Choosing 5 movies from such a huge category is very very difficult !! I rather categorize my favorites based on particular wars:

WW 2:

1) The Bridge on the River Kwai
2) The Guns of Navarone
3) Schindler's List
4) The Thin Red Line
5) Saving Private Ryan

Vietnam War:

1) Platoon
2) Flight of the Intruder
3) First Blood 2
4) Full Metal Jacket
5) We were Soldiers

More Recent war films:

1) Black Hawk Down
2) Navy Seals
3) The Hurt Locker
4) Tears of the Sun
5) The Delta Force

No Man's Land
It does not have grand battle scenes like saving Private Ryan but it sure is a no nonsense movie that gets the message across, must watch in my view.
Also it deservingly got the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002 (Beating our own Lagaan)

Enemy At the Gates

Its a gripping story about 2 snipers on a fight to the death. The depiction of the city of Stalingrad during the battle was just awe inspiring. Definately the best WW2 movie that I have seen. Its also interesting to see WW2 from a non-US perspective.

Surely, this is an awesome movie, mate !!! Awesome sniping duel between Jude Law as a Soviet sniper and Ed Harris as the German major !! But I think it pales in comparison to the movies listed by me, that's my view, mate.

LONDON: Steven Spielberg's multiple Oscar winning film 'Saving Private Ryan´ has been named the best war film of all time in a poll of movie fans.

Saving Private Ryan´, a 1998 film starring Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, garnered 21% of the vote, Telegraph online reported.

The survey was conducted by online DVD and games rental service Lovefilm on more than 3,000 of its members, to mark the cinema release of Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds´.

'The Great Escape´, featuring Steve McQueen as the Cooler King, took 11% of the vote. It pipped another Spielberg-directed film, 'Schindler's List´ to second spot.

Francis Ford Coppola's 'Apocalypse Now´, set in Vietnam but based on Josef Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, came fourth with nine per cent of the votes.

The Vietnam War was also the backdrop for Stanley Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket´ and Oliver Stone's 'Platoon´, which came fifth and sixth respectively, as well as Michael Cimino's 'The Deer Hunter´ which grabbed the tenth position.

'Braveheart´, starring Hollywood superstar Mel Gibson as the Scottish hero William Wallace, claimed seventh spot while modern day war movie 'Black Hawk Down´ came eighth.

Wolfgang Peterson's German U-Boat drama 'Das Boot´ was the only non English language film to make it in to the list on the ninth spot.

Thanks a great choice! You have good taste. I already picked my 5, so can't include it. It would have competed with Black Hawk Down in my perspective.
