European manufacturer signs up to make missiles in India with BDL
MoU signed for assembly, integration of Air to Air Asraam missile and anti-air Mistral.
PARIS: Leading European missile manufacturer MBDA has announced an agreement to assemble and integrate cutting edge missile systems in India with the state owned Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), with officials saying that new facilities that will be set up can also be geared for exports to other nations.
MBDA, which also makes the entire weapons package for the Rafale fighter jet, has said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on September 12 in London with Commodore Siddharth Mishra, the Chairman and Managing Director of BDL.
The European manufacturer already makes its Milan 2T anti tank missiles with BDL and also has a joint venture with private sector player Larsen and Toubro to develop and manufacture future anti tank weapons for the armed forces.
The company has announced that the new pact with BDL is for the final assembly, integration and test of its Mistral and ASRAAM missiles in India.
India had already ordered more than 380 of the ASRAAM air to air missiles for its fleet of Jaguar attack aircraft with work ongoing to integrate them on the aircraft. The first test firing is expected at the end of this year. In addition, the missile is also being pitched for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft as well as a future armed version of the Hawk trainer aircraft.
The Mistral anti air missile was in contention for a large order for very short range air defence systems for the armed forces but lost out to the Russian Igla S. However the missile is likely to be ordered for the armed version of the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter as well as the Light Combat Helicopter.
The BDL-MBDA combine has already manufactured over 50,000 missiles in India over the past decade, including the latest Milan 2T.

NAVAL Exercise
Warships from the navies of United States, Japan, Philippines and India participated in a weeklong exercise from 2 May to 8 May, in the South China Sea, sending a clear message of cooperation to protect the sovereignty of the Indo-Pacific. This was perhaps one of the most significant multilateral naval engagements in recent times in the South China Sea.
Six vessels were present for the transit through disputed international waters in the South China Sea. These included the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS William P. Lawrence. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force had two ships participating. The first was the lead ship, JS Izumo, of the Izumo-class of helicopter destroyer and the second was JS Murasame, a destroyer. The Izumo has previously participated in joint exercises with the United States and India. The Philippine Navy sent BRP Andres Bonifacio, a patrol ship, to join the multilateral exercise.

Guys I think that we should start a separate thread for Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor, because a lot of investment and projects are being setup over there, including the newly inaugurated Ak203 factory.

The rifles On the table- my wild guess is different variants of insas rifles,Note the thick receivers.
I think,its an mod kit manufacturer, pitching for upgrading our existing arsenal.

Politicising of the Military may seem far from the truth, but it is happening!
Narendra Modi’s first tenure as Prime Minister of India would not only be known for ‘Scam Free’ governance (hopefully) but also for achieving the near-impossible task of Politicising the Indian Military. Independent India’s first Commander-in-Chief categorically asserted that the Military must remain apolitical. This was an absolute truth, but for those times.
The most sensational change that has taken place in our environment is the quantum increase in connectivity at all levels, in particular, the so-called lower levels, casually termed as labour class. Everyone had a view even 50 years ago but there were no means to convey and connect. Today, nearly one billion Indians are ‘online’. Not long ago, even in the nineties, having a landline connection from MTNL was a status symbol. Process of digitisation has now been personally overseen by the PM himself. It has ensured that virtually every Indian, has access to either connect directly or through someone else.

Arjun's turret doesn't extend all the way to the end of the chassis itself. The one in pic does.
The armor/structure near gun mantlet is pretty different. Arjun doesn't have that bcoz of radar/sensor placed there

Eaton opens its first aerospace manufacturing facility in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: Power management company Eaton opened its first manufacturing facility in India in Bengaluru following demand from its main customers Boeing and Airbus to make fluid conveyance products locally and cater to the growing aircraft fleet in the country. Eaton has invested $ 10 million in the facility and plans to have a workforce of around 100 people in the first phase.
These products - critical for movement of parts such as wing flaps, suffer from wear and tear over a period of time. Eaton looks at producing the equipment to ensure that there is adequate supply when planes undergo maintanence, servicing and overhaul. India has around 650 planes, with over 500 of them being single aisle Airbus 320 and Boeing's 737 plane.
The new facility, located close to the airport in Bengaluru, will manufacture hose assemblies and other fluid distribution products, including oil debris monitoring systems, to serve commercial, business and regional aircraft.
“We believe this investment in India will help us grow our original equipment business because customers are investing heavily here. The site will leverage smart manufacturing technologies and contribute to local growth through employment, business and sourcing opportunities,” said Nanda Kumar, president, Aerospace Group, Eaton.
Eaton is also looking at India as a base to produce these equipment for the global market. The company has an existing design centre in Pune with over 1,000 people.
The facility, which will serve as the Hose Assembly Center of Excellence for Eaton’s global operations, is built in a record 10-month period at the 2.85 acres of land at the Karnataka Aerospace special economic zone (SEZ). The company representatives appreciated the support of state government while dealing with the project.
“The Aerospace SEZ is fast emerging as a major aerospace manufacturing hub,” said Kumar. “We see significant opportunity to localize the supply chain and have already established a strong supplier base. In addition, Bengaluru’s scientific and academic institutions have helped create a rich talent pool of well-qualified technical experts.”
With the opening of Bengaluru facility, Eaton now operates 27 aerospace manufacturinglocations around the world, including a joint venture in China.
In the aerospace industry, Eaton is a leading supplier of products and technologies forhydraulic systems, fuel and inerting systems, motion control and engine solutions. The company also serves commercial and military aerospace, marine and defence markets worldwide.

500 crore defence ministry plan to finance 250 startups
NEW DELHI: The defence ministry has finalised a Rs 500 crore plan to fund 250 startups and achieve 50 tangible innovations over the next five years as part of the overall policy to boost ‘Make in India’ in the arms production arena.
With the MoD now seeking the requisite approvals for the Rs 500 crore plan, defence minister Rajnath Singh on Monday emphasised the importance of “ideation, innovation and incubation” in cutting-edge technologies to achieve the goal of indigenisation and self-reliance in the defence sector.
Addressing the “Def-Connect 2019” seminar on the iDEX (innovations for defence excellence) initiative of the MoD, the minister said it was crucial for India to strengthen its defence manufacturing as well as research and development. He expressed confidence India will emerge as “a net innovator and net exporter of defence technologies rather than a net importer” in the years ahead.
Singh, however, was quite sanguine. “Our PM Narendra Modi has set a target of $5 trillion economy by 2024. Looking at the talent India possesses, I am pretty confident that we can become $10 trillion economy in the next 10-15 years,” he said.
