Boeing makes a splash in first day at Farnborough, taking orders and options for 100 737 MAX narrow-body jetliners - Military & Aerospace Electronics

Air Lease Corp. in Los Angeles, ordered 60 next-generation Boeing 737 MAX-8 and 15 737 MAX-9 fuel-efficient narrow-body passenger jetliners today at the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, England.
The deal, worth $7.2 billion, is the first 737 MAX order from a leasing company for Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Seattle, company officials say.
Boeing archrival Airbus, meanwhile, has sold a total of four aircraft -- an order for the next-generation A320neo from Arika Israeli Airlines in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Boeing is designing the 737 MAX family of passenger jets to compete directly with the Airbus A320neo -- short for new engine option -- which was the star last summer at the Paris Air Show when Airbus announced sales of nearly 700 of the fuel-efficient A320neo. Airbus says the A320neo is the world's fastest-selling passenger jetliner.
In the last show Airbus had booked orders for more than 700 A 320neo, making it the fastest selling aircraft in the history.

Embraer joins aircraft sales on Farnborough's first day with order from Hebei Airlines for five E190s - Military & Aerospace Electronics

South American aircraft manufacturer Embraer S.A. in São José Dos Campos, Brazil, took an order for five Embraer 190 regional passenger jets from Hebei Airlines in Shijiazhuang, China. The order was announced today at the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, England.
The deal, which is worth $226 million, is Embraer's first sale so far at Farnborough. Hebei Airlines should take deliver of the new Embraer E-Jets at the end of 2013.
Hebei Airlines now has two E190s in service, covering eight destinations with around 70 flights per week, Embraer officials say. To date, Embraer has more than 60 E190s in service in China since 2008 when Embraer entered the Chinese jet market, which company officials say will need 1,005 passenger jets as large as 120 seats over the next two decades.
The E190 sets 100 passengers and has a range of 2,400 nautical miles, which is suitable for flights on city pairs with more than 5.5 hours flight time. The first E-Jet went entered service in 2004, and now has about 850 aircraft in operation by 61 airlines in 42 countries, Embraer officials say.

Farnborough Airshow: Airbus fights back under dark skies | Reuters

Airbus (EAD.PA) has won a potential $4.2 billion order for its A350 passenger jet, its first major deal at a subdued Farnborough Airshow, where a faltering global economy is casting clouds as dark as the skies over southern Britain.

The deal announced on Tuesday with Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific (0293.HK) is a major boost for the European planemaker, which has been struggling to sell its A350-1000 "mini-jumbo" and make a dent in Boeing's (BA.N) hold on the lucrative corner of the passenger jet market, just below 400 seats.

some analysts say the euro zone debt crisis and slowing economic growth in China could see existing orders delayed or cancelled, and that some recent deals suggest Airbus and Boeing are heading into a price war.

"We can't see how it could be a very successful airshow this year," Cheuvreux analysts said in a research note, predicting the Farnborough week will produce a combined 300-400 orders for Airbus and Boeing, less than half the number at the equivalent annual show at Paris last year.

The order for the aircraft was announced last year. So they have taken almost 12 months to finalise order for the engines.

Go air also placed order for A 320 neos, wonder what happened to the engine order.

Airbus secures $2.3 billion order at Farnborough
Published July 11, 2012
Associated Press

FARNBOROUGH, England – European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has scooped up the only firm order so far on the third day of the Farnborough Airshow, in a further sign that airlines are concerned about the global economic outlook.

And with governments around the world on a cost-cutting drive, many airlines appear to be operating a wait-and-see approach, especially when compared with last year's airshow in Paris — Farnborough, which is south of London, alternates for the airshow with the French capital.

Airbus, a subsidiary of EADS, did get a firm order from the aerospace division of CIT Group, a transport finance and leasing company, which has ordered 10 mid-sized long-haul A330 aircraft, in a deal that has a list value of $2.3 billion. The deal includes five that were ordered earlier this year, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2014. With this new order, CIT now has a total order book of 162 aircraft scheduled for delivery through 2019, of which 89 are for Airbus aircraft.

"The A330 is already the market's favorite long-range aircraft, but we don't stop there; we are continuously improving the A330 with, for example, new weight variants which offer more payload-range capability," said Fabrice Bregier, Airbus' president and chief executive.
Though the first two days of this year's airshow were littered with some headline-grabbing orders, many of the deals announced have been commitments, including Boeing's $9.2 billion deal with GE Capital Aviation Services, the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric. Most commitments do become firm in the end but uncertainties remain.

That trend of failing to close out deals continued Wednesday.

Alongside its deal with CIT, Airbus revealed that China Aircraft Leasing Company, a fast growing Hong Kong based aircraft leasing company has committed to buy 36 current generation A320 short-haul aircraft, in a deal with a list value of $3.1 billion.

