Delhi Metro has become the world's first railway network to earn carbon credits from the United Nations for helping cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The transport system has helped reduce pollution levels in the city by 630,000 tonnes a year, a UN release said.

If not for the Metro, the 1.8 million people who use it daily would have travelled by cars, buses or motorbikes, adding to pollution, it added.

It will now get $9.5m (£6.1m) in carbon credits annually for seven years.

And as the number of passengers increase, so will this figure.

Carbon credits are generated by a UN-run scheme called the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

The mechanism gives firms in developing countries financial incentives to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

"The United Nations body administering the clean development mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol has certified that Delhi Metro has reduced emissions," the UN statement said.

"No other Metro in the world could get the carbon credit for the above because of the very stringent requirement to provide conclusive documentary proof of reduction in emissions," it added.

Every passenger who uses the Metro instead of cars or buses helps reduce greenhouse emissions by approximately 100gm of carbon-dioxide for every trip of 10km (6 miles) and that helps in reducing global warming, the UN said.

Delhi's hi-tech metro system was launched in 2002. Parts of the network are underground while some sections use elevated tracks.

The system, which covers some of the city's most congested streets, is seen as the answer to Delhi's traffic chaos and has helped in lowering air pollution levels.

Congratulations to the entire DMRC and a special thanks to Mr Elattuvalapil Sreedharan without whose guidance i doubt this magnificent addition to India's infrastructure would have been possible.Hat's off to you and your team sir!

Proud moment!

Thank you Sreedharan sir. This was possible only because of your restless efforts. DM is now world's first train network to earn UN carbon credits. A best example set here for West/East to learn from.

So France must have a trillion carbon credits coming our way. We are much cleaner than Delhi.

Good job with Delhi Metro.

Now, this is what I want connecting all the capitals of India, including those in North East.

Train à Grande Vitesse - Duplex (France)

Inter City Expreßzug (Germany):

Sapsan or Сапсан (Russian Federation):

Shinkansen or 新幹線 (Japan):

^^ Great idea, but High speed trains are best suited to relatively shorter distances 500-750km. Any longer and they become not so viable since taking a plane is cheaper and faster.

In India, High speed trains will work best on

Bangalore-Chennai-Hyderabad
Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune
Jaipur-Delhi-Agra sections

Anywhere else will be largely a waste of money.

The tracks will have to be fenced on both sides and also run on elevated sections for substantial stretches. Standard operating procedures world wide. People will not be able to cross them as they please.

The roads may be clean with some fake flowers and clean pavements but the reality is the carbon foot print of Europeans is more than most people. An average American consumes 19 barrels, the average EU man consumes 14 barrels, Average Indian consumes only 0.8 barrels of oil. You cant deny that, if you combine EU as an block then its still one of the largest polluters in the world. You also need Carbon minus points for polluting all these years, it will take another 40years for your nations to recover from that past minus points.

Hey man, do not insult me by throwing us in with Yanks. France is a separate country and environmental culture and have our own standards which are much higher than theirs. You can see our carbon footprint is only 1.25% of the globe while we are 5% of GDP. India is nearly 6% carbon emissions and only 2.7% of global GDP. Our economy is much cleaner per Kwh than any major economy on Earth.

Overall credits? Maybe.

For rail network? You can try next time. For now no other metro in the world other than DMRC satisfies UN criteria.

'The United Nations body administering the clean development mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol has certified that Delhi Metro has reduced emissions', the UN said, in a statement on the Delhi Metro carbon credits award.

'No other Metro in the world could get the carbon credit for the above because of the very stringent requirement to provide conclusive documentary proof of reduction in emissions.'

Never before have carbon credits been give to a railway network and, according to the UN, the metro has helped Delhi hit an annual 630,000 tonne air pollution reduction level.
UN Carbon Credits for Enviro-Friendly Delhi Metro

"We proposed an innovative method of proving the emissions using sampling techniques.

"After rigorous persuasion the UN finally agreed with this technique as the technique is very scientific in nature."

DMRC has received the Carbon Credits due to the unique Regenrative Braking system. In simple language it means that everytime the trains brake, the traction motors generate electricity and it is transfered to the Over Head wires.

DMRC Prevents Emission of 90,000 Tonnes Carbon Dioxide
The certification report was given by Germany - based validation organization TUV NORD on 22nd February 2009, which conducted an audit on behalf of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and found that DMRC stopped the emission of 90,004 tonnes of carbon dioxide from 2004 to 2007 by adoption of regenerative braking systems in the Delhi Metro trains.
Under the regenerative braking process for which DMRC earned carbon credits, whenever trains on the Metro network apply brakes, three phase - traction motors installed on these trains act as generators to produce electrical energy which goes back into the Over Head Electricity (OHE) lines. The regenerated electrical energy that is supplied back to the OHE is used by other accelerating trains in the same service line, thus saving overall energy in the system as about 30% of electricity requirement is reduced.

The DMRC saved 1,12,500 megawatt hours of power generation by restricting and reusing power on its trains through regenerative braking, thus saving the emission of 90,004 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from 2004 to 2007. It is estimated that in 2008, 39,000 tonnes of CO2 were prevented from being emitted and this figure will increase to over 100,000 tonnes per year once Phase - II of the Metro project is fully operational.
