Killings of Nawab Bugti's relatives shock Karachi

Islamabad: In a high profile political double-murder case, the daughter and granddaughter of slain Baloch nationalist leader, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti were brutally shot dead in Pakistan's Karachi city last week.

The shocking murders are being seen as a warning sign to the leader of Baloch Republican Party, Brahmadagh Bugti, late Nawab Bugti's grandson.

The killings include Brahmadagh's daughter, Jhumar, 34, who was married to Balochistan member of provincial assembly Mir Bakhtiar Domki and their daughter, Jaana Domki. They were both shot dead near Gizri flyover of Karachi. The driver of their vehicle, Barkat Baloch was also shot dead.

According to the reports, the attack took place a short distance from Jhumar's maternal uncle's home in the heavily policed Clifton area.

Baloch nationalist website, Balochwarna reports that a black car intercepted Jhumar's car in Clifton around midnight. A man in dressed in black clothes with a black face mask came out to carry out the attack.

Then the assailant opened the rear door and two bikes accosted the car. Jhumar offered her jewellery, phone and valuables to the man thinking that he was a robber. In response, the killer said he didn't need her valuables but he was there to kill her and her daughter.

Adding brutality to the murders, victim Jhumar was made to witness the brutal murder of her daughter, Jaana. Then, Jhumar was shot, over a dozen times in the head, face and neck at point blank range and was left in a pool of blood.

The soul- stirring murders have once again plunged Pakistan's southern Baluchistan province into political mayhem. The country's Supreme Court has termed the case as most sensitive and ordered the arrest of the murderers by February 10.

Report from Pakistan on the issue

Killing of Brahamdagh Bugti's sister, niece in Karachi

Complete strike observed in parts of Balochistan

* Balochistan Assembly unanimously passes resolution condemning killing

* Seeks arrest of culprits

By Mohammad Zafar

QUETTA: A complete shutter-down strike was observed in Nasirabad and Sibi division against the target killing of Balochistan Republican Party (BRP) chief Brahamdagh Bugti's sister and niece in Karachi on Monday.

Life came to a halt in more than a dozen townships and cities of the province, while people condemned the brutal killing of women and children.

The Balochistan Assembly also passed a resolution, condemning the killing of fellow lawmaker Nawabzada Bakhtiar Khan Domki's wife and daughter, and demanded the provincial government to approach the Sindh government and unearth the culprits behind the heinous crime. Strike was observed in Sibbi, Shoran, Dhaddar, Mach, Dera Allahyar, Usta Muhammad, Bakhtiarabad, Lehri, Sohbatpur, Nasirabad and Ghandawa to protest against the killings of the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Nawab Akbar Bugti. According to the Baloch Republican Party, the victims had recently sought asylum in Switzerland. The government and its agencies had been chasing Brahamdagh Bugti in Afghanistan, India and Switzerland, the party recalled.

Members of the Balochistan Assembly criticised the Sindh Police, especially the Karachi Police, for terming the incident a case of tribal feud or target killing and demanded a high-level inquiry to unearth the culprits.

Speaker Aslam Bhootani presided over the session on Tuesday. PML-N provincial chief Sardar Sanaullah Zehri took to the floor on a point of order and said it was inhumane that even females were not being spared. "The Sindh government must properly investigate the murders instead of terming this incident targeted killing or tribal feud."

Lawmakers Sheikh Jaffar Mandokhel of PML-Q, Maulvi Sarwar Musakhel, Sardar Aslam Bizenjo, Mir Shahnwaz Marri, Abdul Khaliq Bashar Dost, Provincial Finance Minister Mir Asim Kurd and others strongly condemned the incident and said the Sindh government had failed to protect the lives of innocent people.

"Earlier, provincial minister Rustam Jamali was shot dead in Karachi and police failed to arrest the culprits. The Sindh government must tell why the people of Balochistan are being ruthlessly killed in Karachi," Abdul Khaliq Bashardost said.

Sheikh Jaffar Mandokhel tabled the resolution in which he lamented that the police had termed the incident a case of personal enmity without any investigation. The Balochistan Assembly, through the resolution, demanded that the Balochistan government approach the Sindh government for proper investigation.

I think this is definitely Musharafs handy work and perhaps pay back to the threats Bramadagh Bugati made towards Mushraf last month.

Musharaf must have used his contacts in ISI to get the dirty job done. He surely does look like one of the harmless uncle you meet in a booze party but make no mistakes this guy is very very brutal man. After all he started the Kargil war.

US Congress hearing of Balochistan offends Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has conveyed its serious concern over the US Congress powerful committee's meeting to be held on Wednesday exclusively on the issue of Balochistan.

Foreign Office Spokesman Abdul Basit told Online that Pakistani Embassy in Washington has taken strong notice of the scheduled meeting of the US Congress Committee on Foreign Affairs to deliberate the issue of Balochistan.

The official website of US Congress displayed the notification and topic of the meeting.

A Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher will chair the hearing. Rohrabacher recently in an article expressed support for an independent Balochistan.

"Perhaps we should even consider support for a Balochistan carved out of Pakistan to diminish radical power there (in Pakistan)," Rohrabacher wrote in his article.

"Our embassy in Washington is already in touch with the organizers of the hearing of the committee. They know how we feel about it. Our concerns have been forcefully conveyed in Washington," Basit told Online when he was asked about US legislator's planned deliberation over the most sensitive issue of Pakistan.

The powerful House of Representatives Committee, that would hold deliberations on the hot issue of restive Balochistan, also oversees America's foreign assistance programme. And the touching a sensitive issue by US legislators is deemed very important when the deteriorating Pak-US relations are in process of repairing.

Pakistan is considering the issue of Balochistan as its internal issue and some years ago had refused to allow the US to open Consulate in the province.

When contacted for his official version over the meeting of the US Congress Committee, Advisor on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar said that a foreign country's parliament is involved in it, "We cannot comment on it. The Pakistani Foreign Office comments would be our stance".

The US State Department involved itself in the issue of Balochistan when its spokesperson Victoria Nuland last month urged Pakistan to "really lead and conduct a dialogue that takes the Balochistan issue forward".

"The United States is deeply concerned about the ongoing violence in Balochistan, especially targeted killings, disappearances and other human rights abuses," she said.

Interestingly, Nuland addressed the issue in a "twitter-briefing" that the department holds every Friday.

"This was a very popular question on our feed, so we wanted to make sure that we answered it today," said Ms Nuland who focused on the violence plaguing Balochistan instead of tackling political issues raised in most of the tweets.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence expressed concerns over deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan and murder of granddaughter of Nawab Akbar Bugti in Karachi, summoning intelligence agencies to brief the panel on Feb 29.While the Supreme Court of Pakistan has also took notice of the situation—Online

Critics of USA may see this as an example of how Americans start down a road which ends who knows where. It is not a good thing for a US congressman to talk about carving up a sovereign country.

Personally, however, I will say my sympathy is with the people of Balochistan.
