5 hours is good but not enough for Indian air space
anyway it already has a refueling probe

blackwater@dont want to mention saab 2000 Erieye here

but a simple answer to your question is the saab endurance as per there official site is 9.5hrs and this is more than enough for Pakistan airspace

5 hours is plenty. It is 7.5 hours for Phalcon. Mid air refueling doubles it anyway.

What we need is numbers. Current plans are for 5 Phalcons, 4 from AWACS-India project(initial numbers) and one or two dozen DRDO-CABS AEW&C.

Not bad the radar seems pretty good 300+ km for fighter aircraft's is a good enough start. Though the coverage needs to be improved from 240 to 360 degree. I guess the AWACS India project is where they plan to implement it.

240 degrees is good enough. It will be a little better eventually, but won't reach 360degrees.

AWACS-India is for large body aircraft, at the level of a IL-76. It will be the Indian equivalent of the Phalcon.

India to soon fly home-grown surveillance radar

India to soon fly home-grown surveillance radar - India News - IBNLive

Bangalore: India will soon join the elite group of countries by flying its own airborne radar for surveillance to detect enemy fighters and cruise missiles, as also track troop build-up on the ground.

"We will start flying the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&CS) soon after its integration with the Brazilian Embraer jet for trials and induction in our fleet by April 2014," Chief of Air Staff NAK Browne told reporters here Thursday.

The IAF plans to locate the first surveillance radar aircraft somewhere on the western border after its operationalisation.

To strengthen its surveillance system for operational requirements, the IAF has tied up with the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 2007 to induct indigenously built airborne radars atop three modified Embraer regional jets at a cost of Rs 2,157 crore ($399 million).

Designed and developed by the city-based Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) of DRDO to detect enemy aircraft, battle ships and terrain vehicles at long ranges, the airborne radar has an active electronically scanned array (AESA) atop the customised EMG-145 fuselage and about 60 antennae and sensors over its 4.5-tonne airframe.

"For the first time, the aircraft has air-to-air refueling system to extend its flying hours (time-on-station). The cabin has been reconfigured to have five operator work stations, four equipment racks, additional fuselage fuel tanks and five rest crew seats," CABS director and AEW&C programme director S Christopher said on the occasion of handing over the aircraft to the IAF.

Noting that the radar system was a complex project, Browne said the programme was part of IAF's long-term vision to indigenise its operational requirements and a starting point for more complex surveillance platforms.

"We will use the AEW&C system along with the (Israeli-built) Phalcon Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) platform with the AESA mounted atop the IL-76 (Russian built Illyushin) to enhance our air warfare," Browne asserted.

The IAF has bought three Phalcon AWACS on IL-76 for $1.1 billion under a tripartite agreement with Israel and Russia in 2004.
Embraer will deliver the second aircraft to IAF in December and the third in 2013 after full certification and testing.

"In the long-term, we will have 15 aircraft with surveillance radars, including five on AWACS India platform to meet the security needs of our large country whose interests extend beyond borders to Car Nicobar islands," Browne observed.

DRDO director-general (R&D) VK Saraswat said the AEW&C system would put India into the elite group, which can develop and deliver such a complex surveillance platform.

"The world is watching this radar with bated breath as its development will benefit Embraer and DRDO to collaborate for producing a cost-effective and formidable force multipliers in the global market," Saraswat, who is also scientific adviser to defence minister (AK Antony) said on the occasion.

Pakistan needed the eyerie because the Phalcon (which can look into kabul airspace) scared them. The chinese awacs are technologically inferior to eyerie and couldn't be data linked to F-16 or Mirage-III's.

i guess pakistan made the biggest mistake by selecting Erieye

we should have rather waited for zdk03(as per paf officials the range is higher than Erieye,360 degree coverage(not continuesly),joint venture and we might even manufacture them locally in future in the underconstruction Nescom electronic complex which is said to have infra for locally manufacturing t/r module for radar ofcourse under China patents)

4 saab on order in 2007 while only 3 received so far

deal for joint development of a platform based on kj200 platform was inked in 2006
our engineers were involved in the project for Atleast 5 years so Atleast they might have learnt alot

so zdk03 choice was alot better
developed as per paf requirements
our engineers were involved in the project as well
was a joint venture
fast delivery
better range
360 degree coverage
the improved y8 is better than saab 2000

a total 8 awacs are confirmed
May be they will order more After delivery of the total 8

The Phalcons will happen the fastest, no problems there. AWACS-India is heavily dependent on the platform to be identified quickly. It may be a Boeing, Airbus or the new IL-476 that Russia is currently building.

