im sure all of you would be over joyous and fall head over heals. this is crystal clear...if you want India to become a powerful country then this base is bad news for India. If you want India to become a lackey and lick the ass of the west then obviously this base is good news for India.

Powerful or potentially powerful countries defend themselves against other countries and dont ask another country to defend it. Quite cleary from the posts in this thread it is obvious that most of you dont think India can defend themselves thus are falling head over heals for another country. If that is the case then remember dont you dare bash pakistan because we aren't any better.

Just to clarify again, no one AFAIK is saying that we should outsource our security to the US. Nor is anyone asking that the US should setup a naval base in BD. I for one don't think it is either necessary or in Indian interests if the US does plan to set up a permanant naval base like Diego Garcia in BD. My point is merely that this report is just fabricated. In BD itself, it would be politically unsustainable to have a naval base in BD which is something that can't be hidden.

At the same time, we have to recognise that the US is still the most powerful country in the world and atleast for now and due to geopolitical reasons (not wishy washy reasons like Indian diaspora,culture and democracy) is not hostile to us. Lets be clearheaded ofcourse that the US has been hostile in the past particularly durign the cold war era and it may happen again in the future. So for example not agreeing to the LSA agreement that provides mutual basing and refueling rights to Indian US armed forces is something that was right given that the US would have found it more beneficial than India. And it would unnecessarily alienate the Russians and the Chinese without India getting any major benefit out of the deal.

Remember, war and active hostitilities is something that should be avoided particularly with respect to China. But at the same time a credible military deterrent or "a big stick" is necessary to keep Chinese adventurism in check. We have to look at the reality that India can't match dollar for dollar in defence spending with China as of now and make judicious use of its partnerships around the world and the US is one of the important ones.

At present the US WANTS to help India integrate the South Asia region and minimise Chinese influence. This coincidies with Indian interests and should be taken advantage of. And mil to mil ties is one such aspect of integration between India and BD aided possibly by the US. There is nothing wrong in that.

Currently the 7th fleet is based mainly in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Guam and recently activated a base in Australia. If I would hazard a guess then any new bases would be around the South China Sea region which means bases in Phillipines and possibly Vietnam.

assuming the news to be true, implications for India, China and Burma. We too can keep tab on their ships, they can moniter our missile test, coco is also close by. Plus location is not good for 7th fleet, they have to move from bay of bangal, every time, since only three countries in the region.

Bay of Bengal is a very large lake dominated in the West by India, North by BD and Eastern side by Myanmar. The southern entry by A&N islands. American presence in Chittagong means that BD and Myanmar bases in Bay of Bengal would be denied to the Chinese and Bay of Bengal would be a safe operating lake for USN including carrier battle groups and their Subs with ICBM. No swarm tactics and use of merchant vessels to push out the US ships could be uses by the Chinese. Any retaliation by the Chinese on US ships in Bay of Bengal would be difficult as Bay of Bengal is not Chinese lake. There can not be any logic hitting on US ships in Bay of Bengal but their presence there would be constant threat to the Chinese.

This is a good way of threatening China without going to a place which they claim to be their backyard ! US presence in South China Sea would be a big propaganda material. The same can not be said about US presence in Bay of Bengal.

If it happens it is good move by the USA.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are already have enough influence, even if they do not have a base at India Gate.

The Soviets had it earlier and now it should be the turn of the US.
