Indian firm Maini Group to make components for Eurofighter Typhoon, Airbus planes

BANGALORE: In one of the largest aerospace outsourcing contracts awarded to a mid-tier Indian firm, Bangalore-based Maini Group has bagged a multi-million dollar contract from German engine maker MTU Aero-Engines to make components for Eurofighter Typhoon and Airbus planes.

The engineering group, best known as maker of Reva, the country's first ever electric passenger car, will develop engine components for multi-role combat aircraft Eurofighter Typhoon and next generation A380 and A320 planes of Airbus, the world's largest aircraft maker. The deal will be signed during the Bangalore Air Show (Aero India 2011) which takes off on 9th February.

"With the commercial aero-engine market expected to generate about $740 billion sales over the next 20 years, we are now looking forward to growing the relationship with MTU on a strategic level," said Naresh Palta, chief executive, Maini Aerospace. "The group will invest around $30-40 million in the next 4-5 years to scale up its infrastructure and capacity," said Palta, who was earlier an executive director at public sector major, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL). Last year, the group bagged an outsourcing contract worth up to $10 million from Marshall Aerospace , subcontractors for Boeing , the world's largest aerospace company.

"The timing of Maini's transformation to Aerospace is right. It will take them another five years to actually see the results," says B Mahadevan, professor, production and operations management, at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B).

The contract work will be led by group companies Maini Precision Products (MPP), including its subsidiary company Maini Global Aerospace (MGA). The multi-year contract now positions the Mainis as strategic suppliers to the German major that has total revenues of $ 3.5 billion and partners with aero-engine manufacturers such as GE, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce to source aero-engine components.

"For them this is the India test, to see whether private industry in India can actually deliver as per the German standards," said Gautam Maini, managing director, Maini Precision, who led the aerospace foray for the group even as younger brother Chetan Maini made waves with Reva. "Aerospace is going to be a big market in 5-8 years. The business cycle ranges between 7 and 8 years. It was a quantum shift, something we had to believe for a long-term," says Maini.

Maini Aerospace , which got Snecma, a major French manufacturer of engines, as its first customer, has now developed more than 900 build-to-print parts in the past six years. These involve contracts from global customers such as Safran, BAE Systems , Eaton, Goodrich and Magellan Aerospace . It is also working with state-owned HAL to make components for various projects.

India invites China for Bangalore aero show 2011

India has decided to invite a Chinese delegation for Aero India in Bangalore starting February 9, a week after that country along with Pakistan and Iran did not figure among the participating countries for the biennial Air Show.

Chinese journalists would now also be allowed to get accreditation to cover the show and officers concerned have been asked to provide full cooperation to them, Defence Ministry officials told PTI here Sunday.

"The External Affairs Ministry gave its clearance for allowing a Chinese delegation to visit the show on Friday and necessary steps are being taken to facilitate their visit," they said.

The Chinese delegation for the show is likely to comprise its military officials based in the capital, they added.

Chinese journalists were barred from covering the show as the Defence Ministry did not keep any slot for China in the list of countries whose journalists could apply online on its website to make them eligible to cover the five-day event

Briefing newsmen on the show last week, Secretary (Defence Production) Rajkumar Singh had said the decision not to invite China was taken on the advice of the External Affairs Ministry.

India had invited China for the 2009 edition of the mega event but none had turned up for the show

Officials had said China, Pakistan and Iran were not considered by the committee concerned which selects countries to be invited for the show.

Relations between India and China of late have been marked by a continuing row over Beijing's visa policy under which residents of Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are given stapled visas instead of the regular stamped ones.

T he situation took an ugly turn last year when China denied a proper visa to the then Northern Army Commander Lt Gen B S Jaswal as he was based in J and K.

Jaswal was intending to travel to Beijing to take part in the Annual Defence Dialogue between the two sides.

India reacted strongly to this and suspended high level defence exchanges but China refuses to relent.

Eurocopter Brings AS 550 C3 Fennec Helicopter to Aero India 2011

The AS 550 C3 Fennec recently completed field trials with full mission equipment for the Indian Armed Forces reconnaissance and surveillance applications, demonstrating its capabilities as the successor to the country's existing fleet of Indian-produced Cheetah and Chetak helicopters - both which are based on Eurocopter rotary-wing aircraft.

"We are very happy with the Fennec's performance during the recent trials, and are confident it is the ideal proposition as the rightful successor to the Cheetah and Chetak," explained Rainer Farid, the Eurocopter Vice President of Sales for South Asia. "By participating in the key competitive tenders with our best products, we hope to continue to support India in acquiring the right mission equipment and developing a strengthened aerospace industry."

