ALH ( Advance Light Helicopter ) Dhruv which comes under 5ton catagory and more powerful than any LUH ..
Yeah, but you have no ALH unless we regear Shakti. Why should we if they are going to screw with LUH.

poor pilots of IAF in siachen and leh .:sad:
its all about, whether India would let all these continue or there would be a resistance for these things. they do have production line of Dhruv which may also do the work, more or less. similarly how China also doesn't have very high tech copters, while Russian high tech arms are always on offer for India........

India can't ignore long term benefits, and for that we do need to prepare ourselves to compromise the short term benefits. proper actions need to be taken against its supplier to make them an example for all those who are willing to sell arms in India. if India wants its coming arm deals to happen properly, they need to establish few examples for the next arm deals and this is a good opportunity :thumb:

ALH doesn't exist without Turbomeca regearing Shakti. I hope they realise that or they are going without light helicopters for a loooong time.

In Siachen, Dhruv proves a world-beater

Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) shuddered towards the icy helipad on a 21,000-foot ledge overlooking the Siachen Glacier, the pilots could see wreckage from earlier helicopter crashes dotting the base of the vertical ice walls on either side. Ahead lay the Indian army's infamous Sonam Post, the highest inhabited spot on earth, and an extreme example of why the military so urgently wants the Dhruv, which has been customised by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for high altitude operations. Very quickly, the Dhruv demonstrated its superiority over the military's tiny, single-engine Cheetah helicopters, which can barely lift 20 kilos of payload to Sonam. The army wanted the Dhruv to lift 200 kilos to Sonam; we managed to carry 600 kilos.

Powering that world-beating performance is a new helicopter engine, called the Shakti, which HAL commissioned French engine-maker, Turbomeca, to design for operations along India's high-altitude borders. It is this engine that makes the new Dhruv Mark III --- the first five of which were delivered to the army this month --- far superior to the Mark I and Mark II Dhruvs,The Shakti-powered Dhruv Mark III is changing the operational dynamics on India's high-altitude Himalayan defences. The capability to airlift soldiers will allow far-flung posts to be manned with fewer soldiers. In a crisis, jawans can be airlifted quickly from lower altitudes to threatened areas, and casualties can be evacuated. And when they see a Dhruv flying in, the soldiers on isolated piquets like Sonam know that there is space on board for essential stores, and even occasional goodies from families and comrades.

Siachin is a very small part of the border and all helicopter need not be twin engined powerfull machines to climb heights of 20,000 with useful weight.

The machines required are as per envisaged missions and not all for Siachin !

The whole controversey of Westland VVIP helicopter is based on that and I agree that all helicopter need not climb Siachin for a President who will go there once in his / her tenure. The hellicopter, instead should be safe and capable for those conditions where he / she will travel 80 per cent of the time.

Same is the case of Dhruv which is a big, costly in price and maintainance machine for recce, observation, fire control and light duties.. We have enough Dhruv for Siachin and othet hogher heights.

But in order to carry out the required missions in plains , deserts, mountains and jungles dhruv is uneconomical and not suitable.

Just because of HAL it should not be thrust upon..

If one helicopter was sufficient to carry out all tasks people the world over were not fools to make so many varieties of hellicopters..

The concept of ULH is obsolete, Army itself replacing Cheatak and even Cheetha by Dhruvs, Army using this platform for Recce, Recently fire-support platform, Recuse & Ambulance , Special forces ops, Logistic necessity, In desert, Jungle and even in Snow so does over water, That is good enough for an Indication of how useful it is Army think, Besides its logical in sense of logistics of spares..

ULH foreign purchase is mainly for Siachin as told and it does not even capable to preform there, This all smell fishy ;) ..

How can the concept of LUH be obsolete? Dhruv is a medium helo and quite expensive in lifecycle cost. Twice the cost of Fennec. I guess India is made out of money? Oh wait, they are cutting the defence budget.

How can the concept of Single Engine be obsolete? Rafale is a medium Aircraft and quite expensive in lifecycle cost. twice the cost of Gripen. I guess India is made out of money? Oh wait, they are cutting the defense budget.

That is because of TINA factor and not that Dhruv as a bird is made for all the missions...

What is the point in using a helicopter for reccee which can carry six troops and is a larger bird guzzling fuel all the way !

Since Dhruv can't fly at an altitude beyond 4500m and is a bit heavier than the 1950kg Kamov Ka 226T, can it be a good solution for LUH?

It was a brutal test of helicopter and pilot. As the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter shuddered towards the icy helipad on a 21,000-foot ledge overlooking the Siachen Glacier, the pilots could see wreckage from earlier helicopter crashes dotting the base of the vertical ice walls on either side.

Dhruv can lift 600kg to an altitude of 6400m (Sonam)

Personally I support the idea of Dhruv replacing ULH but just being the devil's vakil to clear sum doubts.

But Army requires a chopper that can fly at 23000 ft? Doesn't it?

Why don't we also develop a NMRH variant of Dhruv with larger, stronger airframe, folding rotorblades ,etc. instead of wasting our foreign exchange reserves?
