A Decade in Indian Defence : 2000-2010​

Friends, in a few days we are going to cross over in another decade , starting with 1 st January, 2011. The Defence research also became older of 10 years. In this regard may we look behind what India was able to achieve to defend her territories.

This may also be stated that the above mentioned thread herein will discuss in details about major developments in India's Defence, the milestones the country have crossed, on and from 2000 to 2010, what we need to do, and what are /were achieved , what are waiting to be achieved. The failures , all will be upto thought full discussion alongwith backing up with evidence , analysis.

As we all know, the DFI HQ is known for quality discussion , all the posts will be subject to approval of Moderators and Admins. We do here make request to our respected members :

Please avoid flaming of bashing any other country.

Comparison/s of Defence System/s with existing systems of any other country is/are welcomed while in Discussion , but please do not make the thread a 'comparison only' one.

Wow, first time I have seen Arihant. Reminds me of a Han class SSN. Doesn't look like there is too much room for VL missiles as the hull is rather steep. Not seeing many torpedo tubes.

Indian Army Embraces Digital Technology ------

Keeping pace with global defence establishments, the Indian Army is also embracing digital technology.

As is known, security forces rely on radio communication for coordination and operations. They currently operate with high frequency, very high frequency and ultra-high frequency for voice communications. However, with advancing technology and rapid improvements in digitization, data transfer rates, modulation, and the traditional radio sets are becoming obsolete, and are being replaced with IP radios.

The Indian Army is scouting IP radio for providing end-to-end radio communication on IP technology. Each IP radio, which will function as a relay within a network, will enable multi-point connectivity in the digitized battlefield.

For security reasons, the radio will have built-in SAG-approved secrecy. The secrecy algorithm will not be ported ex-factory and the same will be ported by user at his premises. The programming of crypto keys and frequency-hopping parameters will be manned by computers.

Indian Army conducts exercise 'Hind Shakti'

Chandigarh (PTI) The Indian Army's 'Hind Shakti' exercise aimed at conducting an offensive task in developed terrain by its premier strike corps concluded here on Tuesday.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Deepak Kapoor and GOC-in-C Western Command Lt Gen T.K. Sapru on Monday attended the three-day-long manoeuver, which was performed by the Kharga Corps near Barnala and Jagraon in the Punjab plains, a defence spokesman said.

The Army chief expressed satisfaction over the operation preparedness and commended the event as another step in the Army's continued endeavour to fine tune its proactive strategy.

1 in 3 hand grenades is a dud: Defence survey


NAGPUR: Imagine a scenario in which an Indian soldier's life and the life of his mates depends on a grenade � may be the last one with the jawan �
to stop an advancing enemy. He takes the pin out and lobs it. But, instead of hearing an explosion, the jawans are met with a hail of bullets.

Unthinkable? Think again. A recent official survey of weaponry being used by soldiers guarding our borders reveals that about 30% of hand-grenades used by jawans don't explode � which means an alarming one in three is a dud. The survey, carried out by weapons experts from the Army and defence organisations, is based on interviews with jawans posted in border areas.

Army tanks battle night-blindness


A majority of Army tanks continue to grope in the dark, stricken as they are with an acute case of night blindness, in yet another
example of the Indian defence establishment's sheer inability to take timely decisions in tune with strategic concerns.

Army's long-standing objective to equip its mechanized forces, including the over 1,600 T-72 tanks which form the backbone of the country's armoured might, with advanced night-fighting capabilities is still a long distance away from fruition, say sources. For instance, Army's case for acquiring 700 TISAS (thermal imaging stand alone systems) and 418 TIFACS (thermal fire control systems) for its T-72 fleet at a cost of around Rs 1,150 crore is still hanging fire at the commercial negotiations stage.

Not battle-ready before 2027, admits Indian Army

The Indian Army, one of the world's largest, has admitted it is far from being battle-ready. The force is 50 per cent short of attaining full capability.

The admission is part of the army's internal assessment report submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence. Headlines Today has exclusive access to the report.

The report says it will take around 20 years for the army to gain full defence preparedness. The infantry, artillery and the armoury would be fully ready for battle only by 2027. This means that in the event of a war in the next two decades, the country may prove to be a virtual sitting duck.

Going by the report, the force seems most vulnerable as far as combat helicopters are concerned. The report says the army has attained an abysmal 17 per cent capability in combat choppers. Full combat capability by helicopters would not be possible before 2027.

Now, Army wants to dump the indigenous INSAS rifle

New Delhi: Yet another move by the Indian Army to dump indigenous equipment has come under sharp focus within the services and outside. The decision to look for a foreign replacement for the Indian small arms system (Insas) assault rifle — the standard rifle of an Indian soldier — came as the army is under attack from various quarters for its resistance to the Arjun tank.

The Insas and Arjun are indigenously made, and are among rare successes for India, which is heavily dependent on foreign firms for defence equipment.

The army wants to dump the Insas as it allegedly doesn't measure up to its requirements. One of the arguments is that it does not instantly kill the enemy. But its defenders pointed out that it was not supposed to kill the enemy, but injure him so that in a battlefield more of his fellow soldiers are busy evacuating the injured.