The military-certified and combat-proven AS550 C3 Fennec has exceptional performance at high altitudes and in hot weather conditions. In addition to operating in Chile's Andes Mountains at altitudes over 5,000 meters, Fennec helicopters have landed on Mount Everest and the Sziachin glacier in the Himalayas. Last month, a Royal Malaysian Navy Fennec assisted in the rescue of a hijacked Malaysian chemical tanker and its crew, firing on the Somali pirates' mother ship to keep it at bay.

Along with the Fennec's presence at Aero India 2011, Eurocopter's participation will focus on the AS565 Naval Panther - a version of the Dauphin family, which is well suited for requirements of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The Panther is used around the world in a wide range of roles, including combat assault, fire support, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, and MEDEVAC.

Also spotlighted at Aero India 2011 will be Eurocopter's EC135 in the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) configuration. The EC135 is tailored for HEMS operations, with a large cabin, rear and slide access for easier stretcher loading, a protected tail rotor and the lowest noise signature in its category. It is the world reference for medical transportation and rescue, and the sales perspectives of this helicopter are high in India.

Eurocopter currently holds a leading position in the Indian military and civil markets, building this presence through strong partnerships. For the military sector, Eurocopter developed a very successful 40-year association in India through two cooperation agreements with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Today, HAL is a key element of Eurocopter's global supply chain, producing shipsets of airframe components for its Ecureuil/Fennec helicopters. In the civil market, Eurocopter has successfully formed partnerships for 25 years with Pawan Hans Helicopter Limited which is Eurocopter approved maintenance center on Dauphin. Eurocopter also approved the Indocopters maintenance center on AS350B3 and EC155.

Eurocopter inaugurated its Indian subsidiary in October 2010, reinforcing its support and services network throughout the country and further developing the company's four-decade relationship with Indian industry. Eurocopter is the world's first major helicopter manufacturer to establish such a subsidiary in India, which underscores its commitment to the development of this market.

"The Indian helicopter industry has displayed great potential over the last few years with an annual growth rate of 20 percent," explained Marie-Agnès Veve, the CEO of Eurocopter India Pvt. Ltd. "Given the country's expanding economy, its size and challenging terrain - as well as the industrial potential - the future of this industry is very promising. Over the next few years, we hope to become the no. 1 supplier for the civilian, government and parapublic markets in India."

Eurocopter currently has 23 civil and government customers operating its helicopter products in India, with these rotary-wing aircraft performing duties that range from the support of offshore oil and gas drilling to VIP, corporate and passenger transportation. In addition to reinforcing its current presence, Eurocopter also is working with Indian institutions, companies and associations to develop new markets such as law enforcement, helicopter emergency medical services, disaster management and utility.

Eyeing the growing private air charter market in India, Dassault aviation would showcase its long range business jet 'Falcon' at the upcoming Aero India show in Bangalore. The French firm would also display the Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft which is in competition for the USD 10 billion Medium Range-Multi Role Combat Aircraft (M-MRCA) deal of the Indian Air Force.

Claiming 60 per cent share in the Indian aviation market in the long range/large cabin aircraft category, Dassault Falcon is consolidating its position with increased local customer support and parts services in the country, a company spokesperson said.

Dassault Falcon is the part of French aircraft manufacturing company Dassault Aviation and deals with the Falcon business jet segment of the parent enterprise.

"We have been encouraged about the potential for long term growth in the business aviation in India. Business jets are now seen in the region as a powerful tool to enable quick and convenient access to customers within the country and worldwide," John Rosanvallon, president and CEO of Dassault Aviation said.

Presently, more than 20 Falcons are operating in the country from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Another 15 aircraft are scheduled for delivery to Indian customers within the next two years.

Almost half of the order for the new aircraft are for the Falcon 7X aircraft which is the first business jet with fully-digital flight control systems.

To support its growing fleet in India, the company has now based a customer service manager and opened a new spares distribution center in Mumbai.

Talking about the future potential of the company in the Indian market, Rosanvallon said, "I have no doubt.. that we will maintain a high level of market share."

He further added that the worldwide economic crisis did not impact the company's regional sales as severely, and the second half of 2010 was much active.

Boeing to showcase its advanced Super Hornet fighter

US Defence major Boeing will unveil an advanced version of its F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter aircraft here at the biennial Aero India show starting Thursday. "We are going to display a mock up of the Super Hornet international roadmap aircraft at the air show," Boeing Defence, Space and Security India head Vivek Lall told PTI here.

The International Super Hornet Roadmap features futuristic enhancements made in the aircraft for international customers and would also allow them to specify their requirements to be equipped in their fighters.

