First thing is, for an upper middle class person, there is no need for a maid. It takes 10 minutes to sweep a broom on a marble floor like Dhoni's helicopter shot and 10 minutes to wash utensils if everyone is asked to wash his own plate after lunch.

I don't know where Indians have learnt this dirty 'luxury' of keeping maids from. Even the British and Americans don't have such luxuries. One should only hire a helper if they are bed ridden or paralyzed.

Utensils - there is a simple solution - dishwasher. However, do we have 24 hour water in India?

Anyway of course one can do everything ourselves. However, what is the point in life if it is to merely exist while getting up early, dealing with a long commute, doing housework and then collapsing in bed in exhaustion. That is one of the joys of Indian life vs living in the West.

ps. Even here in America, it is getting common to hire a maid (usually a Mexican lady) who comes once a week, vacuums, does laundry, makes your bed, dusts.. Usually for $70 in my area for a small apartment.

Na it is useful but you have to scrape the food off the plate. We use it everyday. Can't put food with morsels clinging to it in the washer. Nothing like a plate cleaned, sanitized, dried and warmed by a dishwasher Of course, it doesn't clean things like a pressure cooker after cooking alu gobhi in it

Now you know a truly useless invention (if you have sunny weather)? A clothes drier. So much waste of electricity. Just hang the frickin clothes on a line in the sun.

It is their money, they can spend it as they want, I was only making a general statement. Money/currency is a reward which society gives for the value a person adds to society. When you hire Washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, Roomba bot, you are rewarding people who transport these gadgets, salesmen, shop owners, repairmen, engineers, marketers etc. When you hire a maid based on 'man hours', you are plucking the lowest hanging fruit but shortchanging others who have taken more pains to add more value to society.

Thinking that you are providing employment to 100 people, but in reality, buying the machine gives employment to more people (everyone from the person who designed it to the one who painted it). It stimulates the economy and the benefits trickle down to you in the form of growth of your investments.

When you are rewarding manual laborers, the guy goes home, has 10 kids, and continues being poor and uneducated. It's an burden on the economy and you are creating more voters to compete against your vote. It impacts more than just the service economy, it impacts immigration patterns, voting patterns, public policy etc.

~20%% of US population is Latino for the same reason. 1/3 of Bangladeshi population has moved to India for the same reason. We have been rewarding that behavior. Buy home appliances, the money will go to the son of some lower middle class Indian who has taken the trouble to skill himself at least as a technician or a salesman.

Cooking the food yourself and then getting a maid to clean the dishes is still semi-luxury. One can avoid a whole lot of trouble from buying vegetables, cleaning, cutting, cooking, washing utensils, by simply hiring a nearby hotel to deliver food.

Afternoon lunch happens in office anyway. Only dinner remains. One can do that on the way to the home in a hotel of their choice. Roz roz hotel ka khana, wah wah.

NRIs as a group are the highest educated, highest paid group mostly working in the tech industry, living in a bubble, but the ordinary American cannot see these people since the typical American does not have a college degree and does not work in tech. Only 30% of Americans have college degrees and even lesser have advanced degrees. These red necks will need to get a degree in order to break into the social circle of a typical NRI group. 80% Indians in the US have an advanced degree, as opposed to 30% national average. The average income of NRIs is 25% higher than the national average. They have no business judging us, we are doing better than them. The judgement comes from ignorant Americans having run ins with Pakistani and Bangladeshi shopkeepers and mechanics. On top of that, these Pakistanis and Bangladeshis claim to be Indians whenever anyone asks them. They ruin our brand value.

An NRI from San Fransisco cannot go on a door-to-door campaign in Detroit to correct the perception of the daily wage ******s. He eats his Veg Thali, chants Modi Modi once in a year when Modi visits and then goes back to his ivory tower and the ******s go back to stealing food from 7/11 stores when they run out of food stamps.

and if you are comparing two different communities then you not gonna find much difference unless they are from different part of the world ,
