NEW DELHI: To smoke out enemy troops fortified inside concrete shelters, the Indian Air Force is looking to procure bunker-buster laser-guided bombs (LGBs) from global vendors.

The IAF plans to induct more than 100 bunker-buster LGBs that will be equipped on its fighter aircraft fleet to destroy strongly fortified enemy targets, sources told PTI here.

They said the IAF had issued a global Request for Proposal (RFP) for the purpose earlier this year, and defence majors including American Lockheed Martin and Raytheon along with an Israeli missile manufacturer have submitted their bids for the tender.

"We recently submitted bid in response to the RFP for LGBs," Lockheed Martin India head Roger Rose said, confirming the participation of his company in the race.

The two American companies are offering their respective versions of the Paveway LGBs manufactured by them separately.

With their capability to pierce hard surfaces, the bombs can also be used to destroy enemy's concrete runways and fortified locations.

LGBs are guided projectiles that use lasers to strike a designated target with greater accuracy than a gravity bomb and were used with high accuracy by the IAF against Pakistani Army posts during the Kargil war in 1999.

Around the same time, the US had supplied some Paveway bombs to India which could be launched from the Jaguar and Mirage 200 jets for accurately striking enemy targets.

US is more concerned with putting its war economy back in place than stroke some Cold War era ego. Bunker busters of different category might be the call as we already got Sudarshan 1,000 lb one. But with this government in place, even if we made the Death Star as our national weapon, it would be useless.

US made Paveways were also used in the kargill war against targets on tiger hill and other areas. But why only 100? We should be ordering 1000s since both China and Pak have thousands of heavly fortified targets.

A 100 Bunker buster would be just fine, we dont need more than that. We just need limited LGBs has a precaution, Just to be prepared for another Kargil War.

What India needs are some few JDAMs. Even Pakistan has JDAMs and are planning to fit them on their Jf-17s

really after buying 800 spice kits why would you need JDAMs
spice is far superior in range accuracy and independence off GPS ( backup optical sensor )

Variant of Popeye Turbo! Nah! Nirbhay is not developed yet and as indications goes it is rather inspired of Storm Shadow specs.

definitely, I agree. What we really need is in house production of JDAM based weapon systems.

And they wasted our resources and efforts in 5 puny nuclear tests rather than use the money to modernize the conventional forces. Their false bravado of nuclear tests led to sanctions and problems for India. If they had modernized the Army, Navy and Air Force and THEN gone on to do some really useful nuke tests, it would have made sense. To me personally it was a premature show of strength that led to nowhere.

Bunker Busters are not mere LGB or JDAM, they penetrate through the hardened shelter of the enemy defence or the bunker before exploding. Yes bunker buster should be in the shopping list, till recipe is not available.
