Tejas is not expensive per unit but it is the development cost distributed over just 123 planes which inflate the cost
The current production version is $43 million fly away, the Mk1A is $66 million barring any problems. Those are HAL's numbers. The development cost included would make it $86 million.

http://idrw.org/tejas-mk-1a-to-cost-rs-463-crore-or-rs-599-crore-per-a-unit/

Since the history of engines show that such moves are impossible, I have deduced that France has accepted to allow Kaveri engine itself to be fitted in Rafale.
GoI never signed, there will be no Kaveri unless GTRE can pull SCB out of a hat.

First you give source for your delusional claim that per unit cost if Tejas excluding development coat and infrastructure building cost is above $40 million. Then we can talk of my source. You made the claim first, so give source first
Source for a universal truth? It is well known that hal has quoted about 50000 crore for 83mk1a which puts their cost to around 85 million per unit.

N-AMCA enters Design Phase, Navy Mark-2 development to start soon
Published April 21, 2019 | By admin
SOURCE: RAUNAK KUNDE / NEWS BEAT / IDRW.ORG

Dr. Girish Deodhare, Director General, ADA speaking to the Indian media has confirmed that flexibility studies of Carrier based 5th generation fighter aircraft based on AMCA design have been completed and the flexibility study report has been accepted by Indian Navy and the program is set to enter design phase by end of this year. Indian Navy in 2016, had approached ADA to develop a carrier deck version of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and soon flexibility studies were commissioned in 2017 to see if it is viable to convert Airforce-AMCA design into Carrier based 5th generation fighter aircraft.

While ADA is tight-lipped on proposed changes which AMCA will have to go through to be converted into a Carrier based 5th generation fighter aircraft, Industrial sources close to idrw.org have said that ADA is well aware of challenges that it will face in the program and is counting on Navy Mark-2 program to provide necessary experience that it believes will act as a stepping stone towards the development of N-AMCA program.

ADA at Aero India 2019 had showcased the final design of the proposed, Navy Mark-2 which company will start working on by the end of 2020. Navy Mark-2 is a single seater fighter compatible with existing aircraft carriers operated by Indian Navy including INS Vikrant (IAC-1) which will enter service in 2021. Navy Mark-2 has gone through design and configuration changes based on the feedback of the Navy Mk1 flight test records used as Technology Demonstrator for the Navy Mark-2 program.

Defense analysts Ranesh Rajan believes N-AMCA will require larger wing area along with Horizontal Tail area for Short Carrier takeoffs and landings. strengthening of the undercarriage along with landing gear will also be required. Navy most likely will opt for Wing fold design to use under deck storage facility on the aircraft carrier. N-AMCA might have design cues from AF-AMCA program but will be a different Beast altogether under the skin, as seen in Navy Mark-2 and MCF-Mk2 programs where striking similarities are limited to only outer design cues.

N-AMCA program is still under advanced stages of pre-development and will only be ready for production post-2030 and is likely to serve onboard INS Vishal (IAC-2) a 65000-tonne conventional class aircraft carrier which Indian Navy will develop post commissioning of INS Vikrant (IAC-1) into its fleet.

Too late to start now.

China is working on two stealth bombers - one supersonic stealth bomber and one stealth attack aircraft. Also J-20 is heavier than AMCA - it will work in a stealth sniper role as F-22 as well as in SEAD role. J-31 will be Chinese (and Pakistani) regular fighter.

By the time we can mature our stealth technology, stealth detection technology will proliferate - ISRT, quantum radars and long range networked radars capable of weapons lock.

Our smartest approach would be to asimetrically close the capability gap with China - Ghatak and arsenal planes loaded with cruise missiles. This is why we need a cheap Nirbhay (probably a stealth version of Nirbhay later).
Not just that, the loyal wingman program introduced recently is a good way to increase noise in airspace. Stealth is useful when you don't have interference, else its all garbage. These wingman drones is the right way to counter the Chinese threat.

*Update*
There buying of Su35 has got me worried though, they are notorious to rengineer war machines.
Fair warning though, Chinese are pretty darn good in Ai If not better in some areas.

It's depends on the RCS values
Or TRM muduel
Or radar size
Netra radar detection range nearly 550km+
Uttam aesa radar
0.0001-{20km}
0.001-{35km}
0.1-{100km}
1.0-{175km}
5-{260km}
10-{300km}
It's for only a tejas mk2 jet

Generally the number of TRM modules determine the range and performance of a AESA radar. The size of the radar and thereby the number of TRM is determined by the size of the nose of the aircraft and the available power.

UTTAm radar can have increased range for AMCA if the nose radius and power is ore than Tejas. UTAAM for Tejas has 150km range without radome. With radome, the range reduces. For AMCA, the range may be higher than that for Tejas

Judging by how Tejas was developed and the state of its final variants I would say the best course of action for AMCA is co-development with other countries. For lower end 5th gen fighters you have the SOKORs, Turks, while for higher end you have UK and French-German consortium.

Or, considering that India needs 5th gen capabilities fast, outright purchase from existing offerings like F-35 or the still immature Su-57.

India may buy F-35. If Turkey is out of F-35 program, then an opening for India may open.

Tejas was first attempt by India to make a modern fighter. Second one won't be that late.
BTW, if question is for co development, why to lower end? We can even do that ourselves if we have to go low end. US & Russia are best for co development. France only if US & Russia don't share tech.

Only if provided that it doesn't come up with strings attached and can be integrated with every IAF weapon what we want to use on it.

Right now, it won't even take off if US turns off its SAT.

That radar is a prototype ,and has the capability to scale up for the fighters....
