighter jets, says it hopes to ink major contracts during the show.

"A number of memorandum of understandings in the pipeline are likely to be signed at the airshow," a senior HAL source said without elaborating.

Seattle-based Boeing last year pipped its rivals to provide India with 37 attack and heavy-lift helicopters worth more than one billion dollars. Negotiations are currently underway.

Such negotiations are not a guarantee of sale in Indian defence deals, which can be excruciatingly slow and are often held up by administrative problems and red tape.

India in February last year chose Dassault Aviation of France as the preferred bidder in a $12 billion deal for 126 fighter jets, but talks are still underway with no progress expected this financial year.

Other deals still awaiting a green light include a $600 million contract to supply 197 helicopters to the Indian army, which was scrapped in 2007 after being awarded to the European manufacturer Eurocopter.

The helicopter unit of aerospace giant EADS in 2010 resubmitted a bid for the same deal, with Russia's Kamov also in the running.

The United States will provide the largest contingent of companies at the show, with 67, marking growing ties between the two countries, the chief organiser said in New Delhi.

France, Israel and Russia -- India's biggest arms supplier -- also have a large presence at the show, said India's Defence Production Secretary R.K. Mathur, adding that neighbouring Pakistan had not been invited.

Deadly border tensions flared last month following exchanges of fire in disputed Kashmir which left five soldiers killed on both sides of the highly militarised frontier.

Mathur said China, which fought a brief but bitter war with India over a border dispute in 1962, was likely to attend.

"China has been invited for the show as a formal letter has been sent to them," he said.

Israeli state-run armament firms are scouting to sell unmanned aerial vehicles to bolster India's modest fleet of surveillance drones, some of which are used in the country's struggle against Maoist rebels.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute in March 2011 said India received nine percent of global arms transfers from 2006 to 2010, making it the world's largest importer of weapons.

Russian armaments accounted for 82 per cent of Indian military imports, the global arms transfer monitor said.

'Iron Dome'---Israel To Display Innovative Aero-Space, Defence And Security Technologies At Aero-India 2013

Among the systems which will be on display in Bangalore are some that have been used successfully under highly challenging combat operations, proving the effectiveness and reliability of Israel's defence systems. One of the highlights that will be displayed for the first time in India, is the 'Iron Dome' system, the indigenously developed, game-changing – first of its type – missile interception system. The 'Iron Dome' recently performed with notable distinction protecting over half of Israel's population from a barrage of over 1500 rockets and missiles.
