Pakistan waging 'war' on Line of Control

15 June 2012

In a season of 'cosmetic' Indo-Pakistan diplomatic bonhomie, the security situation along the Line of Control (LoC) in frontier Poonch district is tense.

Official sources say the Pakistani army is targeting the Indian posts with rockets, mortars and automatic weapons in the Krishna Ghati sector for over 24 hours. The Pakistani troopers have ignored messages sent across through a hotline, seeking de-escalation of the situation along the LoC.

The ceasefire breach comes in the backdrop of new Army chief General Bikram Singh's two-day visit to Jammu & Kashmir from Friday.

One solider has already succumbed to his injuries while two others with critical bullet injuries are undergoing treatment.

The first round of firing started on Wednesday around 2 pm and continued for over three hours. Initially, India exercised restraint but both sides exchanged heavy firing after Pakistani Army officers ignored hotline messages.

Contrary to the concept of honour among soldiers, even jawans who went forward to retrieve the dead body of the killed soldier were shot at by Pakistan. Ministry of Defence spokesman Col RK Palta said firing was escalated from other Pakistani posts, using rockets and heavy automatic weapons, to prevent evacuation of injured jawans.

Palta added that intermittent mortar and automatic firing had been continuing, though the situation was under control. "Both armies exchanged intermittent firing till Thursday afternoon," the Colonel added. Senior Army officers are monitoring the situation very closely and have sounded the alert following reports of attempted infiltration bids from across the LoC.

In the past two weeks, the Pakistani army has violated the ceasefire agreement on four occasions and several small groups have attempted infiltration but failed.

Certainly we are totally helpless considering the fact that despite losing a solider, we are pleading to show some restraint.

Gentlemen, the thought that just occurred to me as the perfect response is Indian snipers. A response that does not really escalate the conflict, but which would make the Pakistanis pay a dear price. I look forward to your comments.

Pak cancels flag meet without assigning reasons: Army
PTI | 03:06 PM,Jun 16,2012
Jammu, Jun 16 (PTI) A flag meet, scheduled for today, between Indian and Pakistani Armies on ceasefire violations and cross-LoC firing in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district was cancelled by Pakistani Army without assigning any reason. "Pakistani army has cancelled today's scheduled flag meeting on ceasefire violations and cross-LoC firing in Poonch sector," Ministry of Defence Public Relation Officer Col R K Palta said. "They have neither assigned any reason for the abrupt cancellation nor given any fresh dates for the flag meet," he said. The flag meeting was scheduled for today at 1100 hours at Chakan-Da-Bagh cross-LoC travel and trade point on Indo-Pak border in Poonch to lodge protest with Pakistani army over heavy firing on Indian posts and ceasefire violations by them. Army has lodged a strong protest with its Pakistani counterpart through hot-line contact over firing on Indian posts along the line of control in Poonch sector since June 13. Pakistani troops indulged in unprovoked and heavy arms firing on the post along LoC in Krishna Ghati sector on June 13, leaving a jawan dead and three others injured. They also fired on Indian posts in the same area on June 14. Palta said a message was passed through hotline to Pakistan to exercise restraint for de-escalating the situation.

I think it's related to them not getting anything from India on Siachen. India should retaliate.

They are slowly racking up Kashmir ,I think they want to start a limited escalation to make their people again united as a last ditch attempt to unify their falling country . India should get high on alert to face any eventuality .
This came in todays DAWN news:
ISLAMABAD, June 15: In the strongest response yet to American strong-arm tactics, the Pakistan military on Friday said it would not accept any pressure to abandon the stance taken in negotiations with the United States.

"We will accept no pressure for standing up for our principles," said Gen Khalid Shameem Wynne, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), at a graduation ceremony of National Security and War Course at the National Defence University.

The comments came amid intensifying tensions between Islamabad and Washington. While US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta's ridiculing of Pakistani security forces in India and the remarks on presence of safe havens in tribal areas wasn't helpful, what incensed the military top brass was his backing for restrictions on military aid for Pakistan.

