Lol Sputnik. I thought in the Past we put all out eggs in the Russkie basket and are now paying a dear price by being blackmailed over the equipment we bought from them.
Like it or not, we need to slowly shift all the eggs into one basket:
The India basket.

The India basket.
that means alot of things and nothing at the same time.

For the past 10-15 years we have slowly built up this Indian Basket (working with Russia, America, Europe, Israel, Japan, Austrialia, Singapore, etc etc) on the Geopolitical front. But when it comes to key action points we have still been operating in Isolation while China has been hard at work buying alliances in Myanmar, SriLanka, Pakistan, Maldives, Africa, Afghanistan and Central Asia. Its bullying lesser Countries in Asia to bow down to Pax China.

So what do you envision for an Indian Basket?

Er............by "India basket" I meant >90% weapons demands being met with Indigenous defence equipment.

BTW, China cannot buy alliances. Alliances are never sealed with a one-time investment. They might have influence over these countries, but alliances are seldom formed like this.

Well said about alliances. In fact, China doesn't even want alliances. They have an age old system known as 'tributes', whereby the tributary state keeps giving tributes/taxes to China, in exchange for good relations. China loathes the kind of alliances with US makes, because they are costly and difficult to manage. I think both are flawed. India does it best. Even though I know it has become fashionable to criticize anything Indian, but it is true. We spend exponentially less than the US in Afghanistan but look at the kind of approval ratings we have.

About the indigenous equipment, there will NEVER be a 100% indigenous target because it has never been that way anywhere around the world. Even during the time of swords and sticks, people would import steel and sword making know-how from others in order to give themselves an edge over their enemies. Even Marathas used to buy cannon guns from French to get an advantage over British. In fact, the French have played spoilsport throughout history wherever the British went, the French would go with a counter-offer. Even the Rafale offer is a middle finger to the Eurofighter in a similar fashion.

It's not just India, every country buys stuff from other nations. Russia purchased drones from Israel at the peak of Syria and Israel even sold it to them despite the US alliance. Israel bought submarines from Germany and Germany bought drones from Israel. Now, do any people from these countries sit and cry that they are losing self respect because of these sales? you have a pressing need, someone else has invested time and energy to research the technology and mass production capacity, then buy it. Nothing wrong in it. Britain opposes us in the Kashmir issue but BAE systems still sells M777 and collaborating with us for infantry vehicle.

The silver lining is that our troops get the best equipment and our desi ordnance companies get a strong message that they cannot take Army sales for granted. If they cannot be globally competitive then they will lose.

NEXT STEP : India should set up small factories to manufacture small arms and light arty ammo within Afghanistan itself. It's much easier to manufacture locally in bulk and supply to the ANI, than making it in India and sending via ship. It doesn't have to be large arty shells or multibarrel rocket systems. Just Indian field arty and 5.56 bullets.

Err yes you can.

Nigeria
Kenya
Maldives
Sri Lanka
Nepal
Bangladesh
Venezuela
Cuba
Horn of Africa
Pakistan

Countless others..

We dissmiss them as short term and hence short sighted. The Chinese see them as a means to an end and a stepping block to something else. Shortterm for them is irrelevant.

Lol Fairenough. but we needed to start yesterday. Today is almost pasing away. We today are low tech manufacturing country. We have many a mile to go before we can compete in the Global Military Industrial Complex and fullfill our Security needs. Unfortunately our policy makers are harping on Make in India not Made in India. And hence our woes will continue.

India planning to send 15,000 troops to Afghanistan

Diplomatic reports reaching here say that the Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is planning to rush to Afghanistan in an attempt to cash on the latest wave of terrorist attacks and make an official offer of sending Indian troops to defend Afghan Government leaders.
A reliable report also claimed that Mr. Ajit Doval had recently met with Afghan National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar in Russia a few days earlier and had asked Afghan government to deliver an official invitation to the Indian Government to dispatch Indian troops.
Reports reaching here from Kabul say that Afghanistan’s pro-Indian lobby had been trying to exploit the blast for its own gains and objectives and has increased anti-Pakistan propaganda despite the fact that Pakistanis had also become victims of Kabul blast.
Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid has strongly denied any involvement in the attack and said that Taliban leadership had issued instructions against targeting any civilian or civilian facilities. Afghan Talibans says it could be a conspiracy to pave the way for more foreign troops in Afghanistan.
Despite strong condemnation from Pakistan the pro-India Afghan leaders and lobbies including former Afghan intelligence chief Saleh Amrullah have started a campaign against Pakistan. On May 28, 2017, just two day before the Wednesday Kabul attack the Afghan Pajhwok news agency had reported that India could send its troops to Afghanistan under “UN mission”. The Pajhwok dispatch from Washington which was published in the Outlook Afghanistan had quoted a “prominent Indian defense expert” told a Washington audience on May 18, 2017 that “New Delhi could perhaps be persuaded to send up to a division of Indian troops – around 15,000 — to Afghanistan under a United Nations Peacekeeping mission.”
“If invited, if there is a UN peacekeeping force … it is my considered view that perhaps India could be persuaded to send up to a division, provided the logistics are in place, provided Pakistan’s so-called sensibilities can be put in place,” Brig® Gurmeet Kanwal, from the Institute for Defense Studies and Analysis was quoted as telling audience in a close-door round table at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Gurmeet Kanwal, who is known for his close links with Indian military establishment visited Washington DC and tried to convince President Donald Trump Administration to allocate India an official role in Afghanistan.

This was reported by the Pak Observer. I doubt Doval would want to send 15,000 troops to Afghanistan. I suspect this is a Pakistani disinformation campaign. I can understand if Modi sends 1,000 counter-terror specialists and infiltrators as well as trainers to Afghanistan but certainly not 15,000 Indian army troops.

The report is completly BS..

BUT

well if India does go there - the article already points to a minimum Mission Statement - i.e Protect Govt Institutions. Very easy to pull out when and if we want to ..

AND

A brigade backed by Transports + 2x Squadron of Attach Helos + 1/2 Squadrons of Mig-29s and other SIGINT Planes would make pakistan shiite its pants.