Earlier this week, Airbus revealed plans to overhaul its A330 range of aircraft to give it a longer flying range. By giving the plane the ability to carry more fuel — combined with greater efficiency — Airbus said the A330-300 will now be able to make longer journeys. For example, Seattle will now be accessible from Beijing, as will Tokyo from London.

The only deal Airbus' arch-rival Boeing announced Wednesday was a commitment by Irish-based leasing company Avolon to purchase 10 737 MAX 8s and 5 737 MAX 9s, as well as 10 Next-Generation 737-800s. The commitment for the A320's big rival has a list-price value of $2.3 billion.

Companies rarely pay the full price when placing large orders.

CFM receives over $1 billion in engine sales at Farnborough today - Military & Aerospace Electronics

CFM International, a supplier of aircraft engines, received over $1 billion in sales today for three different engine types. The sales came from Aviation Capital Group, Avolon and Juneyao and will be used on Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, Next-Generation 737 aircraft, A321 aircraft and A320neo aircraft.

Eighteen LEAP-1A engines were ordered by Aviation Capital Group in an order valued at $450 at list price. These engines will be powering 18 Airbus A320neo aircraft that are part of a 30-airplane purchase announced in November 2011.
Five CFM56-5B engines were ordered by Juneyao Airlines in China, for a value of over $100 million at list price. These engines will be used to power Airbus A321 aircraft. Delivers for this order will begin in 2013.

In addition to those sales, Avolon announced that it will order 15 LEAP-1B engines and 10 CFM56-7BE engines. These engines will be used in Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and Next-Generation 737 aircraft respectively. Avolon already uses CFM engines on 56 aircraft.

Leap-1B engines were created by CFM as part of a six-year collaboration effort with Boeing, and is the exclusive engine for the new 737 variant. CFM engines have been the sole powerplant for all 737 aircraft sold since 1981.
CFM seems to be cornering a major chunk of the civilian market. One of the rare AMerican-French collaborations that is so successful.

Boeing teases at Farnborough with vague offer of medium-sized maritime surveillance aircraft for global export - Military & Aerospace Electronics

Officials of the Boeing Co. in Seattle claim they are ready to offer the future medium-sized Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) for international oceanic intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
The problem now is Boeing is not disclosing the type of aircraft that will house the MMA's surveillance equipment. Boeing introduced the MMA concept Tuesday at the Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, England.
Despite lack of an actual aircraft, Boeing officials say the future aircraft will blend technologies the company developed for the U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft based on the twin-engine 737-800 airliner, as well as the E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) radar surveillance aircraft.

"We've selected a preferred aircraft and are in discussions with a manufacturer about supplying and modifying their aircraft," says Tim Peters, vice president and general manager of the Surveillance and Engagement segment of the Boeing Defense, Space & Security division in Seattle. "We hope to have an announcement on that element by the end of this year."

The MSA aircraft will be for several kinds of ISR missions, including anti-piracy, immigration patrols, economic exclusion zone enforcement, coastal and border security, and long-range search and rescue. The maritime surveillance market will be worth more than $10 billion over the next 10 years, Boeing analysts say.

Spotlight turns to output as Boeing wins show | Reuters

The world's dominant aircraft makers, Airbus and Boeing, left a rain-swept Farnborough Airshow without the order deluge some had predicted, but each claiming victories as they prepare to focus on delivering a huge jet backlog from a dwindling order boom.

Boeing Co won 50 percent more firm orders than its arch-rival, including a $14.7 billion bulk buy from United Continental announced not at the show but in Chicago on Thursday, helping it recover ground after falling behind last year.

EADS' Airbus won a long-awaited new customer for the largest version of its future A350, Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific, and on Thursday announced a raft of smaller orders.

The aerospace industry's biggest event was, as expected, a chance for Boeing to rack up strong orders for its fuel-efficient 737 Max narrowbody, its answer to the Airbus short-haul offering, the A320neo, which stole the show in orders in 2011.

Boeing said it took firm or provisional orders for 285 MAX jets and said it now had 649 firm orders, compared with 1,454 for the A320neo which gained a year's start as the two planemakers opted in succession to put fuel-saving engines on their most-sold jets.

Underscoring one of the key areas of growth anticipated by aerospace suppliers, United said its 150-plane order that included a purchase of 100 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft was aimed at replacing older aircraft in its fleet.

Long-awaited fleet replacements by U.S. airlines following a prolonged period of retrenchment are one of the main reasons - alongside growth in emerging markets - that aerospace executives remain confident despite the economic turbulence in Europe.

Yet with order books already full and economies beginning to feel the effects of Europe's debt crisis, the spotlight shifted to how Airbus and Boeing will meet planned production increases to deliver all the aircraft they have sold.
