Shocking moment girl kicks elderly Asian man, 80, to the ground causing his turban to fall off before spitting in his face

- Police in Coventry are hunting for the thug who laughed as victim fell
- Attack was filmed on a mobile and has been spread around Facebook
- Scroll down to see the attack on video

It is an English summer evening and an elderly man quietly makes his way along a city centre street.

Until he is confronted by a girl who attacks him, pushing the 80-year-old to the ground.

The unidentified thug spat in his face and left him sprawled on the pavement.

The sickening and unprovoked attack was captured on video by a passer-by using a mobile phone camera and shared on Facebook.

Police are treating the attack as serious malicious wounding, punishable with up to five years in prison.

The footage shows the girl knocking the Asian man to the ground in Coventry city centre last Saturday at 8.30pm. She was flanked by three men as she continued hurling abuse and spitting on the man.

The only person to help, by picking up the victim's turban, approached as the thugs walked away.

Detectives have urged witnesses to come forward to help catch the girl.

Chief Superintendent Andy Nicholson, said: 'This is a despicable, violent attack on an elderly man in broad daylight.

'The victim is an 80-year-old man. He was left with a bloodied nose and a black eye.

A video showing the assault is gathering momentum on social media and quite rightly the woman's actions are being condemned by everyone who's viewed it.

Detectives in Coventry are fast-tracking this investigation.

'We're doing everything we can to arrest the man's attacker as soon as possible.

'I'd encourage the woman to make contact with West Midlands Police as it's only a matter of time before we catch up with her.'

The video has sparked outrage on Facebook and Twitter.

Harmony Lully said: 'I actually feel physically sick, wish I never watched this now.

'I can't believe anyone would ever have the audacity to do such a horrible thing, especially in my own city! And shame on the people who stood and watched/filmed her and didn't have the decency to stop her. I hope justice will be served.'

Amadine Ambrico wrote: 'See this is what the world is coming to, unbelievable.

'If that was my daughter I would drag her to the police station and let her face up to this disgraceful act.'

Ajay Singh wrote: 'The Sikh turban is not just a piece of cloth ... It gives us a sense of responsibility ... Most of all, it gives us the values passed on to us by our holy book – and that includes standing up for the weak and vulnerable.''

Teenage girl arrested over violent attack on 80-year-old

A TEENAGE girl has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an 80-year-old man – leaving him with a bloodied nose and black eye – in a nasty Coventry city centre attack.

The 19-year-old was arrested at around 6.30pm today (August 16) after police traced her to an address in Gloucester.

She will be taken to a West Midlands Police station where she will be questioned about the attack in Trinity Street, Coventry, on Saturday evening (August 10) when the elderly victim was punched in the face and shoved to the ground.

A video of the attack – recorded by a passer-by on their mobile phone – had been circulated widely on social media throughout today and met with a wave of revulsion from viewers.

Coventry Police Chief Superintendent Andy Nicholson, said: "This was a despicable, violent attack on an elderly man in broad daylight. The victim is an 80-year-old man – he was left with a bloodied nose and a black eye.

"A video showing the assault spread rapidly on social media and quite rightly the offender's actions are being condemned by everyone who's viewed it."

The attack, which appears unprovoked, happened at around 8.30pm on Saturday evening near Sainsbury's in Coventry's Trinity Street.

Police are still keen to hear from people who witnessed the incident and moments leading up to the attack – and have urged anyone who shared the video or still images of the assault to remove them from social media accounts as they could hinder the enquiry.

The Girl must be punished...

I have witness to a similar incident in Manchester some 10 years back in Arandale City Centre, a Pakistani was roughed up and punched several times until he could free itself to safety...

another example of European racism and growing intolerance.

Why the elderly sikh didn't pull out the custom sikh sword and hit her?

Because the new-age Kirpan is more of a symbolic object than a weapon.

Teenager who attacked elderly man in Coventry street who has now died could face new charges

An 80-year-old man who was attacked by a young woman in Coventry city centre has died.

The teenager responsible for assaulting Joginder Singh in Trinity Street could now face new charges.

Mr Singh, aged 80, of Cannon Park, died on Sunday.

He had been pushed to the ground in Trinity Street on August 10. The incident was caught on camera and shown on the internet.

Coral Millerchip, 19, has already admitted a charge of assault, and will be sentenced after a separate matter has been concluded.

That hearing is likely to be subject to significant delays now that Mr Singh has passed away.

Det Chief Insp Matt Markham from Coventry CID, said: "Following the assault Mr Singh was readmitted to hospital and was being treated for a diagnosed condition and at this stage it is unclear if that is directly connected with the assault."

Our thoughts remain with the family and those affected by Mr Singh's death and we will continue to work with CPS and the coroner to establish the cause of death."

Specialist family liaison police officers have been appointed to liaise with Mr Singh's next of kin and we will continue to support the family at this sad time.

"Mr Singh was reported to be "fighting for his life" when Millerchip first appeared in Coventry Magistrates Court in August.

During the hearing prosecutor Pamela Meinert said that Mr Singh was in a critical condition in hospital.

She added that it was not known whether his condition was anything to do with the attack.

Mr Singh was discharged from hospital after the attack but was later re-admitted for treatment of a previously diagnosed condition.

A post-mortem examination of Mr Singh's body, carried out on Monday, was inconclusive.

Further tests are now being carried out to try and establish what caused his death.

Detectives have notified the Crown Prosecution Service who will now make a decision on what further action will be taken.

Police say any further court hearing is likely to be delayed until next year.

Responding to Mr Singh's death Coun Harjinder Singh Sehmi said: "It's really bad news - an extremely sad day for the community.

"She (Coral Millerchip) has already admitted that she attacked Mr Singh - there's nothing more that can be said really.

"Any decision about what happens now is in the hands of the Crown Prosecution Service and ultimately the courts.

"The attack was caught on camera with thousands of people viewing the video and commenting on what they saw."

British Girl Gets Jail for
Attacking Elderly Sikh Man

London: The British teenaged girl who attacked an 80-year-old Sikh pensioner in a city centre in Britain's Coventry last year has been jailed for two years by the Warwick crown court. Coral Millerchip, 20, attacked frail pensioner Joginder Singh at the city centre in August last year, an act which was captured on camera and caused an outrage among the Sikh community in the country, the Coventry Telegraph reported Friday. Millerchip punched Joginder Singh to the ground with his Sikh turban falling off in the brutal assault. The judge Friday ruled that the girl had "humiliated" Singh and sentenced her to a two-year jail term and 20 more months for an unconnected burglary. Mr Singh suffered a scratched nose in the attack and was later discharged after being taken to the hospital. A resident of Coventry in Britain's West Midlands, he was a dementia patient and died three months after the attack from an unrelated health complaint. Millerchip pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, the report said. Describing it to be "a serious type of offence", the judge said: "This man was very vulnerable due to his age and due to a medical condition." "He was an elderly gentleman - you could have just walked away from him. Instead of that you assaulted him and humiliated him," the judge said. The judge said that Mr Singh was no threat to her and nothing could justify such an attack. The girl's counsel, David Murray contended that Millerchip had "a very troubled childhood", the report said.