The Super Hornet is in the race for supplying 126 Medium-Multirole Combat Aircraft (M-MRCA) to the Indian Air Force under a USD 11 billion deal expected to be signed by the end of this year.

The unveiling of the International Super Hornet Roadmap aircraft at the Aero India also signifies the importance attached to India by Boeing, Lall said.

The company has been developing the advanced aircraft for the last two years and has plans to provide a next-generation cockpit, a more powerful engine, missile laser warning systems, conformal fuel tanks and enclosed weapons pods.

Lall said the company has received a formal request from the Defence Ministry for procuring additional four P-8I long-range maritime surveillance aircraft.

India had placed an order worth USD 2.1 billion for procuring eight P-8Is from the company.

Lall said the company would be offering a derivative of the P-8I for the medium range reconnaissance aircraft requirements of the Indian Navy.

Boeing's heavy-lift Chinook helicopter and attack chopper Apache 64D are also in the race for bagging IAF deals.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and state's chief secretary SV Ranganath during a meeting with delegates of US India Business Council (USIBC) held here on the eve of Aero India show said business environment was conducive in Bangalore and the government plans to attract over $100 billion in next 10 years.

The state government has set up an aerospace park near Bengaluru International Airport, Yeddyurappa told the delegation.

"The city is already recognised as aerospace hub of the country and has more than 65% of the country's investment in the sector here. Besides big presence of public sector enterprises, many international private players have invested in aerospace sector in the state," Ranganath said.

He said a study conducted by Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries has brought out the fact that 90 per cent of the investors have expressed that they would like to reinvest in the state.

Leading the 10th Executive Aerospace and Defence Mission to Aero India 2011, Admiral US (Retd) Walter G Doran said aerospace companies in US were looking forward to invest in the state.

Air Marshal T J Master, member of joint aerospace task force, said besides technology innovation centre, an aerospace university was in the offing to cater the human resources for the aviation sector.

Defence technologies transferred to India not the best: Antony

India Monday said it had not benefited much from international cooperation in critical defence technologies in the field of aerospace and armaments, as the technology transferred to it was not the best.Inaugurating a three-day international seminar on aerospace technologies here ahead of the five-day AeroIndia show beginning Wednesday, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said it was important for India to have cooperation with military powers in the field of defence, but the transfer of technology offered by countries were not the latest.

'Don't expect any country in the world, however friendly it is, to part with most modern technology. That's the reality of the world,' Antony said, terming the technology transfers it had obtained from other nations as 'not being A-grade'.

India has been collaborating with countries like Russia, France, Israel and the US in obtaining weapons systems for its armed forces, including front-line Sukhoi SU-30 fighter jets, Scorpene submarines and the BrahMos cruise missile.

Antony cautioned India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India Inc, universities and other scientific institutions to jointly work towards maximising efforts in the field of defence technology and assured them of government's unstinted support so that the country need not depend on imports and borrowed technologies for its armed forces.

Though India produces its own equipment such as small arms, tanks and fighter jets, most of them are borrowed technologies, resulting in its defence imports touching about 70 percent of its needs.

However, the minister stressed that cooperation was absolutely necessary at all levels, be it local, national or global, for the nation's progress in defence technology.

Antony said India's indigenous fighter jet Tejas has to combine both technology and product development all at one go in view of technology denials at some stage or the other.

This was unlike in other parts of the world where technology development precedes product development, he noted

Despite odds, the DRDO and the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) handed over the aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in a reasonable time-frame, in comparison to other similar class of combat aircraft in the developed world, he added.

After incorporating all improvements that IAF wants, Tejas was expected to be made ready by HAL in all aspects including armament by the next edition of AeroIndia in 2013.

'Though Tejas has often been criticised for long delays, we have tried to make a world class aircraft. The world over, while technology development precedes product development, we attempted both at the same time in the case of LCA as we were denied technologies and had to find solutions the hard way,' Antony said.

Expressing satisfaction on the success of other products, namely the Akash missile system and unmanned aircraft Nishant, pilotless target aircraft Lakshya and varieties of airborne early warning systems, the defence minister said there was a lot more to be done to meet the needs of the armed forces.

Listing out the challenging roadmap of various aerospace programmes like the advanced medium combat aircraft, aerostats, unmanned combat aircraft, airborne early warning and control systems, medium altitude long range unmanned aircraft Rustom and the indigenous gas turbine engine Kaveri, Antony said it offered opportunities not only for all indigenous institutions and industries, but also for partners around the globe.

'We have chalked out an ambitious roadmap to develop many challenging aerospace programmes to meet the needs of our armed forces,' he added.

