India’s increasing defence capabilities and its ability to provide security in the region are good for the United States, said Thomas Vajda, Consul General of United States in Mumbai, who is on a two-day visit to Gujarat.
“We are working with India to help develop the next generation aircraft carrier technology and jet engine technology. I am not aware of any example where we have made such a strategic commitment to build up indigenous defence capabilities of another country. And we do that because we recognise that we and India share such close values and interest,” Vajda told mediapersons at the new office of the Indo-American Education Society in the city on Thursday.
Asked if India and the US can together find an amicable solution to the disputes caused by China in the South China Sea, Vajda said, “Our relationship with India stands on its own merits. We are not seeking closer relations with India in response to what any other country is doing. We both have deep-seated interest to work more closely.”
The US official said that as long as countries subscribe to a rule-based border — whether it is a maritime domain or areas of trade and commerce — the outcome can be economic prosperity, growth and improved stability in South China Sea region. “That is what we aspire to and we know that India, too, shares the same vision,” Vajda added.
Asked about his opinion on the reforms initiated by the Modi government, the US Consul General picked GST, bankruptcy law and single-window clearances for customs as some of the good examples.
“American companies find that they have much better access to senior officials in state governments. This is really important because for big investments you need government support,” Vajda said.