So, AWACS-India is more of a 2020-25 project while the large number of DRDO CABS aircraft orders will be fulfilled over 10-15 years.

Anyway, all of this is apart from the P-8I which will have an air search function in the radar too, in order to act as AWACS with 360degree capability. You can say the USN P-8A will be inferior to the P-8I. Add another 12 aircraft here.

PS: The ZDK-03 does not come with AESA. It is a PESA though, something on the lines of E-2C Hawkeye. But this is for a different thread. How about starting one for ZDK-03 with whatever information you already have?

They plan 5-8 AWACS (Phalcon + AWACs India) and 12-16 AEW like the one from CABS-EMBRAER. Given Indian borders it makes sense to have them. The ZDK03 is nowehere as good as Eyerie even (except in range). It was bought because the swedes would not let it data link with the chinese fighters.

I wonder if USA will allow datalinking to F-16's?? highly doubtful.

NATO shares a common data link LINK-16 I think. The eyrie is for Mirage-iii/f-16's while the chinese plane can only data link to F-7/JF-17 etc.

Prying plane begins shakedown flight trials

Bangalore: The Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platform, India's recently-acquired eye-in-the-sky aircraft, had its first flight loaded with desi mission systems on September 29. Defence sources term the flight as shakedown trials, carrying electronic warfare (EW) systems developed by Bangalore-based Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS).

Built on a modified Embraer platform (EMB-145I), the prying plane had arrived in Bangalore (from Brazil) on August 22. "The aircraft has been integrated with mission system avionics racks populated with line replacement units (LRUs). The internal layout of the aircraft has been modified as it is integrated with the operator work stations and operator chairs as per the final AEW&C configuration. The initial shakedown flights are vital for the AEW&C programme," sources told Express.

External changes too have been carried out on the aircraft to replace the dummy electronics with actual final functional units. "We have got the flight clearance for initial trials with our systems from the Center for Military Airworthiness Certification, after a thorough inspection. The shakedown sorties aim to ascertain the compliance of structural installation of mission systems," sources said.

The aircraft was flown by pilots from Indian Air Force's (IAF) Aircraft Systems and Testing Establishment (ASTE). "A test team comprising of senior scientists from CABS and flight test Engineers, flew in the aircraft to carry out the experiments," sources said. The developmental flight tests of AEW&C is expected to commence from January 2013, after exhaustive ground tests. The next aircraft is expected from to arrive in India by December 2012.
An ASTE official said that the AEW&C will be the star attraction during this year's Air Force Day parade on October 8, at the Hindon air base. "We are planning to ferry the aircraft to Delhi on October 3 with all installed mission systems. The aircraft will be on a public display for the first time," the official said.

India takes up AWACS programme, can penetrate enemy territory

BANGALORE (PTI): India has just taken up development of the Rs 6,000 crore Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) that will have the capability to penetrate "longer distances" enemy territory by way of radars and electronic warfare systems without venturing into the region physically, a top defence official said Friday.

Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister, Secretary in the Department of Defence (R&D) and Director General of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) V K Saraswat said DRDO just started the programme, after clearance from the Government recently.

Asked how it's different from the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system, he said: "AWACS is a heavier and high endurance system, which can give you in terms of coverage about 360 degrees as against AEW&C which is about 270 degree coverage".

In addition, (compared to AEW&C) AWACS flies at a higher altitude and it can penetrate into the enemy territory -- not physically -- (but) by way of radars and EW (electronic warfare) systems to longer distances and it can be in sky for larger durations, besides giving better visibility.

"Both have a role. All over the world, people have AEW&C and AWACS in a tandem mode because each one does its role and that's what our country is also doing", Saraswat said.

He said two AEW&C aircraft would be ready this year, adding, "By 2014, we will complete delivery of all the three aircraft (AEW&C) to Indian Air Force".

Meanwhile, Saraswat also said that the DRDO has conducted a flight of "guided bomb". "It's a bomb which can fly for about 40-50 or even more kilometres in a guided mode and it can be released from an aircraft".

He said the guided bomb is a totally indigenous effort, from designing, development and realisation including explosive content in them, as also guidance and control.

I believe the title of the thread should be now changed to India's AEW&CS and AWACS systems