Secretary Panetta had said that "We (US) are reaching the limits of our patience here" for what is said to be Pakistan's tolerance for Haqqani network and other militant groups running insurgency from sanctuaries in tribal areas.

But Gen Wynne categorically denied this allegation in his speech at the defence university. "We are combating wholeheartedly the menace of extremism and terrorism so as to banish them from our society. The people and the armed forces of Pakistan have taken up this challenge and our soldiers as well as innocent civilians are sacrificing their lives for this cause. We seek nothing beyond secure frontiers and pose no threat to any country," the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff committee underscored.

The general used the occasion to remind the Americans that there could be no peace without a resolution of the Kashmir issue.

"I must also point out that as long as regional disputes, especially Kashmir, remain unresolved, stability will remain a distant dream. We must therefore continue for a just solution of the Kashmir dispute as it is only fair to all the people who dwell in this region."

Talks on a new transit agreement for Nato supplies, meanwhile, have been suspended since last week. Both Pakistan and the US have separately said that the negotiations stalled because of bigger issues in relationship and not just because of differences over transit fee.

Diplomatic sources in the United States now blame Pakistan for blocking the Nato supply route deal by raising afresh the apology issue, claiming that all issues had been settled during and after the Chicago summit.

The downward trajectory in bilateral relationship, which started in January last year, when CIA operative Raymond Davis shot dead two young men in Lahore, aggravated with the Osama bin Laden denouement and then the Salala border post attacks in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

The US disregard of demands for an apology over the Salala incident and cessation of drone attacks has made matters worse.

The Americans, on the other side, are frustrated with Pakistan's perceived failure to act against the Haqqani network and other Taliban-affiliated terror groups based in the tribal areas. Conviction of Dr Shakeel Afridi, who helped CIA hunt Osama bin Laden, has added to the fury in Washington. The government's clarification that Dr Afridi had been sentenced to 33 years for collaborating with the outlawed Lashkar-i-Islam failed to pacify US leaders.

In the backdrop of a rift with Pakistan, the US has encouraged India to play a bigger role in Afghanistan and has also launched a trilateral mechanism involving Kabul.

Although the agenda is limited to development, unlike the trilateral process with Islamabad that covers peace and security, the new arrangement is set to anger the Pakistani military, which has been sceptical of Indian involvement in Afghanistan.

Gentlemen, the thought that just occurred to me as the perfect response is Indian snipers. A response that does not really escalate the conflict, but which would make the Pakistanis pay a dear price. I look forward to your comments.
It has been very much prevalent there for a long time but it then converts the line of control into a virtual nightmare when both sides have to occupy posts sometimes as near / close to 50 meters from each other. Movement, logistics and routine becoming a hell for both sides.
The civilians populate and till their land right upto zero lines. Snipers would create a No Man's land of miles astride the LoC. Pakistani soldiers and infiltrating terrorists disguise and dress as civilians. Now, how does one distinguish between a soldier and a civilian ?? That is why Indian Army have to kill the terrorists only when they cross the LoC.

When one is required to hold nearly 750 Km of LoC frontage one side can not be dominating the other all over. Posts on LoC is required to hold nearest ground even if non tactical rather than dominating ground only.
Under such peculiar conditions sniper wars can be very devastating to both the sides, particularly for civilian population.
Moreover, India is in favour of a cold LoC rather than hot LoC so that it could check infiltration more effectively trough anti infiltration grid which is quite in open without consideration for domination or protection from directional fire.
Escalations on LoC is another reasons for Pak to make excuses to the Amirkhans that they need more of their guns, F-16s and greenbacks.
So No snipers there.
Snipping even during wars would be difficult due to Indian Army policy of not harming the civilians deliberately.
Indian Army considers civilians on the other side of LoC as their own but Pakistani Army does not. Snipping leads to Civilian losses.

Indians must heed the General and insist on Pakistan vacating Kashmir as permanent solution . There can not be any other permanent solution.

One does not snipe at 50 - 100 meters and snipping is not only meant to kill.... Soldiers are not there on LoC only to kill any Dog that appears on the other side of LoC.
