America is more than capable of holding SL by its throat. They could have done that easily before 2009 when the tigers were around. They can even do it now albeit with a little more effort.

It is as if the want to touch their nose by sending their hand around the back of their head.

But why are they insisting that India take on China in SL?
Like Heinz said the TN factor cannot be ignored by the Centre. Any out of the way appeasement of SL might cause trouble in TN.

It is as if they want India to be a hedge against China but at the same time keeping a check on the country from within.

It will be too costly for Sri Lankan to place themselves between the Chinese and Indian cross fires . For commerce India would have No objection though.

Lankans know how to merry coat India and that India has a pathological defect of always applying/taking so called matured sugar talks instead of hard realist diplomatic action.
With the current confused foreign policies and spineless political leadership, they don't even want to engage India at the level they did with China. For them, it is unlikely to pay off as rich dividends. We're being fooled and taken lightly. We have to correct our course.

I call your remarks on Mao or better development without Mao nonsense. He is a messiah like Confucius for Chinese. What he did was like ploughing the field and laying the the foundation for upcoming generations (incl Deng) to further... Of course he made lots of mistakes. As time goes by more and more start to recognize his great contributions. U mentioned Taiwan... Okay, after KMT lost mainland to CCP, one of top reforms in Taiwan KMT carried out in Taiwan was land reform like CCP did on Mainland i.e. distributing lands from landlords to peasants abolishing feudal relation of production - That's what I called "groundwork" paving the way for profound socioeconomic advancement. And besides, KMT escaped to TW with almost all the treasury of whole China (ROC), gold, foreign reserve... TW received investment and transfer of industries from developed countries, while Mainland in contrast was under embargo due to tilting towards to Soviet Bloc at the very beginning and following Socialism/Communism...
