The story of India’s Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) programme is akin to any movie. Spanning three decades, the plot involves several emotions, setbacks, and a tragedy in the form of an air crash that significantly altered the course of the narration. And yet, all this leads to a triumphant end. In the case of AEW&C programme, the moment of triumph came recently when the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) began the process of delivering the indigenously developed AEW&C to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

On a cold and gloomy winter afternoon this early January, chairman, DRDO, Dr S. Christopher, the protagonist of this story, spoke about the project in an exclusive interaction with FORCE. “We have succeeded in almost all aspects,” he says. “The final trials started in December 2016. We flew against a large force of 14 aircraft as targets engaged in an actual combat mode. Sometime this year, perhaps during the first quarter the aircraft should get inducted,” he adds. The platforms will be based at Air Force Station, Bhisiana near Bhatinda.

With this accomplishment, India has become the fourth country in the world, after Sweden, Israel and United States to develop an AEW&C system with a fixed Active Electronically Scanner Array (AESA) radar antenna on top instead of the conventional rotating one, claims the DRDO chief. “China is supposed to have done this too, but there is no information about it in the public domain,” says Dr Christopher. The US was the first country to develop the conventional AWACS system followed by Russia.

Following this success, the DRDO is moving on to the next version, AWACS (I), having better capabilities on an Airbus 330 platform. The IAF has given the initial requirement for six aircraft to be followed by two more. “The negotiations for six systems are complete, though we need to go back to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the final sanction after which we will proceed with the programme,” he says.

Airbus will make the basic modifications to fit the radar on top of the aircraft. “A normal Airbus 330 aircraft comes with 60 kilowatts of power whereas for the radar we need higher power. Hence, we are going to fit additional engine in the fuselage which will work only to produce power for the radar. The AWACS (I) would also need a cooling system,” he says, adding that these are the major modifications which call for both time and cost.

Giving the details of the programme, Dr Christopher says, “The top dome is going to be about 14 tonnes and it will not rotate.” Conventionally, the active antenna with electronic scanning has a capability of maximum 120 degrees coverage. Hence, it takes three antennas to cover the 360 degree space which is the same configuration that IAF’s IL-76 based Elta System provides. “However, we will go for four antennas instead of three, with each antenna being able to operate 90 degrees. It will be costlier, but in the long term it is the best.” According to him, despite the initial high price due to the non-recurring engineering costs and certification costs, the overall cost of the indigenous system will be much less.

Indonesia wants Netra Spy Plane Demo in their Country

After expressing Interest in Countries indigenously developed LCA-Tejas Combat jet, things seems to be heating up on another front. According to Indian media report, Indonesia which had expressed in a briefing on Netra AEW&C System has asked DRDO to conduct official product demonstration in its country. Netra AEW&C System already has gathered a lot of attention among few countries after it was demonstrated in Bahrain air show last year. since then DRDO has been following up with many countries who had then inquired about the Netra AEW&C. Netra AEW&C System which is mounted on Brazilian Embraer-145 jets can also be mounted on similar jets of the choice of customers according to DRDO and India is interested in exporting Netra AEW&C System as a package. The government of India already has granted DRDO export clearance for Netra AEW&C System and DRDO with plans to export will be holding on to the third Netra AEW&C Aircraft for Product demonstration, while it handovers Two Netra AEW&C Aircraft to Indian air force.

The Indian Air Force inducted its first indigenously developed airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system, mounted on a Brazilian Embraer-145 jet, on Tuesday ramping up its capability to detect enemy aircraft and missiles.

The Netra AEW&C system has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and has a range of around 200 km.

The aircraft was handed over to the IAF on the opening day of Asia’s largest air show Aero India-2017, more than six years behind schedule. Over 550 defence and aerospace firms, including 279 foreign companies, are taking part in the biennial event being held at the Yelahanka air force base.

“The induction of the AEW&C aircraft is the highlight of the airshow for the air force. We need to swiftly scale up our airborne surveillance capabilities,” a senior IAF officer said.

India inked a $208-million contract for three Brazil-built Embraer-145 planes in 2008 as part of a DRDO programme to scale up the IAF’s AEW&C capabilities. The deal was in the news last year due to kickback allegations.




The IAF currently operates three Israeli Phalcon airborne warning and control system (AWACS) mounted on Russian IL-76 heavy-lift planes and there are plans to buy two more. The system has a range of 400km. The numbers are not enough to cover the eastern and western sectors during offensive operations.

In 2015, the defence ministry accorded its acceptance of necessity, the first step towards making an acquisition, for a $760-million project involving mounting two such indigenously developed surveillance systems on the European Airbus A330 platform.

India is considering a proposal to buy a total of six A330 aircraft on which the AWACS may be mounted, taking the value of the deal to around $2.5 billion. The first such aircraft could be inducted by 2025.

The radar system to detect far-off targets will be developed by the DRDO. Airbus Defence & Space was the only bidder for the AWACS India programme, making it the first single vendor project to be cleared by the NDA government.

The AWACS is a robust monitoring system that provides 360-degree coverage, compared to AEW&C’s 240-degree capability. The AWACS also has better range and endurance.

As Indian Air Force has taken delivery of its first indigenous "eye in the sky" Netra — Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEWCS) — its developer says an advanced version with a 360-degree sweep — against the present 240 degrees — is on the cards.
"The next system will be upgraded, with more range and 360 degree coverage," Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Chairman S Christopher told IANS on the sidelines of the Aero India 2017 military exposition, adding that India will be only the second country in the world after Israel to develop an AEWCS with a 360 degree sweep.
The present system, mounted on a Brazilian Embraer-145 jet, can only scan the area on both sides of the aircraft but not those in front or at the back. This achievement made India only the fourth country to develop its own AEWCS.
"The present system scans on both sides; it has around 240 degrees coverage. But that does not mean it is lacking in any way. All over the world, countries have electronic scanners with limited coverage, except Israel," Christopher said.
"We can fight a war with the AEWCS with 240 degrees coverage. If it is moving along the border it can scan both sides. It is only at sea that 360 degrees scanning is required," he said.
The DRDO chief said that the next version will be ready within 84 months.
The AEWCS will supplement the larger and more capable EL/W-2090 Phalcom AWACS the IAF has acquired from Israel.
Two more Embraers are being equipped with AEWC systems. One will be handed over to the IAF by June. The DRDO will initially keep the other one for making further improvements, and it will eventually be handed over to the IAF.

The Phalcons do pack quite a punch, with 360-degree coverage over a 400km range. But while the long-pending $1 billion deal for two more Phalcons is yet to be inked, audit watchdog CAG has blasted the "sub-optimal utilisation" of the three existing ones due to poor planning and serviceability.

We must improve....

It has been inked..
we have already signed deal to include 2 more Phalcon..issue is not with radar but with IL76/78 platform. that's the reason for delay in induction..
