In a first, India figures on arms exporters list

The latest data on global arms transfer by SIPRI shows that Indian imports have come down since 2015.

NEW DELHI: In a first, India has figured on a list of global arms exporters, making a modest entry at number 23 but the ranking is likely to rise sharply over the coming years with the government’s focus on encouraging weapons sales abroad.

The latest data on global arms transfer by SIPRI shows that Indian arms imports have come down significantly (by 32%) since 2015, indicating that the ‘Make in India’ initiative is gaining ground but the country is still ranked as the world’s second biggest weapons buyers, just behind Saudi Arabia.

Interestingly, imports from the US have taken a huge dip in the past five years, with the data showing that Russia now accounts for 56% of arms supplies. In fact, the US no longer figures among the top three suppliers of arms to India. After Russia, Israel at 14% and France at 12% are the major sources of weapons for India.

Even though India has ordered systems like the Apache and Chinook helicopters and additional P8I maritime aircraft from the US, orders to Russia – from the S 400 anti-air system to additional T 90 Tanks and helicopters have been significantly higher. The recent $3 billion deal for Apache and MH 60 'Romeo' choppers has not been taken into account in the data set.

“The USA became the second-largest arms supplier to India in 2010–14 as the security relationship between the two countries developed into a strategic partnership. However, in 2015–19 India continued with its policy of supplier diversification, and imports of arms from the USA were 51% lower than in 2010–14,” the report says.

The silver lining for India, along with the 32% dip in imports has been the entry into the exporters list. At present, the exports shown are modest – they account for only 0.2% of the global arms market – but the start is significant. India’s biggest clients are Myanmar, which accounts for 46% of exports, Sri Lanka at 25% and Mauritius at 14%.

As reported by ET, India has a target to increase its defence exports to $ 5 billion within five years. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also shared at the ET Global Business Summit that the government will be extending additional Lines of Credit and grants for friendly foreign countries over the next five years.

The SIPRI data also shows the Pakistan has not become completely dependent on China for its weapon systems. Since 2015, China accounts for 73% of arms imports by Pakistan.

These journalists are stupid. India's export ranking has definitely improved but its not like we weren't exporting weapons earlier. India was at 27th place for 2010-14 time period, which has improved to 23rd place during 2015-19 time period according to Sipri Database

OFB exports its newly developed 52-calibre barrels to Bofors

The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), which is celebrating its 219th foundation day on Wednesday, has exported its newly developed 52-calibre barrel for 155 mm artillery guns to Bofors Test Center, its chairman Hari Mohan said.

He said that OFB has exported two 52-calibre barrels to Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors AB, from which it had imported 155 mm howitzer guns in the mid-80s.

"We have made a prototype which is truck-chassis mounted," Mohan told newspersons here.

In the last 14-15 years, the OFB has done "immense progress" in the field of high-calibre barrels, be it for tanks, medium and heavy artillery guns, and the barrel of Dhanush artillary gun has been indigenously developed, he said.

"Now we are embarking upon a barrel further increasing it to 52-calibre. The range of 155 mm Dhanush gun is 38 km. The Bofors gun barrel is 39-calibre, while that of Dhanush is 45-calibre," he said.

Mohan said the OFB has already designed and manufactured 52-calibre barrel, an important component of a full-fledged gun, and mounted one on a truck.

"We have exported these to Bofors and 52-calibre barrels have been taken by its test centre, which is using these for validation of 155 mm ammunitions being developed by global OEMs," he said.

More than 150 rounds of shells have been fired from these 52-calibre barrels, he said.

"The barrel is behaving better than expected and the Bofors Test Center is extremely happy," he said.

Apart from the barrel, Bofors is also taking the breech mechanism and muzzle brakes and all the three are being used, he said on Tuesday.

"We indigenously developed the technology for 155mm/52-calibre barrels and exported these to Bofors Test Center," OFB chairman said.

He said the OFB, which had initially handed over six Dhanush artillery guns to the Indian Army, will, in a few weeks, supply another six such guns.

What say people, preparations for leasing the second akula ?

========

The Government of India in the draft Defence Procurement Procedure 2020 has introduced "Leasing" as a new category for acquisition in addition to existing 'Buy' & 'Make' categories to substitute huge initial capital outlays with periodical rental payments.

USA would take advantage of it more then Russia me thinks. Could Lease us older ships of is navy navy perticularly amphibious class vessels like jalashwa / Austin class . Might even lease a wasp class ship to further impress on navy to expand it's capabilities.

Further thinking this will be used to train for new capabilities which India doesn't have right now.
Shinmaywa , wasp , old tankers , ospreys etc . A lot of platform could be leased to see if we actually need them in force structure down the line.

You are right, apparently this category is for non-frontline assets it seems. Simulators, transport fleet etc etc ...

I think it is for extra transport aircrafts also by this way we can test too and then at faster rate induct too.

Seems to be around 200 thermal imagers, assuming one per box. But the more important thing is that it's a "weapon sight". Wonder on what weapon its mounted? AMR?
Any weapon with the appropriate rails; so, the new weapon purchases and the current batch of moded AKs, M4s, Tavors, Sigs, Dragunovs, etc.

It is a dual purpose sight, so, it can function both as a clip-on and a helmet mounted night-sight.

It also comes in short, medium and long range versions and can function along with day scopes.

Arjun sights are really very ergonomic and have a ton of features. No wonder they are selling like hotcakes all over the world.
