    AKASH NG will come with

    active RF seeker
    laser proximity fuze
    dual pulse solid propulsion
    cannisterized
    range 50km
ability to engage upto 10 targets
    etc

basically it will end up being a different SAM system

Surface-to-air missile 'Akash' on Tuesday was successfully test fired for the first time with a home-made radio frequency seeker against target Banshee.
The missile was launched from the Launch Complex-III at ITR Chandipur in Odisha, at 13:38 hours, according to a Defence Ministry statement.

"The missile can target aircrafts flying at 18 km altitude and has a range of 30 km. The radars, telemetry and electro-optical systems along the coast have tracked and monitored all the health parameters of the missile," the statement read.

India on Tuesday successfully test-fired Akash its supersonic surface-to-air missile with indigenous radio frequency seeker from a test range in Odisha, officials said. The state-of-the-art indigenous missile targeting an UAV ‘Banshee’, was fired from the launch complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here this afternoon.

“The radars, telemetry and electro-optical systems along the coast have tracked and monitored all the health parameters of the missile,” an official statement said.

The supersonic missile is the first surface-to-air missile with indigenous seeker to be test fired and is being inducted into the Army as short range surface to air missile.

The supersonic missile is the first surface-to-air missile with indigenous seeker to be test fired and is being inducted into the Army as short range surface to air missile.

With the successful test firing, India has achieved the capability of making any type of surface to air missile, defence sources said.Akash has a strike range of about 25 km and carries a 55- kg fragmentation warhead that is triggered by proximity fuse.

It is an all-weather area air defence weapon system for defending vulnerable areas against medium range air targets penetrating from low, medium and high altitudes.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Akash missile system has the capability to neutralise aerial targets like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles as well as ballistic missiles.

The system is designed to neutralise multiple aerial targets attacking from several directions simultaneously. The system is autonomous and its operation is fully automated. There is flexibility in deployment, they said.

It uses state-of-the-art integral ram jet rocket propulsion system and the onboard digital autopilot ensures stability and control. Electro-pneumatic servo actuation system controls cruciform wings for agile response and thermal batteries provide onboard power supply.

The radio proximity fuse has advanced signal processing features. Together with the pre-fragmented warhead and safety arming mechanism, a high kill probability of manoeuvring targets is assured.

The launch operations were witnessed by Director General (Missiles) of DRDO and Scientific Adviser to the defence minister G Satheesh Reddy and other senior officials of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Reddy congratulated all the DRDO scientists and Armed Forces for the successful test firing of Akash, the statement said

Now missile range shall also improve. Akash with seeker shall have higher range.

I wonder what the Pk (Kill Probability) is? Anything less than a Pk of 0.9 against highly maneuvering targets can be classified as a dud! I hope it's not, since they haven't mentioned this.

The dual pulsed motor would mean that it is no longer ramjet? This will make it a BARAK-8. Are you confident?

Yes, Command guidence is no more there in final engagement. Radar shall guide the missile initially. It will not be a lock on before launch system.

Still we do not know whether the same Akash with ramjet Propulsion is used on dual impulse rocket motor is used.

Why hasn't there been any work to make army version of Akash launcher a TELAR instead of TEL ? The last 2K12M4 version of Kub used the Buk TELAR with integrated guidance radar.

Is it too costly ? Redundant ? Or something else ?

Probability of Kill depends on Tracking and targeting along with the missile engagement. So in current scenario, we could say that a single missile Pk is 0.8 based on 88% kill probability in accordance with different subsystems (if we have to believe open source).

No. It is still command guided. RF seeker is for terminal guidance only.
Actually none of the SAM's are fire and forget system barring MANPADs.

Then, don't we need BARAK-8 from Israel anymore? We can replace that too if the seeker is compatible with such missile too, isn't it?

We need all, we just don't need them in bulk. Let our enemies be confused.

    practically you are right

but IMO and limited knowledge, if the missiles active seeker range is high enough to allow LOBL then it will count as a fire and forget system. in real life chances of that happening is pretty slim unless the pilot wants to commit suicide :biggrin2:
