Anti-nuke activists continue fast, police maintain strict vigil

The Hindu : States / Tamil Nadu : Anti-nuke activists continue fast, police maintain strict vigil

Police and paramilitary personnel maintained strict vigil as tension prevailed at Idinthakarai, the epicentre of the stir against Kudankulam nuclear power plant, with anti-nuclear agitators continuing their indefinite fast on Wednesday protesting the state Cabinet's decision to go ahead with the project.

Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strength in areas around Kudankulam as security has been stepped up after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced the Cabinet's decision to go ahead with the project on Monday.

Criticising the police action, including arrest of ten activists, S.P. Udayakumar, convener of the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy, spearheading the stir and observing the fast, said they were all prepared to be arrested.

"If police want to arrest us, let them arrest all of us here. All of us here are overstepping the law, so let them arrest all of us. It is not appropriate to arrest one or two of us. We are all prepared to be arrested," he told reporters.

Officials denied reports that supply of milk and vegetables to some villages in the area had been stopped.

Media personnel were stopped from venturing into Idinthakarai earlier in the day, but were later allowed.

Work at the Kudankulam nuclear plant was at a standstill following eight month-long protests by locals spearheaded by PMANE.

After the state Cabinet gave its nod on Monday, work at the Indo-Russian nuclear project started in full swing with officials expressing hope that the first unit would be commissioned "as soon as possible".

Prohibitory orders imposed in the area since Monday are still in force and over 32 battalions of Tamil Nadu Special Police, four companies of Rapid Action Force of the Central Industrial Security Force deployed.

Let these protesters spend some time in jail without electricity & food, they will understand. Also passport should be seized from all protesters( from likes of Udaykumar)

Everyone wants to become Anna Hazare now-a-days. These protesters forgot that the impact of their protest is local, and nobody in this country, and their state cares about them.

This is the responsibility of the government to not let such situation arise again, local sensitivities must be taken care of before starting such projects.

This is the point we were telling from long time, that JJ is supporting this nonsense directly or indirectly.
That guy (sissy) is hiding behind women inside a church and is blabbering in fear ...good luck believing him.

Kudankulam nuclear power plant will start soon, time to make nuclear regulation transparent

Kudankulam nuclear power plant will start soon, time to make nuclear regulation transparent - The Economic Times

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has done the opposite of what her Bengal counterpart did. Unlike Banerjee, who threw out plans to set up a nuclear power plant as soon as she came to power, Jayalalithaa will start up the first new nuclear project in India in a long time.

The $3-billion project, plans for which were first drawn up between Rajiv Gandhi and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1988, will be the first new nuclear plant to become operational since the 2008 nuclear deal was signed between India and the US.

At Kudankulam, two reactors will generate 1,000 mw each, making this the largest single nuclear power site in India. According to plan, two more reactors can go up on the site - and we believe that they should - but governments need to do a few things before that. The state government should lift the heavilyarmed police cordon it has thrown around protestors at the site and make way for a peaceful, negotiated climbdown.

After Fukushima, people's fears about nuclear power cannot be dismissed out of hand; the plant's safety features have to be explained to people. That will bring down resistance, along with increased power supply. The Centre too has to do its bit. People distrust India's nuclear programme because they don't know anything about it.

That secrecy made sense during the Cold War era, when India decided to go nuclear against the wishes of the west. It makes no sense today, after we have been accepted into the nuclear mainstream. The government has to take safety seriously.

Today, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), carved out of the department of atomic energy in 1983, continues to report to the shadowy Atomic Energy Commission, which reports to the Prime Minister. The regulator answers to those it is supposed to watch over.

This has to change: the AERB must become a statutory authority, like market regulator Sebi or telecom watchdog Trai, conduct frequent safety checks and disseminate its findings openly. Trai, for example, initiates policy directives through discussion papers on the Web, where it also disseminates regulatory findings and diktats. AERB should do the same.

Well the fact can not be denied
We, the people on the ground, know facts better than you.....ground knowledge is always better than reading news from Times now and hindustan times.

JJ should be removed and govt disbanded. Country is losing thousands of crores on whims of JJ and petty tamil politics.
You just exceeded yourself..congrats...

BTW she is 1000X better than Bhaiya ji who is unleashing his gunda raj there....atleast here both police and protestors maintain law and order.

Still the attempts to shut up others based on narrow regionalism, pathetic, fact is fact you are running from it, but you can not change the reality

I think she has been very cautious in handling the agitation and not letting it get more support. The average Tamilian has now realised with the power cuts that the power station that is on verge of completion is very important to go online asap. She has also bargained for more power from KKNP for Tamil Nadu. With her not cracking down on the protesters sooner she has forced the central govt to take action against them. Central govt agencies have cracked down on all NGOs that are recieving foreign funds. Why should she have had to bear the political cost alone by cracking down on what might have been genuine fears of the locals [another matter that `foreign hand` was in play]? So, win-win situation for JJ. JJ is no fire brand Mamata - she is intelligent and subtle. Just my opinion.
