It's now less than Canada even. It topped out at 52 million in 1991 when Cold War just ended.

Ukraine and western Russia are large, fertile and flat countries perfectly suited for large populations, industry and massive food production. But alas, Slavic birth rates are pathetic, because whenever times are bad they just stop having kids. The irony is, the less kids they have, the worse their situation will get, leading to even fewer kids. It's a civilizational death spiral. The the worst part is the Muslim minorities in Russia are still reproducing in high numbers, while its Slavs are decreasing, which will cause an even worse demographic crisis. That's why over the past 10 years Putin has been simping hard for Muslims, showing off Europe's biggest mosque, and handing over lots of power to Ramzan Kadyrov ergo the Chechens. They already depend on central Asian labour and it will only increase.

Russia if it had normal birth rates should have had 200-240 million people, and Ukraine should have had 70-80. And they should have had strong manufacturing sectors to take advantage of their land, resources and labour. The Slavic world is the biggest lost opportunity of this century and the last.