Exhorting the state-run defence units to improve quality and pace of interactions with the armed forces, Antony said the need of the hour was to enhance the percentage of indigenous systems for meeting their requirements and security concerns.

'Though the roadmap provides immense opportunities for the defence research and development establishments and the private industry, greater indigenisation and self-reliance are essential as no country, however friendly, will part with its critical technologies for strategic reasons,' he told about 800 delegates.

Minister of State for Defence Production M.M. Pallam Raju, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister V.K. Saraswat and DRDO Chief Controller for R&D Projects Prahlada also spoke on the occasion.

Aero India is jewel in Asian crown: US

The United States (US) will be the largest participant at the Aero Show 2011, with more than 200 official and business delegates.

A high-level delegation led by secretary of commerce Gary Locke and US ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer, will be attending the air show where that country is exhibiting a broad cross-section of military aircraft and equipment through static displays and aerial demonstrations.

"The Aero India is one of the jewels of Asia. The US government's high-level participation at the Aero India this year is an indication of the growing defence relationship between US and India and a sign of India's growing prominence on the world stage. Aero India is the most recent manifestation of the increasing significant partnership that includes joint military exercise, regional security initiatives and a flourishing military sales relationship," Roemer said.

He said that removing the nine Defence Research and Development Organisation and Indian Space Research Organisation laboratories and centres from the entities list following US president Barack Obama's recent India visit, is further proof to the US' commitment to be India's strategic partner.

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft, Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules transport aircraft, Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuelling aircraft, Lockheed Martin F-16 Super Viper and Boeing F/1 Super Hornet are among the aircraft which will be participating in the five-day air show starting on Wednesday.

Roemer also said that the US is keen to participate in India's programmes by developing infrastructure at future and existing airports across the country.

He said that the US would like to participate with India in developing civilian aircraft, helicopters and corporate jets.
India and the US are also looking to sign the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA) which will lead to mutual acceptance of aeronautical products and parts developed in either country.

BRAHMOS full-scale missile with Su-30 MKI on display at Aero India

The air launched version of BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system integrated with Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter aircraft on display is a major attraction at Aero India 2011.

The air launched version has lesser weight and additional rear fins for aerodynamic stability during separation from the aircraft and launch.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has chosen the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft as the launch platform for the BRAHMOS missile.

Some exclusive modifications are being made in the aircraft to use it as a platform for launching the missile. The test of air-launched version of BRAHMOS is expected to take place in 2012, BrahMos Aerospace Chief A Sivathanu Pillai has said.

BRAHMOS cruise missile can be launched from aircraft, ships, submarine and land.

The cruise missile has flight range of up to 290-km with supersonic speed all through the flight, leading to shorter flight time, consequently ensuring lower dispersion of targets, quicker engagement time and non-interception by any known weapon system in the world.

AERO INDIA: Eurofighter reveals offer to produce navalised Typhoon

:D

09/02/11

The Eurofighter consortium is offering India the opportunity to acquire a new version of its Typhoon for use from a future indigenous aircraft carrier, with the first firm details of the proposal having emerged at the show.

One of six contenders battling for the Indian air force's 126-aircraft medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) deal, Eurofighter is here touting the potential of a navalised development which has already been studied in detail in the UK.

"If Typhoon wins MMRCA then India will have the indigenous skills to develop a navalised version," says Paul Hopkins, BAE Systems' vice-president business development (air) India. "This is a perfect opportunity for the nation to add aircraft with both land and sea capabilities."

Being shown in model form for the first time this week, the European type would receive several new features to support its proposed life at sea. These include a new, stronger landing gear, a modified arrestor hook and thrust-vectoring control nozzles for its two Eurojet EJ200 turbofan engines. The latter would enable the fighter to approach the vessel at a reduced speed without restricting pilot vision by requiring an increased angle of attack.

Eurofighter says only localised strengthening would be required on some fuselage sections near the landing gear, and to the EJ200. Conformal fuel tanks could also be integrated with the airframe to extend the strike aircraft's range.

Video footage being shown in the Eurofighter and BAE exhibit areas includes recent simulation-based imagery of tests made using adapted flight control software and new engine modelling. Sporting Indian navy markings, the navalised Typhoon is depicted taking off from a deck space similar to that aboard the ex-Russian navy aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, which is now being modified for Indian use.

Also of interest for Indian applications is a new weapons option being displayed for the first time with a full-scale model of the Typhoon. Working in conjunction with Saab and Diehl, Eurofighter is offering the RBS15 anti-ship missile as a future payload for the multi-role fighter.

The company is also showcasing technologies including an active electronically scanned array radar offered for the Typhoon, and providing demonstrations with a BAE-developed smart helmet display system for the type.
