India is updating its military capabilities with hardware worth tens of billions of dollars in the face of long-standing tensions with regional rivals China and Pakistan.

"The contract for the ultra-light howitzers was awarded on Friday to BAE Systems Inc" of the United States, a unit of Britain-based BAE Systems Plc, a senior defence ministry official told AFP on condition of anonymity..

The government will spend 30 billion rupees ($560 million) on the field guns, the official said.

The howitzers, with a maximum range of 30 kilometers, will be used by the army's mountain artillery divisions along India's high-altitude frontiers.

India has fought three wars with Pakistan since independence in 1947, but China is increasingly seen as the main focus of its ambitious military modernisation and procurement policy.

That's just a rumour, nothing was proven.
As the Indian Army begins an official probe into the mysterious leak of its classified M777 ultra-light howitzer field evaluation trial report, across the world the gun is positively booming. According to a BAE Systems statement today, "An order for 46 M777 howitzers from the U.S. Department of Defense takes the total number of guns ordered to 1001."
While many in the Indian Army admit that the M 777 Howitzer may not have met the standards of artillery capabilities, it is felt that the leaked pages of the report are only a part of the whole report and that the Howitzer can still be chosen. The Army Headquarters is not showing any signs of buckling up under pressure and will support the M777 Howitzer when the case is taken up by the Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister A.K Antony. The final word on the acquisition is with the Cabinet Committee on Security.
