Russian Tu-22M3 “Backfire” Bomber Crash Lands Into A Field During Emergency, Crew Safe

Accident is Third in Series of Significant Russian Military Mishaps in December.

A Russian Tupolev Tu-22M3, NATO reporting name “Backfire”, twin-engine supersonic bomber crash-landed yesterday in the Atrakhan-Oblast region of southern Russia after suffering a reported engine failure. The crew escaped without injuries after bringing the aircraft into a “field” in a rural setting without a high concentration of civilians. The crew’s actions are already being hailed as “heroic” in Russian news and social media. The aircraft was unarmed and flying in a routine training mission and was on fire as the crew escaped.

The news of this most recent mishap for the Russian military comes only a week after a tragic fire aboard the country’s only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, killed at least one person, injured 10 and left 2 sailors unaccounted for.

Earlier this month, on December 12, 2019, the Moscow Times reported the crash of a Russian Mi-28 two-man gunship helicopter, NATO reporting name “Havoc”, that killed two crewmembers on Tuesday night, December 10, near the Korenovsk airfield in the Krasnodar region. The Moscow Times, citing an Interfax release of a Russian Defense Ministry’s official statement, reported that the Mi-28 gunship’s “flight took place without ammunition. There are no marks of destruction on the ground. Both pilots were killed”.

While reasons for the string of accidents in the Russian military are under individual investigations, the frequency of Russian accidents mirrors U.S. military aviation accidents that has become the focus of media attention during much of the year. These include a tragic December 5th crash of a U.S. Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter that killed 3 near Kimball, Minnesota, a string of accidents in U.S. T-38s and F-16s throughout the year, and a sensational and tragic fatal crash of a U.S. F/A-18E in a well-known western U.S. low flying area.

This week’s accident is the second one involving a Tu-22M3 so far in 2019. Earlier this year on January 22, 2019, a Tu-22M3 crashed near the city of Olenegorsk in Russia’s Murmansk region, where the long-range bombers often operate from. Four people died in the January 2019 accident. Russia reported the aircraft was unarmed at the time of the crash. Adverse weather in the region, including an arctic storm, was cited as a possible contributing factor to the fatal accident.

So where's the safety afforded to twin engines when a twin engine still crashes despite having a malfunction on only 1 engine? Or are these twin engine crashes only limited to Russoan planes. I remember there were several instances in the past of twin-engined commercial airliners flying long distances despite 1 of its engine shutting down due to various issues.

Russian engines have a really bad habit of catching on fire, I assume when it does that it damages the fuel regulator and they can't shut it down. Once you have a blow torch burning behind you there isn't much to do but eject. The Tu-22M3 pilots can't eject so they had to ditch it in a field as their aircraft burned around them.

Russian Su-57 Crash in Pre delivery trails today

One of Russia’s cutting-edge Su-57 fighter jets has crashed during routine factory test flights near the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft plant in the Far East. The pilot ejected safely and was picked up by a Mi-8 rescue helicopter.
The aircraft involved in the incident belonged to the manufacturer and was undergoing a series of flight tests some 110 kilometers of Dzyomgi air base in Russia's Khabarovsk region.

There were no casualties or damage on the ground, the manufacturer confirmed in a brief statement. The crashed jet's black boxes are yet to be recovered.

The 5th-gen plane has been on trials since 2010, and finally entered serial production only this year. So far, Russia has only a handful of operational Su-57s that were manufactured during the pre-production period.

The aircraft, however, has already been tested in real combat conditions, briefly taking part in Russia’s anti-terrorism campaign in Syria. Due to their maneuverability and supersonic features, the twin-engine stealth Su-57s are set to become the backbone of Russian aerial superiority during warfare. The Su-57 is set to be fitted with ‘smart’ guided bombs and will reportedly get a highly maneuverable hypersonic missile, similar to Kinzhal.

Iranian MiG-29 fighter jet crashes

An Iranian MiG fighter jet that crashed in the northwest of the country on Wednesday killed both pilots.

December 25, 201909:31
  • A helicopter from the Red Crescent has been dispatched to the crash site near Sabalan mountain
TEHRAN: An Iranian military fighter jet crashed on Wednesday near a dormant volcano in the northwest of the country and its pilot was missing, official media reported.

State news agency IRNA said the jet went down at 9:00 am (0530 GMT) near Mount Sabalan, in the Lesser Caucasus range, and was a MiG-29 on a test flight after being overhauled.

Amateur video footage published on the social media accounts of various media outlets in Iran appeared to show smoke rising above snow-capped peaks.

Fars news agency said the plane had been found but there was no trace of its pilot and that he could have ejected from the aircraft.

A search and rescue operation was underway for the pilot, who the army identified as Col. Mohammadreza Rahmani, one of its most experienced fliers.

“Following the crash of a military plane in Ardabil (province), helicopter and rescue groups have been sent to the region,” Iran’s Red Crescent said in a statement on its website.

The official website of the army said search and rescue efforts had been hampered by bad weather, with snow making areas impassable.

Iran’s third highest peak, Mount Sabalan, features a crater that turns into a lake at certain times of the year.

Taiwan’s military chief among the eight dead as helicopter makes forced landing

Taiwan’s senior military official was one of eight dead on Thursday after the helicopter carrying them made a forced landing in a mountainous area near the capital, Taipei, the defense ministry said.

The majority of the helicopter was in a northern forest covered in fog, its blades shattered into pieces, while dozens of rescuers comb the wreck for survivors, showing photos released by emergency services.

The chief of staff, Air Force General Shen Yi-ming, died during the incident, while five of the 13 people on board survived, the army said in a statement. “Eight of our colleagues were killed,” a military spokesperson told a press conference that was broadcast live on television.

The defense ministry said it had sent a rescue team after the forced landing of the Black Hawk helicopter in New Taipei City after the aviation authorities lost contact with the vessel at 8:22 am. The helicopter had left Taipei on a mission to visit soldiers in the northeastern province of Yilan for the Lunar New Year at the end of the month.

The incident comes a week before Democratic Taiwan holds presidential and parliamentary elections on January 11.
President Tsai Ing-wen, who is looking for re-election, canceled all campaign activities until Saturday and urged the authorities to make every effort to save. She is scheduled to give a speech at 3 p.m.

The United States, which has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, but is the strongest international donor and most important arms supplier, sold the island 60 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters in 2010. It was not immediately clear whether the helicopter during the incident from Thursday there was one of them however.

The incident was the last in a series of aviation accidents in Taiwan, after the crash of a Black Hawk helicopter off the east coast in 2018 killed six people on board and the crash of an F-16 fighter jet killed a pilot in the same year.
In 2016, the Navy wrongly shot a supersonic rocket and hit a fishing boat in waters that separate Taiwan from diplomatic rival China.

China, which claims that Taiwan as its territory is being brought under Beijing’s supervision if necessary by force, regularly calls the island the most sensitive issue in its ties with the United States. Taiwan says it is an independent country called the Republic of China, the official name.
