US drops largest non-nuclear bomb on Afghanistan, first time used in combat

The US military has used its GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB), nicknamed “the mother of all bombs,” for the first time in combat. The US Air Force used it in Afghanistan to target Islamic State tunnels and personnel.
The 21,000-pound (9,525 kg) bomb was dropped in the Achin district of the Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan.

The Pentagon has confirmed the use of the MOAB, and is currently assessing damage. General John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, signed off on its use, CNN reported. Authority was also sought from General Joseph Votel, commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM).

“The strike was designed to minimize the risk to Afghan and U.S. Forces conducting clearing operations in the area while maximizing the destruction of ISIS-K fighters and facilities,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement, referring to Islamic State Khorasan, the branch of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

Nicholson described the MOAB as “the right munition to reduce” the improvised explosive devices (IEDs), bunkers and tunnels IS is using to “thicken their defense.” The bomb will also “maintain the momentum of our offensive against ISIS-K,” he said.

The Air Force “took every precaution to avoid civilian casualties,” CENTCOM said.

WASINGTON: The United States dropped a massive GBU-43 bomb, the largest non-nuclear bomb it has ever used in combat, in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday against a series of caves used by Islamic State (IS) militants, the military said.

It was the first time the US has used this size of bomb in a conflict. It was dropped from a MC-130 aircraft in the Achin district of Nangarhar province, close to the border with Pakistan, Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said.

Also known as the “mother of all bombs,” the GBU-43 is a 9,797kg GPS-guided munition and was first tested in March 2003, just days before the start of the Iraq war.

General John Nicholson, the head of US and international forces in Afghanistan, said the bomb was used against caves and bunkers housing fighters of the Islamic State, also known as Da’ish, in Afghanistan.

“This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against IS,” Nicholson said in a statement.

Here's how much the 'mother of all bombs' the US just dropped on Afghanistan actually cost

Some of President Donald Trump's critics were quick to decry the cost of dropping the "mother of all bombs" on an Islamic State target in Afghanistan on Thursday.

But the number heavily cited across social media, $314 million , was how much the US military paid for 20 such bombs, technically called the Massive Ordnance Air Blast.

The US Air Force dropped one MOAB - the largest nonnuclear bomb in the US's arsenal - on an ISIS target in a remote part of far northeast Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon . White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the goal was to destroy "a system of tunnels and caves that ISIS fighters used to move around freely, making it easier for them to target US military advisers and Afghan forces in the area."

One MOAB costs about $16 million, according to military equipment siteDeagel.com . The Los Angeles Times reported that the US military developed and ordered 20 MOABs in 2011, for a total cost of $314 million.

But many celebrities and other Trump critics took to Twitter to express their frustration at the president for authorizing such an expensive bomb, citing the total figure instead:

For comparison, the USS Harry Truman dropped 1,118 smaller bombs on Iraq and Syria as part of the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve in 2016. A general purpose 1,000-pound MK-83 costs about $12,000 .

I'm sure the MOAB obliterated it's target. It should send a message to NK, Syria and Russia that president Trump is not playing games.
Last I checked Daisy Cutters used during invasion of Afghanistan were pretty ineffective against the cave complexes.

As for President Trump, you might wanna inform him that the airfield he destroyed were back in action in less than 72 hours.

Scores of ISI officials dead in US bombing at Afghanistan

The MOAB wonder!

At least 500 Pakistani nationals have been killed in the US bombing that took place at Nangarhar province in Afghanistan. The area that was targeted was controlled by the Islamic State and protected by the Pakistan army, sources say.

The operation that was jointly coordinated by the 201 Selab Corps of the Afghanistan army targeted the caves and tunnels that were used as hiding places by the IS. It is now clear that the Pakistan army was backing these IS operatives in Afghanistan, official sources also confirmed.

Indian agencies who are coordinating with their counterparts in Afghanistan have learnt that there are no civilians living in the area.

There were a large number of stooges of the ISI who have been protecting the ISIS operatives in this area. The US action comes at a time when there was a huge build up of ISIS forces in Afghanistan.

Indian agencies say that the Pakistan army and ISI were nurturing these operatives. The entire area that was bombed was under the control of the ISI officials backing the ISIS, sources also said.

The impact of the bomb was so huge that it blew up at least 500 Pakistanis and an equal number of ISIS operatives.
