A dedicated CAS fighter like A10 even under AF command will make sure CAS will be well executed. The reason being A10 being a CAS fighter will have no other use. A dedicated pilot force which is well linked with Army command will be able to take care of CAS.

What's the comparison of the heat signature. If the piston planes don't emit too much heat or the one required by heat seeking missiles then how will they home in?

What's the difference in the heat signature of piston powered propeller planes and today's jets? I would imagine it would be far less than jet engines which then means it could be a good CAS option as it negates MANPADS. WWII planes took a lot of damage and still returned home.

This issue has been discussed over and over. I remember starting a thread "should the army have it's own CAS aircrafts" about 2 years back.

If there was whiff of india thinking of dedicated CAS, you would see the US outside MoD waiting to present the A-10. And it could come by FMS. Would be in indian forces in no time.

Every system has its own importance. The US is not totally dependent on UCAVs for CAS. UCAVs are still restricted by the payload capacity and also intelligence of a pilot who has more situational awareness. Let me think of an example. What would you prefer in a Longewala type of...

Tomcat, we can have a separate division of air assets on the lines of the mechanized division. With the services getting wired, calling in for CAS would be very easy.

Well if we go for aviation wing, then done kind of operational structure will ge formed. But don't know if we can have of the kind you are saying as thst would then require very vast assets for different battalions. Maybe at the division level. I think our military pros can better answer that...

Didn't quite get your question. Are you asking if we already had an air wing already then what?

Not necessary. Look at the US system. All there service wings have air assets. The army has substantial air assets. It frees the AF to take care of strategic issues rather than tactical. It also takes care of the lack of sync between the two branches. Also makes sense with the new cold start...

Come on mate. A 10 is a good system and not very expensive. Combat proven in desert conditions which suits India fine. I am a big fan of it and don't see why we cannot afford it. Along with the new RFP fir attack helos for the Army, it would be a great asset for the army.

I think a CAS fighter requires to be a twin engine, and be able to take a lot of punishment as it will face a lot of small gun fire, AAA etc. The IJT is a single engine aircraft, and not big enough to carry a lot of the ammo required and also take the punishment in a CAS role. Just a little...

Guys we are limiting ourselves to the A-10. It may be the best around, but then India can look at other options as well. The point of discussion is having dedicated CAS aircraft for the Indian Army, operated by the Army. The only thing that can be made common between the AF and IA is the use...

Mate if we can afford an Apache we can afford a fixed winger like A-10, not necessarily that one, though it's the best going around

UCAVs are more suited for the hunter killed role or when there is a specific intel on high value target. It's not suitable fir CAS. It cannot carry the weapons load of say an A-10 or an Apache. Besides CAS is also requires situational awareness which is better with a piloted aircraft rather than...

The motive to get the Army to have its own CAS a/cs is because of lack of synergy between the AF and the Army. The AF has to divert its assets to the Army and stop it from conducting its own operations. Also the AF might not have assets in place when required by the Army and lives and time maybe...

I am not advocating the A-10. If any other ac is suitable for India so be it. I'm only trying to tell that a fixed wing a/c is required in addition to choppers. Indegenous or imported, logistics, training and pilots will be required all the same.

Yes I am aware that the RFP for 22 helos has been cancelled. For all practical purpose to let the Apache get in as it did not participate the first time. Boeing has already come out to offer the Apache and will participate in the next tender that will come up shortly. I think it will be...
